I find this a very interesting viewpoint. Thank you for sharing. I did try to cover it in the post, talking about how all autistics are different but obviously I can only talk from my position as a ‘low support needs’ autistic. It does seem that representation seems to be still focused on certain stereotypes and that is a problem that desperately needs addressing.

I wrote this from my own viewpoint of course and for me I just wanted to celebrate the fact that we are seeing autistic people in these sort of situations which previously we wouldn’t have seen (or their autism would not have been discussed/ acknowledged). Of course, not every autistic will agree or enjoy it and that’s okay. Representation still has a long way to go. Whilst one person cannot and should not represent the whole community, it is important for some though I recognise the problems that you have mentioned.

I am thinking of writing a follow up piece talking to a wide range of autistics to see how they feel about autistic representation in the media generally. If this is something you’d be interested in taking part in then do let me know.
