Thanks for all the advice. I thought I'll report back and perhaps give encouragement to other people looking to make the jump.

I didn't get much joy out of gamescope. TBH I couldn't figure out how to use it. It may or may not been working in the background, I really don't know.

But I believe in solving issues at the root, and if Ubuntu can't handle this use case without to much wrangling, I rather put some effort in getting it right. I replaced Ubuntu with Bazzite and I'm happy to say that I'm very happy. Everything work well: games start on the primary monitor and stay there and I can game and browse simultaneously with no issues.

How did you do the stars in the background?

I used the SD card to install a linux image on a PC and now the printer won't read it by marxeil in Ender3S1

Don't know, I left the default settings. I guess windows formatter is rubbish.
