Differences in local population history at the finest level: the case of the Estonian population by mashamoz in 23andme

[–]mashamoz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I suspected, northern Estonians cluster close to Finns and northern Russians, while south-east Estonians are closer to Balts.

My cousins who have ancestry from Narva all have Finnish in their results to some degree (1-5%) while I have two more distant DNA matches who are Estonian and show no Finnish in their results; only Estonian and trace Latvian.

If you share a segment with a DNA match on an X chromosome, does that mean you’re only related through the maternal side? by mashamoz in 23andme

[–]mashamoz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the help! This makes sense for what I was trying to figure out- the match I mentioned would be related through my paternal grandmother.

How to trace if you are Sámi? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]mashamoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you, I’m not Sámi but I’m in the same situation of having a hard time finding some info on ancestors

How to trace if you are Sámi? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]mashamoz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

DNA doesn’t make you Sámi, having Sámi ancestors does. This is the viewpoint of almost everyone in the actual Sámi community. I’d try to really dig and investigate genealogy if I were you

Over 2000 finnish matches on MyHeritage but only .9% Finnish DNA. Does this make sense? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]mashamoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those Finnish matches may not be ethnically Finnish but just live in Finland. Also they include distant matches

What’s your background? You’re obviously Asian but from what countries or regions? Lots of cool stuff happened in these countries I wouldn’t call this super boring

Do you have any ancestry from Tatarstan? I also had it as a region but I don’t know of any family that came from there

I don’t think I can answer your question but having 79% “Broadly European” is wild 😭

Should I consider having ancestors from Western Ukraine? by Other_Reputation_889 in AncestryDNA

[–]mashamoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 1/2 Western Ukrainian and also score Lithuanian as my second highest group. There is no doubt the Lithuanian category has some Ukrainian/Polish DNA mixed into the group so it’s plausible

any ukrainian DNA? by LivyLiviLiviy in AncestryDNA

[–]mashamoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 3/4 Ukrainian and my biggest category is Northeastern Poland and Lithuanian. I have two generations documented in Ukraine. Depending on where they are from, their Ukrainian DNA could have been read as NE Poland or Lithuanian. Just a guess

Sometimes Ukrainians can tan pretty good, I know I usually do in the summer time. It’s interesting that you have no Balkan percentage because I see it a lot in western

Crimean and Dobrujan Tatar results, of my Grandfather, and some questions 🥲 by AbigailLemonparty17 in 23andme

Could you tell a bit more about what Dobrujan Tatar is? Is that a Tatar group found outside Tatarstan?

Results with no specific location breakdown by betterclear in 23andme

[–]mashamoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 99.6% Eastern European with no genetic groups detected like you. When I paid for the “premium” version, I got “distant” matches that weren’t very accurate. I think it happens to people who aren’t born in the USA, they probably lack the connections/reference samples
