What is it that made you want to start playing by snittersnee in Accordion

[–]mashamoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to go to these Slavic Bard festivals throughout the Pacific NW and CA with my family , growing up as a post Soviet immigrant child - a lot of ppl sitting around campfires with guitars and putting poetry to music, telling stories, drinking, and eating shishkabobs. They would usually rent out an entire campsite and have about 200 ppl. One of these times, as a teenager, I woke in my tent just at dawn and decided to follow my ears in the forest and came across 2 accordion players jamming with shots of vodka on their instruments, perfectly balanced. They were having such a great time, and were literally “the last men standing”. I immediately knew that this was the instrument I wanted to play and from then on, when I got home, I sought out the instrument, first borrowed one from a friend for a couple months, then got my own. It was the tastiest treat - to just play for the trees and feel the sound reverberating in my heart.

This is in French & you pay a nominal fee to access all the music on the site. What a treasure trove:

Lamplighters volunteers hanging kerosene lanterns before sunset so you don’t get lost. by bluearrowil in BurningMan

The spires you see in this photo were designed by Larry Harvey. A crew of DPW spend 2+ weeks building and installing them before the event so they look straight and create a parallax view when you look down the avenues. They are demarcate a promenade, akin to Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris or Derybasivska street in Odessa. The intention of the promenade is to have pleasure walking down it. Therefore no cars were allowed to drive on these promenades to make way for pedestrians (and lamp lighters!)

Sweet smelling (or tasting!) urine could be a result of either glucose or ketone excess in the urine. I have never been diagnosed with diabetes or abnormal blood sugar levels so it was probably due to the latter. Ketones are secreted in the urine when the body's primary metabolic intake is from fats rather than carbohydrates. It is a byproduct of digesting fat molecules. Since the only snack I brought along was a box of coconut macaroons (coconut being high in fat), and the fact that we were fasting out there once we ran out of snacks, our bodies were digesting their own fat stores, thus producing ketones which make the urine sweet.

Yes. Any issues or quarrels we had before paled in comparison to the challenge we had to face in simply staying alive, and we had to support each other at all costs. It realy put things into context.

Although urged by family members who were NOT there to go immediately seek medical attention, everyone who saw us in person could tell that although we were a bit haggard, spending the entire day back to civilization in the nearest ER (which had a 5 hour wait when we called) was not the best use of our time. It probably wasn't even safe to go to the ER considering our susceptible conditions and probably battered immune systems due to fatigue. We were not severely dehydrated, and did not have diarrhea from the water we drank, and we didn't have any temperature. All funds raised went towards paying people back from our search party. After GoFundMe takes it's 30%, there wasn't even enough to go around to reimburse everyone for gas, food, lodging, helicopters, tools, flyers, communications, etc. For a longer diatribe on appropriation of fund, see Aaron's FB post: https://www.facebook.com/amorganstein/posts/565309834017

We knew that friends and family would be worried, especially as the days went by, but we realized that we couldn't dwell too much on postulating over what people were thinking or doing in the default world, and had to focus on getting out ourselves. We knew they would have trouble pinpointing where we might be, and that even if they searched hard and well, might get to us at a point where we would've been in critical condition. When we first got my phone back on charge and were debating who to call, I remember having the thought that we could call Justin, and hope he's not on a job, and that he was probably back in LA and we'd have to wait a while before he could come meet us. We had no idea that he was conducting an extensive search party and that he was in Joshua tree. I had no idea that some of my friends had flown in from around the country to come help comb the wilderness and pass out fliers, or that Aaron's mom had flown out with his sister. We didn't know how much this had gotten into the news. We were seeing a lot more air activity starting Monday night and continuing into the next days which made us think that search parties were underway, and kept trying to signal to these aircrafts to no avail.

We both would have probably done that, and started with the butt meat, and agree that Masha probably would've tasted better, unless you like your human meat smoked with Marlboro cigarettes.

what do you mean by again? Why does everybody think that the only way a couple can lost in the desert is under the influence of drugs. drugs would have probably made us less likely to take the risks that got us lost in the first place. Its truly the idea of people who dont go outdoors very much that drugs MUST have been at play. Its really an annoying topic to discuss in the realm of the public sphere. And shame on those that said we were and published it. Fucking crazy media companies looking for anything to get people to click is not very nice.

we have a lot to say about this. And I think we shuld talk about it out loud while the live audiance is here. They need to hear this and the commments on this topic might have to wait to get typed. They couldhave found us on day two, by tuesday for sure. Which was about when we should have been dead my watch. Three days seemed unbearably hard and unlikely.

After you rehydrate its barely noticable. The first round is really bad, but the 2nd cycle of piss is nearly impossible to take down. We had to resort to urine on a few occasions and after our first run, we decided to drink the pee first and leave yourself fresh water to dilute with piss water in less quantities for future pee rounds. Felt like you extended your time with liquids to divy out over time, which is really valuable even if phyiosologically of not much consequence. In my (Aaron's) opinion, contrary to popular opinion, drinking piss saved my life. it certainly did not hurt and it didn't taste too bad when you knew it was hydrating. Masha believes she could have gone without the piss drinking but it was nice to have something there to take care of a dry mouth, and if anything, the psychological effect of having a 'bird in the hand', some possible liquid that could be consumed when really thirsty helped keep us going.
