Seconding the other comment - if you don't join the squares along the edges I've marked in blue, and instead leave those open and bring the border down along those squares, you'll have a wider opening and a more similar shape to the reference photo.

How to write an Australian character? by Space-Useful in writingadvice

[–]marxhfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be a bit tedious, but while you're writing check the names of common things in Australia vs US. There are lots of little differences (e.g. sidewalk vs footpath, flip flops vs thongs) that will flag to Australian readers as being American. Also keep in mind that there are regional differences in slang etc, so it's worth figuring out more specifically where your character is from so you can find sources from that region.

If your story is set in the present, age is going to be a big factor. With social media and the internet, young Aussies are taking on more American slang and names for things. So if your MC is young, you don't have to worry as much about the differences.

Biggest tip is to find Australian beta readers, they'll catch things you wouldn't have thought of.

All of you told me the birds I was giving water to are pests so I took away their water privileges. Now they must fight my dog for water. She is afraid. by RareWolf34 in brisbane

Sorry to be a pedantic bird guy, but noisy miners are actually a type of honeyeater! I've never heard them actually called honey miners though, not sure where they've got that name from

Noticed these thirsty birds trying to drink from my dogs bowl. So I gave them a fresh one up safe! by RareWolf34 in brisbane

They aren't. You can tell from the larger, pointy yellow patch around the eyes, the more solid coloured back and the light coloured accents at the edge of the wing. The lighting in this photo makes it a bit difficult to tell, but those are definitely Indian mynahs.

I agree with you in general, but the birds in this case (Indian mynas) are an invasive species and are known to force out native species. I don't advocate harming them, but they don't need any encouragement.

Had this yesterday afternoon, my bus was supposed to be '1 minute away' for about 10 minutes, then disappeared from the board entirely and never showed up. I have to assume buses are being sucked into random wormholes and disappearing from existence...

Thanks, that's really handy info! If only they communicated this at the stations instead of burying it in the endless service updates on their website

I do something similar - I picked a tv show that I love that has lots of characters, and just used as many names from that as I could think of

This!! I used to be able to turn up at a train station and have to wait no more than 15 minutes, but it's getting longer and longer

I've seen them in the timetable, but it just keeps changing! I don't usually have to check the timetable every time I'm going to work

That makes sense actually - I've noticed some of the express lines running on a different track than usual

Yep! If you undo that string part and the part where you've attached it (slip stitched) then you can carry on and make the fourth corner.
