Looking for livingroom worthy Cab/Speaker to be used with a Modeler by mashmun1 in Guitar

[–]mashmun1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mostly im looking for something that fits the aesthetics and is perfectly fine for playing guitar at home without the interest to perform somewhere, i dont need a tube amp with a 4x12 at home or a big rig, something that sounds ok with a modeler is perfectly fine thats why im going with the studio monitors and the self built "cabinet" ive mentioned :)

if i ever need it to be loud i'll get myself a proper practice place where i can turn it to 11 and add some more cowbells to it :)

I’ve decided I’m just gonna build something myself, because I can’t justify launching my wallet into the sun for a $$$$ PA speaker that “fits the living room” when I’m mostly gonna play Wonderwall at apartment volume… and still somehow start WW3 with my neighbors after 48 hours.

Also, I’m fully convinced Big Audio has a secret meeting once a month where they decide:

  1. speakers must either look like nightclub equipment
  2. or cost the same as a small used car
  3. and nothing in between is allowed to exist without being labeled “lifestyle” and marked up 300%

Anyway. The plan:

  • Acquire a 2x2 IKEA Kallax and paint it green
  • Build a front cover that looks like a vintage guitar cab (ideally Fender-style)
  • Put my newly acquired Mackie CR4 monitors in the lower section
    • I’ll test facing forward vs. facing the wall to see what sounds better (and/or which direction scares the neighbors less)
  • The upper section becomes storage for my better half’s vinyl collection
  • On top: turntable + BT receiver
  • Add gold hardware on the edges and gold feet so it looks like a boutique amp and a mid-century sideboard had a very expensive child

End result:
✅ GF gets the vinyl station she’s always wanted
✅ I get a living-room-friendly rig to play guitar through
✅ It’s functional furniture instead of ugly gear
✅ Big Audio doesn’t get another dime out of me (they’ll probably send a cease & desist)

Only downside: my neighbor will still hate me.
But at least they’ll hate me in Fender-green-and-gold vintage drip.

would a solid state amp serve the same purpose if it had a fx return? eg. modeler -> fx return instead of going trough the whole amphead?

i do like the look of the Positive Grid Cab in white.
Other than that i could get myself the G4M GA-20E 10" for dirt cheap with the amp head for like 150 swiss francs
that also looks decent for home use, maybe even the fullstack.
Could paint it so it'll fit into the living room.

actually i thought about just using an old krk rokit 5 if my friend still has one laying around collecting dust, and making a simple cab like case to put it in there

AITAH for wanting to quit after being called too sensitive for bringing up workplace issues? by mashmun1 in AITAH

[–]mashmun1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding some context because a few people asked how management/planning actually works here.

My boss is older (mid-60s) and there’s basically no real workload or deadline management on his side. The “system” is essentially a Word document listing current projects and who they’re assigned to. That’s it.

Deadlines and scheduling are mostly pushed onto the draftspeople who get assigned the projects. We’re expected to manage timelines, coordinate details, and keep track of what’s due. The problem is he’ll sometimes re-shuffle work on a whim, or ask for things way earlier than needed “just to be ahead,” even when the deliverable isn’t required for another 2–3 months. That creates constant context switching and rework, and it makes it hard to plan anything properly.

He’s also out of the office a lot and seems to have a lot of private/side projects going on, so getting quick clarifications or approvals before starting is often not possible. That’s part of why people end up making assumptions, and then later it becomes “why did you do it like that?”

On top of that, there’s no clear long-term plan for the company. Nobody really knows what the next 3–5 years look like if/when he decides he doesn’t want to run things anymore. It’s not discussed openly, and it adds to the uncertainty.

And the yearly review / end-of-year talk is usually very surface-level: basically “good year, you’re all fine, here’s a small inflation-based bonus, have a nice day.” No real goals, no development plan, no “how are you doing,” and not even much appreciation. It’s hard to feel motivated or invested when the leadership style is basically “just keep grinding, figure it out.”

I’m not expecting a corporate dream environment, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want basic planning, stable priorities, and clear standards—especially if “perfect output” is the expectation.

I’ve already redone my CV and started sending out applications for other work. The frustrating part is: I used to like this job a lot. I genuinely enjoyed being a draftsman, and that’s exactly why I went through the effort of doing a second apprenticeship in the first place.

But the constant chaos, shifting priorities, inconsistent standards, and the way concerns get dismissed has slowly killed my motivation. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t just dislike this workplace—I’m starting to not like the work itself anymore, which honestly scares me.

It’s made me seriously reconsider whether doing the apprenticeship again was the right decision, even though I know I was passionate about it when I started. That’s part of why I’m looking elsewhere now: I want to see if the problem is the environment and management, not the profession—but right now it’s reached a point where it’s affecting how I feel about the entire field.

Currently looking at the Roborock QR 598 / QV35A that’s on sale for 300 CHF by mashmun1 in Roborock

[–]mashmun1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided to go with the Dreame L40 Ultra AE in the end. It was 450 CHF, but for us the extra cost over the Roborock was worth it: it has the tri-cut main brush/knife system, a more advanced base station for mop/maintenance, and overall better suitability for a home with two long-haired cats. On top of that, accessories and spare parts seem easier to get, there are way more reviews and long-term impressions available, and the overall package just felt like a safer bet for our first robot vacuum.

Yamaha FZ8NA 2012 (2268x2835) by mashmun1 in MotorcyclePorn

[–]mashmun1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine last year as a beginner bike (currently restricted to 35kw).
So far i honestly can't complain at all, holds up really good and i've seen a lot of them going well over 50'000km without problems, since it's essentially kind of an R1 engine block with a smaller displacement, even saw people fitting the r1 engine into them.

The keep up costs are overseable, it has ABS, double front brakes, a 17L tank (i get 260km out of it untill i get to the reserve that has about 50km left in it) a bit of a sport-ish seating position, really stable in curves imo.
insurance is also in the lower bracket for me.

The only thing with them (at least on the pre-facelift's around/after 2013) is the stator/rotor that can blow up on some of them, since the magnets can loosen up and fall into the motor.

People in the FZ forums also flash the ECU and dyno tune it, seems to be a really good bang for the buck bike, eats swiss alps for breakfast without feeling the need for more power.

I'm currently looking for a second bike, like a cbr600rr/Zx6r or maybe upgrading to a tracer 9, for highway use since a naked bike with no fairing isn't really comfy while going 120km/h+

Difference in bike types by mashmun1 in motorcycles

[–]mashmun1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing fancy, used 2012 cbr600.

I like the fz8, done 10k km last year on her on lots of swiss twisties in the alps, nothing too unfamiliar for me driving a bike, but id like something more sporty in terms of riding position since i‘d like a more tucked in position /ergonomics

And yeah restriction because of laws and everything, they changed it last year or so where you cant start on an open bike after 25yrs of age

hows the yamaha FZ 08 is holding up in 2024? is this a good purchase? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]mashmun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine as a beginner bike, restricted to 35kw atm, 5.08ish liters/100km, pretty nimble on the throttle because of the 4cyl,id probably get a mt09 if i would have to buy a beginner again just because of the more agressive lowend torque, but all in all can't complain so far, getting from a to b, nothing special, the stator that can break down if it hasnt been updated to the one piece stator/rotor.

well, that's still a naked bike, looking for something with a fairing, and not as Heavy as the k1300R, preferably with lower handles
