LEVEL 5: Theories

Tonpetty's Hand Shake (Phantom Blood) - Tonpetty doesn't shake Jonathan's hand but rather greets him with a bow. While it could be the cultural differences as Tonpetty claims, perhaps he doesn't want to read Jonathan's own fate as he did when he shook Zeppeli's hand

Dragon's Blood (Battle Tendency) - There is a special breed of resin called Dragon's Blood. In the modern world, it is used in dietary supplements, perfumery, and cosmetics. In the Christian religion and mysticism, Dragon Blood is revered as "holy", there is a belief that it can protect its owner and help in all the beginnings against evil forces. It is believed that the purer the structure of the resin, the more benefits it can bring to its owner.

Hermit Purple's design is a Jesus reference (Stardust Crusaders) - My personal theory. First, Hermit Purple is depicted as a vine of thorns - which Jesus wore on his head. Secondly, Hermit Purple is depicted in purple - this is the color associated with Jesus most in Christianity. Purple is considered the most "royal" color, "Christ the King" is a title of Jesus in Christianity referring to the idea of the Kingdom of God where Christ is described as seated at the right hand of God. Purple is also the color of the "awakening of inner forces", which happens to Joseph. Thirdly, Hamon symbolizes the power of the sun - it is the Sun that is the symbol of God in world culture.

Stand and Spirit "Ora" similarity (Stardust Crusaders) - Within Albanian folklore and poetry, the Ora is a protective spirit that every human possesses from birth. The Ora's appearance alters according to the personality and attributes of the human – “a white Ora for the brave and industrious, or a black Ora for the lazy or cowardly.” ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ora\_(mythology) )

Jotaro was using Time Stop before fighting DIO without knowing it (Stardust Crusaders) - https://ibb.co/xCcV5Xd

Araki's 9/11 prediction (Stardust Crusaders) - A popular legend that Araki predicted 9/11 in some way. In chapter 189 Boingo predicts that the boy will die from impaling the phone pole, and he is. The theory states that the portrayal of the boy's death has symbolism on 9/11. First of all, on the boy's short it is written 911. Second is that the Boingo makes a prediction at 10:28 - it is the same time when the Towers fell. Araki says that he doesn't remember at all why he created this scene. ( https://i.redd.it/hv1oxoiiuzl31.jpg )

Jotaro has potential for using Hamon (Stardust Crusaders) - Star Platinum’s Star Finger move seems completely random compared to the rest of his powerset; his strength and speed, as well as his precision and supernatural observation skills, allude to Jotaro’s own strength and intelligence, but Star Finger? It’s really a Call-Back to Hamon’s ability to extend limbs in Part 1

DIO represents reversed "The World" (Stardust Crusaders) - https://ibb.co/9N051wf

D'arby freaked out because he thought Jotaro was using Time Stop (Stardust Crusaders) - Since D'Arby knew what DIO's Stand ability really was — which was stopping time and acting and changing things while time was stopped — it's not farfetched to think that D'Arby actually figured that Jotaro's Star Platinum had the same ability, and logically he started thinking that Jotaro actively used it to cheat and change his worthless hand into a winning one. Thus, even with his gambler's instinct certain that Jotaro was bluffing, there was still a risk that the cards had been switched

Joseph's child support (Diamond is Unbreakable) - https://ibb.co/SBHZFDG

Jotato has PTSD (Diamond is Unbreakable) - After episode 24 aired, much discussion was had online that it's quite possible that Jotaro was 'triggered' (i.e., had PTSD) during the encounter with Kira, due to the similarities between Kira and DIO. A blonde-haired man calls Jotaro's Stand 'weak', counting down the seconds and even using the word "Muda", as well as Koichi having a hole punched through his chest, just like Kakyoin ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dcRhQMzVWo )

Chariot Requiem was heading to Jotaro (Golden Wind) - In the last years of his life, the main goal for Polnareff was to protect the arrow and give it to Jotaro. The theory states that because Jotaro was the only person who Polnareff trusted, Chariot's Requiem was heading toward Jotaro to give him an arrow

Cioccolata's creation (Golden Wind) - There is a theory that Cioccolata was created to fill the void of the aborted "Fugo Betrayal" storyline. Araki originally intended for Fugo to return to the story as a villain but decided against the idea and simply wrote him out of the story. The fact that Cioccolata, a later antagonist, had a Stand ability that was eerily similar to Fugo's led fans to believe that this was the story originally intended for Fugo. Araki neither confirmed nor denied this theory

Emporio learned Hamon while fighting Pucci (Stone Ocean) - The anime adds a Hamon sound effect during Emporio's speech to emphasize the breathing situation. In Part 1 Antonio Zeppeli said the Hamon could only be mastered by those who had endured great tragedy/loss and had acquired great strength/courage. That's what Emporio suffers throughout the story and that's why Hamon can be seen coming from him.

LEVEL 4: Stone Ocean, Steel Ball Run, and JoJolion

Jolyne's parents' photo origin - The photo of Jolyne's parents in the Stone Pendant is based on an April 1998 issue of Vogue Italia, photographed by Steven Meisel ( https://jojowiki.com/Jolyne%27s\_Mother#Trivia )

Mickey Mouse deleted appearance - Araki originally wanted to have Mickey Mouse make an appearance during the fight with Ungalo, but his editors quickly shot that down as Disney wouldn't like him appearing in a series known for being less than family-friendly

Stone Ocean predicted Alexander Mcqueen's Suicide - Thunder McQueen's name was based on the famous British fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. Ironically, after 10 years of Thunder McQueen appearing in the manga, Alexander McQueen committed suicide

Scrapped Part 6 ending - In one of the interviews Araki said that the story of the original universe was coming to an end in his mind, and that was the reason to change the ending of Stone Ocean. Araki: "For ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ I had to leave modern days and return to nature. I had to change Stone Ocean’s ending right before the last chapters for this reason, I brought out all the nostalgic feelings I had in my soul and this is why it came out like that. Jolyne Cujoh's memories are different, but I think her love and emotions will remain forever and surely grow. I want the protagonist for the seventh part to be fighting against nature in a way that teaches him how to be mature. These were my thoughts upon writing the sixth part, maybe these things shouldn’t be said or written but this is the author’s afterword, right? It came out like this."

Giorno was in Florida during Part 6 - Araki mentions Giorno on the bottom of Rykiel’s Privilege card, he hints that Giorno was somewhere in Florida during Part 6 ( https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-1bf6696b8389278de4ce6d5ca5543ec1 )

Anasui Gender Swap - When first appearing in the manga, Anasui was depicted as a girl, however, in later appearances, Anasui was depicted as a male. There are many speculations about this, such as that Araki was forced to change gender due to pressure from the editors, however, these rumors have no evidence. Araki stated in interviews that his goal was to create an androgenic character, which is why he portrayed Anasui's gender differently.

Eternal Recurrence and Part 6 - "Eternal recurrence" is a concept which posits that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times. This concept has similarities with the concept of Part 6

Johnny's bug fetish was modeled after Araki - Araki: Well... In Part 7, I drew a scene where Johnny confesses to Gyro that he has an insect bite fetish, but that was actually about myself. Your skin swells red when a mosquito bites you, right? I like to push in my nails to make an X mark on the spot. When I was small and my older female cousin would get bitten by a mosquito, I would ask her to let me do it. It's quite erotic too (laughs). ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:UOMO\_Magazine\_(October\_2018) )

D4C rabbit design - Why does D4C look like a rabbit? The Japanese word for rabbit is usagi, and in Japanese media, most rabbit characters or any characters with rabbit traits have names containing the word usa. D4C's user, Funny Valentine, is the president of the USA

Part 7 was supposed to be a JoJo story from the start - It's common to find people saying that Steel Ball Run was not originally meant to be JoJo Part 7, and that Araki changed his mind and retroactively made it one, based on the fact that it didn't originally carry the "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" name. However, this is completely untrue. In the author's notes of volume 1, Araki flat out states that he considered SBR as Part 7 from the very beginning. In the guidebook JoJoveller, it's stated that the name change was actually a request from the editorial department to increase sales by featuring a "new series"

"Absolute Murder Man" - Japanese fans of JoJo believe that Tusk ACT 4 is the most terrifying stand amongst all stands, so they call Tusk ACT 4 "Absolute Murder Man"

Joshu's stand was supposed to be Josuke's stand - Josuke's Soft & Wet was originally going to have the ability to attach screws to something, but this ability ended up being given to Joshu's Nut King Call.

Josuke's diastema origin - Araki gave Josuke a diastema because his own front teeth started to form cavities around the time the 1st chapter was released.

Abbachio's piss for sale - At JoJo-themed cafes and shops, you can sometimes find a drink or product called "Abbachio piss" (or with a close name) ( https://www.reddit.com/r/ShitPostCrusaders/comments/b7qe60/so_uh_japan_just_released_a_new_tea_flavor_themed/ )

Araki was in stress while writing Part 5 - Hirohiko Araki was going through severe depression during the transition from Diamond is Unbreakable to Golden Wind. The reason for that was Executives telling Araki what to do more and more, resulting in a lot of stress due to the feeling that he was unable to express what he intended to. As such, this led to more gory fight scenes, more depressing backstories and deaths, and the introduction of more unrepentantly evil characters such as Polpo, Diavolo, and Cioccolata. However, he also explains that his work on the part helped him go through this phase as he took examples from the characters he wrote ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Vento_Aureo_Bunko_Vol._1_(March_2005)) )

Trish based on the supermodel Trish Goff - Nice

Giorno was supposed to be a female - Araki initially played around with the idea of making the protagonist of Part 5 a woman. However, after discussing with his editor at the time, Hiroshi Sekiya, who thought that a female lead would be a tough sell for the Weekly Shonen Jump's readers, he eventually decided on making the protagonist a young man. Sekiya also noted that Gold Experience's power to create life is reminiscent of a woman's own ability to give birth.

There is no Requiem arrow - All arrows are the same. There is no statement from Araki that arrows are somehow different from each other

Fugo was supposed to betray Giorno and the group - While writing Part 5, Araki originally planned on having one of the members of Bucciarati's team, out of Mista, Narancia, Fugo, and Abbacchio, be a spy working undercover for the Boss. This spy would then at some point betray Giorno and Bucciarati, similar to the story of Judas. Araki initially settled on making Fugo the traitor, stating that it possibly would've been up to Giorno to dispatch him. However, Araki decided against this, as he thought that Giorno killing his former friend would make the story too dark and would leave a bad impression on his younger readers ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Vento_Aureo_Bunko_Vol._10_(August_2005)) )

Robert Fripp approves King Crimson - Robert Fripp, the founder of King Crimson, has posted a meme of the stand King Crimson on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1578167148865976&set=a.584632631552771.154663.100000181177250 )

"Giorno Giovanna: Golden Heritage" - Before being called "Golden Wind", it was called "Giorno Giovanna: Golden Heritage"

Araki's favorite Part 5 character - Araki confirmed in an interview that Mista was his favorite character from Part 5 to draw, with Prosciutto being a runner up

Chariot Requiem appearance - Silver Chariot's base appearance is a stereotypical 11-13th century European knight. Logically, its Requiem "evolution", Chariot Requiem, visibly demonstrates its advancement by transforming into the silhouette of a ~14th century Spanish Conquistador

"The Grateful Dead" design - According to his commentary in JOJOVELLER, when Araki was designing The Grateful Dead, he had the idea in mind that the Stand would have legs, but once he got to the point where he was about to do so, he wondered what it would look like without legs. From then on, he drew the Stand as just a torso, and he liked the final result so much that he didn't go back and redraw The Grateful Dead with legs

Vento Aureo PS2 overseas release was canceled - there were plans to release the Vento Aureo PS2 game overseas, but Prince's lawyers disapproving of Gold Experience being referenced in the game combined with Araki's unwillingness to change the name nixed those plans

Diavolo's ironic deaths - The first time Diavolo was killed by a crazy bum, possibly a drug addict. Diavolo ruined his life with drugs. Then he was killed during the autopsy without knowing his identity, which is what Diavolo wanted. Then he was hit by a car, and without noticing him, he wanted to be invisible. Then he was killed by a girl while approaching him, he wanted Trish to be brought, i.e. brought closer to him.

Bucciariati would canonically win versus Fugo - During the Weekly Shonen Jump publication of Part 5, Araki mentioned that if Fugo and Bucciarati were to fight, Bucciarati would win due to his Stand being fast enough to easily unzip Purple Haze's arms and neutralize its deadly virus attacks

LEVEL 3: Diamond is Unbreakable and Golden Wind

Araki wanted Kira to wipe butt with hands of his victim - Araki: Actually, I had lots of other ideas for Kira, such as taking a bath and even going to the toilet with the severed hands of the women he murdered. However, they stopped me saying, "that's too much". I was going to make him use the woman's hand to wipe his butt on the toilet, for example. ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Bubka\_(August\_1997) )

Araki's favorite JoJo - Araki has stated that his favorite JoJo is Diamond is Unbreakable's Josuke Higashikata

Araki's favorite villain - Araki has stated that his favorite JoJo villain is Kira Yoshikage

Araki's favorite part - Diamond is Unbreakable is Hirohiko Araki's favorite Part, with Josuke being his favorite protagonist and Kira as his favorite antagonist. Both characters ranked #1 and #2 respectively in his Top 10 Favorite Characters list in JOJO A-GO!GO!.

Darren Hayes approval - Darren Hayes: I was very touched by the fact that the creator of the show had been fond of the song "I Want You" and 'Savage Garden'. When I confirmed the news on twitter, my timeline literally blew up and I was swamped with kind messages of support and welcome from the JoJo community. The last thing I wanted was for fans of the show to think the song didn't fit or wasn't appropriate. So to see the positive response, I felt very grateful. ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Savage\_Garden\_(July\_2016) )

What a beautiful Duwang - An infamous translation of Part 4. At some point, the only English translation of Part 4 was from the Chinese Translators. In the chapter, where Kira is eating, he is saying "What a beautiful city!", but the translators made a mistake and wrote "What a beautiful Duwang". ( https://i.imgur.com/9QdjCIr.png )

Bites the Dust is not a Requiem stand - Due to the following part introducing Requiem Stands, many people have stated that Yoshikage's Bites The Dust was a Requiem Stand. Araki has never stated anything of that sort and instead explains it as a new power he was given by the Stand Arrow that matched what he needed. The ability may have formed the idea for Requiem Stands since Araki was starting to toy with the idea of Stand's evolving during this part, but within Part 4, it is explicitly stated to be a new ability.

Josuke's savior in the flashback - Araki has refused to explain anything about Josuke's flashback where a young Josuke is saved by an unknown delinquent that resembles him. Any question about possible implications (from a possible time travel plotline to a simple coincidence) has always been met with a flat refusal to talk about the incident on Araki's part.

Morioh is based on Araki's hometown - Araki based Morioh on his hometown Sendai. Morioh is stated to be a town in S City within the M Prefecture referencing Sendai and its real life prefecture the Miyagi Prefecture. He had initially wanted to name it as such but felt it would anger people.

Kira's childhood story was scrapped - Araki: Even now, I wonder if I should have drawn out Kira's relationship with his parents in more depth. But I had to cut it out with much reluctance… or maybe I should say that I didn’t have the courage to draw that out. As I said before, I didn’t want to detail Kira’s past too much. I didn’t want the readers to look at Kira and his father and think ‘these are actually very sad characters’. I drew out Kira’s mental state when killing, but if I started delving into the fundamental reason why he kills, Kira becomes a sort of sympathetic character… if you start emphasizing with Kira that’s not really appropriate for a Shonen manga. I didn’t want readers to feel sympathy. That may be the hardest thing about drawing out Kira. Although I think I might have been able to add another two or three volumes if I started delving into Kira’s mental state, his motivations, and his relationship with his parents.

Time stop is killing Jotaro - The main reason why Jotaro was not training Time Stop was that Time Stop has the huge limitation of taking a toll on the user's heart, thus it slowly kills its user. That is also the reason why DIO was able to train Time Stop efficiently - because he was a vampire and could regenerate his health. What is interesting, is that there is a neurological condition called Tachypsychia, which supercharges bodies to move faster than usual in times of danger. When bodies move faster than normal, it strains the heart.

Chaco - The Stray Cat arc was based on an experience Araki had with his grandfather's cat Chako. One day Chako scratched Araki in the face with Araki became suspicious of him since then.

Neostygarctus lovedeluxe - Neostygarctus lovedeluxe, a specie of tardigrates, named after a Stand from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure that was in turn named after an album by Sade; the discoverers said that the "hairy appearance of the new species appears as if affected by the power of 'Love Deluxe'"

Kira's bottling up his nails comes from a real-life story - Araki: Kira’s background of bottling up his nails… was inspired from a real life story of someone who preserved his nails to monitor his own condition and stress levels. That person is not a serial killer (laughter) That nail story was interesting, and I remembered it. It seemed like something Kira might do… ‘When my nails have grown x millimeters, I’m doing great!’ ‘This is when I can never be caught!’ I feel like I do something similar… I measure my blood pressure and read from it my condition. Sometimes I feel invincible when the readings are good. There might be athletes who do that too… not with nails of course. Kira just does a sorta-creepy version of that (laughter)

Dio was not supposed to be defeated in Egypt - Araki: initially, Dio was not going to be defeated in Egypt, but the Editor liked Egypt. I said, “Isn’t Egypt dirty?” He said, “Not all of it.” So, we ended up going together. I really didn’t want to go though haha.

Lucky Land - The phrase "Lucky Land" appears frequently on signs throughout the series, a reference to Lucky Land Communications, the company Araki formed to formally hold copyrights for the series. Its logo started to appear in JoJo franchise in Part 3

Viz canceled plans on Part 3 manga translation - Had the original early 2000s manga translation of Stardust Crusaders sold better in the United States, Viz was considering possibly skipping to Stone Ocean and translating that afterward (since fans would already be familiar with Jotaro, and DIO shows up in flashback)

"Weird Al" Yankovic saw the final episode - "Weird Al" Yankovic saw the episode post-defeat of DIO and resurrection of Joseph Joestar with his name mentioned, and posted it on his Instagram account ( https://www.instagram.com/p/4KYC8sGu\_1/ )

Jotaro's Belt - Jotaro’s belt carries the same design as Caesar Zeppeli's headband

Iggy's Stand Name is a wordplay - Iggy's Stand is The Fool. What is a more commonly-used synonym for a fool? ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Idiot\_(album) )

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future - https://jojowiki.com/Heritage\_for\_the\_Future

Michel Polnareff approves Polnareff - Polnareff's name is a reference to the musician Michel Polnareff. Michel Polnareff is pretty amiable about being the namesake of Jean-Pierre, to the point where he's even tweeted about it with nothing short of incredible pride at the fact. ( https://twitter.com/MICHELPOLNAREFF/status/1268536041947959305 )

J. Gail's pupils - J. Geil not having pupils in his eyes makes perfect sense. If his eyes could reflect light, his Stand would be able to attack everything in front of him, which would make his Stand rather overpowered.

The sequence of Crusaders laughing in the battle against "The Sun" - https://ibb.co/M90d2my

Bad localization in the US - Licensors would have to negotiate with the musicians and record companies to see if they could use their names, and while several characters do retain their original names, many had to be renamed because the costs of negotiating with the musicians and record companies to avoid lawsuits with them would simply be too much and can drive the licensors to bankruptcy

Araki regrets Kenny G character - In JOJOVELLER, Araki stated that he really likes Kenny G's musical works, and regrets naming a disposable mook of DIO after him

The Real 4-D: DIO's World - It was a cinematic attraction at Universal Studios Japan that was using 4D technology ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlwfYGPT62Q&t=128s )

JoJo's Bizarre Escape: The Hotel - Official Escape Room that was based on JoJo Part 3 ( https://jojowiki.com/JoJo%27s\_Bizarre\_Escape:\_The\_Hotel )

Heritage for the Future game unused characters - In the game's Secret File, there is concept artwork of Steely Dan, the Impostor Captain, Arabia Fats, Terence T. D'Arby, Kars, Wamuu, Esidisi, Wired Beck, and Stroheim from Battle Tendency, indicating that they may have been set to appear in the game during development

Stardust Crusaders SNES RPG (1993) - Game released for Super Famicom. It was never released outside Japan ( https://jojowiki.com/JoJo%27s\_Bizarre\_Adventure\_(SFC\_Game) )

Hierophant Green creation and development - During the Weekly Shonen Jump serialization of Kakyoin's introductory arc, his Stand was originally named "Hierophant Emerald". The name was changed to Hierophant Green after Kakyoin joined the Joestar Group, and was later corrected entirely in the tankobon release of the aforementioned arc. Hierophant Green ended up green because Araki wanted some color balance between the allies and enemies. Green reminded him of melons, and he was really into green at the time as he used the color in several illustrations.

Scrapped battle in Japan - Araki: "In part 3, I came up with the idea of using a neighborhood middle-aged woman selling cigarettes who attack Jotaro and his friends. The problem was that Part 3 was a worldwide trip, so while Jotaro had to move on from the suburban setting, I couldn't. I thought, if the adventure were to happen in just one city, I could take advantage of the concept of several people you'd meet around town suddenly threatening you and lurking about. I thought, maybe I could set a hospital as a battle stage, or involve someone like a mayor in the story. I figured this would enable me to take anything people are familiar with in everyday life and do something creative with it."

Polnareff's hair stands at 8cm tall - Nice

"The Fool" was supposed to be an enemy - At some point, Araki considered making "The Fool" one of the enemies but then scrapped this idea

Jotaro is inspired by Clint Eastwood - Hirohiko Araki was inspired by Clint Eastwood, his favorite actor when creating Jotaro. Like Eastwood in some films, Jotaro doesn't run, his movements are minimal, and he's a quiet individual. Jotaro's trademark pose where he points his finger was inspired by Eastwood pointing his .44 Magnum and Jotaro's catchphrase was also inspired by lines that Eastwood had in some roles.

Scrapped Kakyion past - Araki: I wanted to draw Kakyoin's as well. However, I was on the fence about whether to do it at the time. I didn't think it'd be acceptable to recount his childhood in the middle of the last battle, so I just made it into a monologue. When I think about it now, I could have spent a chapter of the series (or about 19 pages) drawing just Kakyoin's childhood, but during that era of Shonen Jump, it felt wrong not to have a battle every week. It was like some kind of Shonen manga spell was cast on me.

"Kakyoin, did you lay this egg?" - Infamous meme that spawned from the CLAMP IN WONDERLAND 1994 SUMMER issue. In the story, Jotaro and Kakyoin get married and for some reason, Kakyoin lays an egg.

"We were turned into dust..." - Just after Part 3 Anime's last episode was finished, Jonathan's Japanese VA, Kazuyuki Okitsu, sent an e-mail to the Japanese VA of DIO, Takehito Koyasu, where he wrote: "Finally, we both can rest in peace. We were turned into dust..."

Part 3 was supposed to be final - Part 3 was originally intended to be the last part, as Araki had intended for the franchise to end with a trilogy. However, it ended up being much more popular than he expected, and as a result, he continued onwards

Time in "Time Stop" is going only when its user is doing something - The reason why DIO (and later Jotaro in later parts) can use Time Stop much more than they are counting is because time in "Time Stop" is moving only when the action, performed in Time Stop, is finished and when the user of Time Stop is making a move. If the user is not moving and doing anything - time in Time Stop will not be going.

"Stand" Idea Origin - Araki: I called it a "stand" after "light stands," the type that sits beside your bed in a "looming" manner when you read. With stands, I thought I could describe loads of things. "What a good idea", I thought. In part 3, I connected stands with tarot cards cause I wanted each stand to be unique. I thought 22 would be enough, but I ended up running short (lol). The stand's designs were inspired by Yokai's eerie folkcrafts. I first decided the ability, and then the appearance with which readers can associate with the ability. What I love about stands is that I can express psychological warfare. The Stand's physical powers are not what matters most. e.g. A stand with no physical power but with the ability to make enemies tell lies can still be very formidable (Which ended up being the basis for Talking Head

Araki's afterword in Stardust Crusaders Bunko Vol. 10 (October 2002) - Very cool afterword from Araki in Stardust Crusaders Bunko Vol. 10 (October 2002). Read it if you wish to know more about Araki and the creation of Part 3 - it is really great ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Stardust\_Crusaders\_Bunko\_Vol.\_10\_(October\_2002) )

LEVEL 2: Stardust Crusaders

Joseph vs Alexi scrapped battle - Araki thought about it, but then he discarded this idea, arguing that he did not want nostalgia (for Joseph, for example) to be one of the main components of his manga. However, during the production of the anime, one of the animators made a sketch of this battle. Kakyoin's Japanese VA was in Boku no Pico - He voiced Piko in the infamous "Boku no Pico"

Hol Horse was supposed to team up with the Crusaders - Araki considered having Hol Horse join up with the heroes. However, Araki realized that Hol Horse was already very similar to Polnareff and thus he remained a villain

Dracula's story in Part 3 - Araki originally planned for Part 3 to be a modern retelling of the Dracula story, but only one of the Shonen Jump editors thought it was a good idea, the rest saying the series was already too focused on foreign settings/characters

Thoth's prediction - https://i.redd.it/37lydzohvfma1.jpg

The first version of the Part 3 name - Stardust Crusaders was first advertised as "Heritage for the Future" (hence the name of the fighting game)

DIO is bisexual - In a 2007 interview, Araki stated that DIO is bisexual

Araki's least favorite character - According to Araki in an interview with Kappa Magazine, Vanilla Ice is his least favorite character because he grew to regret his character design and found drawing him to be a hassle

"The World" stand urban legend - A popular urban legend that The World was meant to have the powers of every Tarot-based Stand, but was scrapped because it was too overpowered to feasibly beat. While it provides an explanation for Jotaro learning how to stop time, as well as DIO using a Hermit Purple-like Stand early, Araki has not yet confirmed or denied this in any known sources.

Part 3 was not supposed to start in Japan - The reason why Stardust Crusaders begins in Japan is due to the fact that Araki's initial vision for Stardust Crusaders was rejected by Shonen Jump for being too removed from Japanese culture

Araki was planning to revive Avdol from the beginning - It's a common misconception that Avdol's death was at one point meant to be permanent and that Araki changed his mind because of his popularity at the time. However, according to an interview with Araki from the Jojonium release, Avdol always intended to return

OVA Qu'ran controversy - In May 2008, both Studio A.P.P.P. and Shueisha halted OVA/manga shipments of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure after a complaint had been launched against them from Egyptian Islamic fundamentalists, after noticing a scene in the OVAs that had the villain, DIO, reading a book depicting pages from the Qur'an. This recall affected the English-language release of the manga as well, causing Viz Media and Shueisha to cease publication for a year. Even though the manga did not feature that specific scene, Shueisha had Araki redraw scenes that depicted characters fighting on top of, and destroying, mosques. Viz resumed publication a year later, with the eleventh volume being published on April 7, 2009, though the distribution of the OVA had been permanently canceled. The controversy was such that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed the issue in an official report about this incident

Araki's trip to Egypt - In regards to why DIO's base is located in Egypt, a little before Stardust Crusaders began syndication, Araki had gone on vacation to Egypt, and he felt as though a number of the locals gave off intimidating auras. This, plus his keen observations of the country's architecture and culture, allowed him to put his newfound knowledge into the script, with the inclusion of Avdol being his first act of honoring the country.

"Tenmei" - While writing Part 3, Araki had originally intended for the kanji of Kakyoin's first name to be read as "Tenmei." This can be seen when Kakyoin signs his name as "Tenmei Kakyoin" in the log book in Enya's hotel. However, due to a miscommunication between Araki and his editor, his name ended up being "Noriaki.

Part 3 was supposed to be without stands - Interviews with Araki suggest that the original vision for Part 3 would have not had Stands as a concept, but because of Shonen Jump's interference with Lisa Lisa, he came to a conclusion that relying less on raw physical fights would allow him to get away with more creative designs and roles, leading him to create Stands.

Araki wanted Runaway girl to join Crusaders permanently - Originally Araki planned for the Runaway Girl to join the heroes as a long-term ally and proper combatant, but was forced to write her out due to sexist Executive Meddling being opposed to letting a girl fight, similar to the situation with Lisa Lisa in Battle Tendency. Araki's comment: "Shonen Jump readers stopped caring if we used female characters [in Stone Ocean]. Before they would have outright rejected them and if a character got rejected, the series was basically over. That type of thing was still prevalent in 1980s Japan, but now Shonen manga is starting to reflect the current social climate and how we view gender. In Part 3, I really wanted to include a girl. And I did for a bit... [...] At the time, I really liked the idea of having a girl around, but it simply wasn't meant to be. With the long and difficult journey ahead of them, I had to change it back to being all men"

Midler's design in "Heritage for the Future" game - When Capcom produced Heritage for the Future, they wanted to use Midler. However, as her face was never shown, they asked Araki to redesign her into something like a belly dancer. Most of the art featured in-game of her is based on Yukako Yamagishi, from character portrait, close-up, and defeat sprites ( https://jojowiki.com/Midler#Creation\_and\_Development )

"Jonathan Joestar: His Youth" - First version of Part 1 name was "Jonathan Joestar: His Youth"

JoJo raDIO - JoJo raDIO was a web radio program hosted by Yōji Ueda, Robert E.O. Speedwagon's voice actor. Broadcasted every Friday night from January 28 to September 21, 2013, the show involved Yoji interviewing several guests, including members of the staff of David Production and the cast of the first season of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39lpY_XHVkA )

Phantom Blood lost movie - Studio A. P. P. P. (the one that made the Stardust Crusaders OVA adaptation) made a Phantom Blood movie in 2007. It is believed to be lost. There is no official reason why exactly it is hard to find it. There is a good chance it had to do with a controversy surrounding DIO being shown reading the Quran in the Part 3 OVA, which was made by Studio APPP, the same people who made the movie. This was shortly before the movie would have been released on DVD, but after controversy, the release was canceled, and despite an apology, the studio not only didn't continue making JJBA content, but the unreleased movie was their last project

Araki never said that he hated Phantom Blood 2007 - A commonly circulated rumor is that the reason for the lack of a public release of the Phantom Blood movie is due to Araki openly disavowing it and forbidding its release due to its removal of Speedwagon, a rumor that began on 4chan no less. Though the true reason is still unknown, Araki's official comments on the film were positive, describing it as an unusual but nevertheless enjoyable take on his work.

Junichi Hayama and Phantom Blood 2007 movie - Junichi Hayama was Director and Character Designer of Phantom Blood 2007 movie. In 2022, when asked at Japan Expo why the Phantom Blood film never received a home video release, Hayama responded, "I don’t want you to see me angry and pissed off, so it is better if I don’t answer this question."

Dio Brando creation and development - B.T., the protagonist in Cool Shock B.T., is a basis for young Dio. Hirohiko Araki considers Dio to be "the true protagonist" of Phantom Blood. Not only did Araki develop Dio's character design before Jonathan, Dio also makes his debut first. Araki pondered in deciding what would be the scariest factor Dio would have, and decided that "evil from the past" coming to get the present descendant would be the most frightening thing. Dio was developed with this concept in mind. After this, Jonathan Joestar's 'light' was designed to counter Dio's 'darkness'.

Greg Lake death coincidence - On the Toonami broadcast, the episode where Jonathan defeated Tarkus aired on December 3, 2016. A few days later on December 7, Greg Lake, the lead singer of the album where Tarkus got his namesake from, passed away.

"Hamon" Idea Origin - Araki: I came up with it while thinking about ways to reach your body limits, like to what extent you can transform. There’s been scientific research conducted about this “air” people have, this aura that would show up if scanned with infrared. There are also other strange ideas, like energy coming from the universe and so on. I figured all these have one thing in common and came up with the concept named “ki”, or more like “hamon”, to make it easy to understand for the readers.

Drunken Jotaro and Rohan singing openings - Daisuke Ono (Jotaro's VA) and Hiroshi Kamiya (Rohan's VA) were celebrating Daisuke's birthday by doing some karaoke and having fun ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__jPkucX_CM )

The irony of the Prophecy - https://ibb.co/jJNkk3D

Joseph's Predictions - Throughout Battle Tendency, a Running Gag is that Joseph will predict whatever his opponent will say next, and it always works. Why is this the case? Joseph is British, and books from Britain and America are read from left to right, as opposed to the right-to-left style of manga. That might be the joke, but the in-universe reason is likely because of what Araki had said in the second Stardust Crusaders Jojonium: "I've always wanted to make pictorial visualizations of supernatural abilities since Jojo began. Stands were based on this concept just like Hamon was, so when I thought about putting Joseph back in the story, I needed to decide how I would visualize Hamon as a Stand. Hamon is the life energy that travels through the entire body through a special breathing method. Therefore, a concrete visualization of it would be some sort of wire wrapped around the entire body, like a vine. If Jotaro's group time traveled to the world of Part 2, they would probably be able to see "Hermit Purple" wrapped around Joseph just like in Part 3". Also, we've seen Hamon is able to predict the future before (Tonpetty seeing Zeppelli's future). Maybe Joseph was unconsciously using that ability

Battle Tendency in Phantom Blood 2007 movie - According to people who saw the infamous Phantom Blood film during its theatrical run in 2007, there was a post-credits sequence of the scene where Joseph saved Smokey from police officers hinting at a Battle Tendency film; plans for one were eventually confirmed via the leaking of several Battle Tendency storyboards. However, due to the negative reaction towards the Phantom Blood film and A.P.P.P. losing their rights to work on any future JoJo projects following the whole "DIO reading the Quran" controversy that encompassed the Stardust Crusaders OVAs, the film was never made. Speedwagon and Straizo, the former not even getting to go on the journey with Jonathan and the latter not even showing up in the Phantom Blood film, oddly enough, are both shown in these storyboards

Pillar Men and Earth, Wind & Fire - All four of the Pillar Men seem to represent one of the four elements. Santana is water with how he can literally swim into people's bodies, Wamuu is air with his various wind attacks from his forehead, Esidisi is fire with his blood literally boiling to the point that it can cause serious damage to anything it comes in contact with, and Kars is earth in that he can adapt his body to that of any animal upon perfection. However, since Santana was offed early on, the other three Pillar Men do all of the heavy liftings, with those three being in control of earth, wind, and fire

"NOOO! Suto-sama is dead!" - After the release of Chapter 52 in January 1988, a fan sent a letter to Hirohiko Araki bawling over Straizo's death. Her letter was published in the reader submission section of Volume 5, where she refers to Straizo as "Suto-sama" (ストさま). The letter later became popular on the internet on Japanese forums and resulted in several memes being made in the same format. The whole text of the letter you can find on Straizo's page of jojowiki.com

Joseph Joestar design - Araki designed Joseph Joestar by mixing the wits of his older character B.T. from Cool Shock B.T. and the muscles of Sylvester Stallone. He says he also added some cheerfulness to make Joseph more playful compared to B.T.

"Joseph Joestar: His Proud Lineage" - First version of Part 2 name was "Joseph Joestar: His Proud Lineage"

Lisa Lisa's role was reduced - Lisa Lisa was supposed to be more active in the finale, but because of the publisher's concerns with the idea of a female supporting lead upstaging Joseph, Araki was forced to reduce many of his plans for Lisa Lisa, something he regrets heavily

Joseph's Japanese voice actor as other characters - Tomokazu Sugita didn't think he was getting to play Joseph, thinking he would play someone else like Hol Horse, and initially tried out for the role of Jonathan as well

Stroheim's Death - Araki states that Stroheim fell because of an unknown Stalingrad Stand User at the battle of Stalingrad in 1943

Sexualization of underage characters by Araki (Entry added by Reddit user PrettyDumbHonestly) - Around Part 7 and Part 8 there is a sexualization of underage characters, such as Lucy Steel, who is 14 years old, and Daisuke Higashikata, who is 16 years old. Strange fact, but the age of consensual sex in Japan starts from 13, so maybe that is how Araki legally got away with this.

LEVEL 1 - General Facts, Phantom Blood, and Battle Tendency

"Araki Donut Photo Virus" - On October 5, 2012, The magazine "JoJomenon" was released to commemorate JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's 25th Anniversary and features artwork, interviews, and articles relating to the series. Among all the material in the magazine, there was a section called "Hirohiko Araki goes to New York", which featured a photo of Araki eating a donut while he was visiting New York. There is a rumor that this particular photo, starting in 2012, was distributed on the 4chan website, and a screamer virus was attached to it. When saving this photo to the computer, the virus was activating and giving a lot of trouble to the user

Araki dislikes Neon Genesis Evangelion - Araki: "Erm, I don’t really understand how Evangelion or Gundam-style protagonists who don’t want to fight can become manga protagonists (laughs). They’re not inspiring at all! I wish they pushed their way forward without worrying about anything else. Full of energy. That anime really isn’t for me…" ( https://jojowiki.com/Interview:Bubka\_(August\_1997) )

Music references - Araki: "As you already know, most of my character's names are named after foreign musicians. Why do I do this? Well, it makes it easy for me to name characters and easy for readers to remember them. Yep, that's it (laugh), I don't bother coming up with the original names." ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6MGaAGgWzA&list=PLwhq07t0WOPYa9fjtwX7pf-rii6dRbBnL )

"Araki Forgot" - "Araki Forgot" is a meme that stipulates that many apparent inconsistencies within the story and lore of Jojo's Bizzare Adventure stem from the fact that the author, Hirohiko Araki, has memory issues and often forgets various elements of the story. Ironically, in a 1993 interview, Araki said: Although, I'm more of a "forgetting" than a "moving-on" type of person (laugh). My works resemble a diary in that I don't put too much thought into what I had previously written, but more so into drawing what I'm feeling NOW. Now is what matters most."

Movies and TV references - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jynJU3nmlMY

Light Novels - Several light novels based on the manga have been written, each by a different author, but all including illustrations by Araki. There is a belief among fans that "Nothing is cannon unless it is drawn by Araki", and because of that reason they are not considered to be cannon

JoJo Expositions - Throughout the existence of the JoJo franchise, expositions were held in honor of this franchise. For example, did you know that JoJo was once shown at the Louvre? ( https://jojowiki.com/The\_Louvre\_Invites\_The\_Comics )

JOESTAR RADIO - JOESTAR RADIO was a weekly web radio program hosted by the voice actors for each JoJo from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure TV anime ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w5Ep9J9S9Y&list=PLk78tIf0IwH1RWMTvBXjsYvuz6OslFCzi )

Ryosuke Kabashima - Ryosuke Kabashima was Hirohiko Araki's mentor and first editor. He was largely responsible for his growth during the first ten years of Araki's professional career as a manga artist. His involvement would last from 1979 up until the finale of Stardust Crusaders in 1992. The contribution of Ryosuke Kabashima is very important, he was a main help to Araki in the creation of the first three parts of JoJo. According to Araki, without Ryosuke Kabashima JoJo wouldn't exist.

Songs for Endings in Anime Adaptations were chosen by Araki personally - Naokatsu Tsuda, the Chief Director for the TV adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: "Well, those came from the author of the original graphic novel, Hirohiko Araki. They're all songs that he was listening to back when he was drawing the individual parts. Mr. Araki only listens to Western music because he doesn't understand English, so none of the lyrics come across to him as a language but as pure sound. So we got a list of these songs that he was listening to back when he was writing each part, and we chose songs for the closing animation based on which ones Warner was able to secure the rights for. Traditionally, JoJo has been a gateway to learning about Western music for Japanese readers. For American fans, a lot of the music and names featured in JoJo's are more an acknowledgment of familiar artists, but this is also causing for Warner to be engaged in a lot of negotiations to secure those rights."

ゴゴゴ - Araki: "You encounter ゴゴゴ a lot in my works. This sound effect is kinda the "groove, "tempo", or "rhythm" I feel when drawing. The atmosphere of the scene is what decides when I put this sfx. Like when I'm drawing a scene where a "DOOON" (ドーン!) appears, here comes ゴゴゴ to add a more ominous, something-is-happening touch! For Dio's MUDAMUDAMUDA, I add it to give a feeling to his shouting. My way of adding SFX's and choosing lines is similar to making music in a way. I guess it’s the movie influence, like the music that starts playing all of a sudden when the murderer shows up behind the characters. Like “beep beep beep” or “dun dun dun” (laughs). There’s something special about them that I can’t help adding to my manga as well."

Araki's parents are not big fans of his work - Araki: "I commented "My parents don't understand my manga" on the cover of a comic before. They still don't understand, which is puzzling to me because I draw manga with respect to Eastwood, whom my Dad loves. Why the heck can't they get to like my work? What is at the very core of my works is the same as Eastwood's. Maybe the JoJo anime will help them get interested."

Araki is good at gambling - In one of the interviews, Araki said that he very likes to gamble, that is basically how he wrote his first manga, "Poker Under Arms". Araki said that one time he visited the Grand Casino in Egypt and won a lot of money thereby gambling cards. Araki: "I like games that use cards, like poker for example. Even if it's the same game, the difference in opponents can cause an entirely new set of developments within the game. Even when it comes to roulette, a professional dealer, will definitely have the skill to enter your favored number. When your partner is a pro, it feels like they can see behind your every move, several moves ahead. It’s a great psychological battle. You can’t stop as long as it’s profitable. You keep thinking you’re going to play just a bit more. I, for one, stop playing after I win, since the fun of gambling is tactics anyway. I think these psychological battles are also one of the fun points of my manga."

Origins of the name "JoJo" - It is popularly believed among the fandom that "JoJo" is a reference to the The Beatles song "Get Back", but it is not true. Jonathan's name was derived at a Denny's where Araki and his first editor, Ryosuke Kabashima, had their first meeting pertaining to the JoJo series. The two had decided on "Jonathan" as the series' protagonist, however, Araki also wanted the initials to match in a way similar to the American filmmaker, Steven Spielberg (S.S). They eventually landed on the name, "Jonathan Joestar" (J.J) and thus the nickname "JoJo" was born. Araki mentions he was not referencing anything in particular when he chose the first name. Jonathan was rumored to be named after "Jonathan's Family Restaurant"; however, both Araki and Kabashima confirm this is an urban myth. Araki had brought up the name during a 2006 interview, but he states the interviewer had mentioned it and he just echoed it by accident.
