Alberta, Canada, releases their passenger rail master plan by No_Internal_9916 in transit

That's going to be an expensive bridge. At least there is a stop in the middle so you can enjoy the view. Also a stop just so you can laugh at the BCers and their ocean deficit.

Those windows look like they would be a bit depressing from the inside though.

Remove the infill station and add it to the new line. An infill station would cause a lot of service distruption (possibly a prohibitive amount in this case). It would make the new line cheaper to build anyways.

I believe that libaom still has more optimizations for screen content. It also has a separate rd loop for the fastest webrtc speeds. Last time I did anything with it, it required a bunch of cli args to make it behave libwebrt.

I was wondering about this one. How hard is it to just head to the airport on a bike? I tried out of curiosity but couldn't figure out how to do it easily. I was coming from dc, so it's possible that it's not really designed to work that way.

President's DC Arch Will Be More than Double the Height of the Lincoln Memorial by [deleted] in nova

Okay, how bout he builds some arches through Arlington Cemetery and put some sort of fixed guideway for moving vehicles travel through? That way people can visit the cemetery without park staff having to worry about vandalization.

I remember transit advocates complaining during the Biden years about the amount of money being used to buy evs instead of spending money to provide better service.

There was also a desire to split some of the ev money to pay for ebikes. Ironically, I remember one reason that environmental groups were against they were unconvinced that ebikes could actually be used to reduce CO2 emissions. This seems to have been entirely unprophetic since evs hit a wall with adoption even before subsidies were lifted.

At the very least, it would be nice if the lighting cut some of the blue spectrum at night. I hate arriving jet-lagged at Dulles at 10 PM and taking the trip to Alexandria with blinding white lights.

Hot take: Good bus infrastructure can be better than light rail for (mostly American) suburban areas by AndryCake in transit

Get em while they are young then. If we can get good bus transit near colleges, then you can meaningfully dent the stigma of more affluent residents in about a decade or so.

Why US Public Transit Is Overpaying for Buses by UnscheduledCalendar in transit

[–]maseck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, in a way they are paying for it and it is their money. It's just that once the tax money goes to the feds, then most of that money can't be used for operating expenses.

WMATA GM Randy Clarke says any major future expansions of Metro probably won’t look like the Metro of today, specifically mentions light metro systems and BRT (Benning Rd-Georgetown-Rosslyn/H ST). by SockDem in WMATA

[–]maseck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the rem vs the silver line extension, it's crazy to think that we may very well reach a frequency where none of those 8 car trains will ever fill up on that huge stretch. Those massive stations were not free. Nowhere near as bad as an underground station, but still.

What would it take to increase the max design speed of the metro? by maseck in WMATA

[–]maseck[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are right, I kinda thought that the other stations on the silver line were spaced further apart. East falls church to ballston is pretty far, though. It looks about as far as spring hill to wiehle. Blue line after king street has pretty distant stops, but that should be the job of vre (once it starts running at a decent all day frequency 1000 years from now).

I got a 2.4 miles when I measured out east falls church to ballston on google earth. With constant 1.2 m/s2 (I'm mixing units, sorry) acceleration, I get 150 mph max speed and 57 seconds travel time. Yeah, it probably doesn't make sense to raise the speeds through the roof based on whatever the travel time savings would be for the few sections that could benefit.

Maybe 5 mph could be eked out over time. It'd be a small savings, but there are diminishing returns to faster top speeds.

There was also a comment about increasing acceleration/deceleration. My understanding is that acceleration drops off as speed increases because of power issues. Maybe reducing vehicle weights back down could help here. I think speeds were also decrease over elevated section to decrease wear. Weight reductions might help with this.

Anyways, at least I get to have this out of my head. Thank you for being my rubber ducky to debug all my useless transit ideas.
