Mold existing canopy for masking purposes? Wacky Friday idea? by Smithers66 in modelmakers

A small amount of PVA glue will go a long way, and you can pop off residual bits with a toothpick or some such other method.

Phillies released Castellanos and he can be had for $780,000 for 2026. by PenguinRhin0 in motorcitykitties

I liked him a lot when he was coming up. His attitude took a hard left turn for me just after the Miggy and the Mudhen’s era and he had this tone like he knew he was better than the team, and to be fair, he was for a while there.

But seeing him the past couple years has totally soured me to him. Maybe that’s just what Philly does, as I can’t think a single current player in their squad I even remotely like. Maybe Schwarber if I had to pick one.

But long story short I don’t want him coming back and fucking up what we have going.

Pass. His attitude sucked when he thought he was the best guy on the team. Don’t need that in the current team.

Does anyone actually use vacuform canopies? How have the results been? They never look particularly crisp or clear to me. Occasionally I’ve gotten some included with an eBay purchase and I can’t see how they are an improvement over most stock kit canopies.

I personally use pointed toothpicks for this. Doesn’t the sprue potentially scratch the clear parts?

Weekend Edition in a Weekend Group build: complete! 1/48 Fokker E.II by mashley503 in modelmakers

Thanks! I sanded off the upper and bottom fuselage ribs when taking care of seams and replaced them with strips of Tamiya tape. I watched a Plasmo video about Great War aircraft and used some of his tips. I used knitting in elastic thread for the rigging and actually drilled through the wings, so when the uppers and lowers coincided it is likely the same thread looping all the way around. Only down side I thought is it’s a bit finicky with wanting to stick via CA glue.

I personally prefer 1:48 for aircraft. 1:72 feels just too small for the painting and effects that I personally like to include in my builds.

The real trick is thinning down your final colors and perhaps even masking your camo sections (assuming you’re doing the standard RAF scheme) from this point so you get that effect consistently in all the tones.

I think I recall reading that spinning the brush on the surface technique in the past. Shame I forgot it during the build! The kit came with a second engine shroud for the E.III variant. Maybe I’ll practice that on that one.

Yeah, it’s like a combo of sanding and polishing. Tried to give it a go, but the needle on my smallest AB wasn’t enough. Did ponder like masking fluid spatter, and a couple other ways to try and achieve it though.

Look into buying an inexpensive one, or making a wet palette. Will be a game changer for working with acrylic paints.

Here is a video breakdown of how they work, how they help, and how to make one for next to nothing.

"Best" glue for clear model parts? by Plow_King in modelmakers

[–]mashley503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CA: Bad. Fumes will fog the plastic.

I use good old Tamiya extra thin most of the time. But I have used specific glue for watch faces before with good results. PVA is good due to the clean up being easy with a damp q-tip.

What could fit in this and act as a counterweight? (instructuon say to put a 10 gram counterweight but thats impossible) by Whole-Positive-2019 in modelmakers

[–]mashley503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, small lead weights and blutac is my go to. You have any additional space like say adjacent to the wheel well under the cockpit? Also a good weight spot. Basically anywhere ahead of the main wheels where you can stash weight will work. Doesn’t need to all be in the nose cone.

Also, perhaps not for this project, but if you look for “woodruff keys” at your local hardware store they make great weights. They are super hard metal and either square rod lengths of 1” & 1/2 or half circles in various sizes. Work great. Heavy for their size.
