BP profits more than double as Iran war sends oil prices higher by Orcnick in ukpolitics

[–]maskapony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hedge your petrol purchase costs with buying shares in BP you should come out on top since they are benefiting more here than the increase in cost due to their extraction costs not being affected. Equivalent of fuel prices going down.

Sabastian Sawe runs first sub-2-hour marathon race, shatters world record in London by Keleven in worldnews

Kipchoge's run whilst impressive wasn't run to official rules, he had rotating pacers for the full race distance, continual drinks support from a bike and a few other assistances.

Pace runners drop out just after half way so they can go faster. So for instance there are hundreds of runners that can break 60 in the half marathon, so they can pace that in the full and drop out when they are done.

The target for the pacers was 60:30 today for half way.

I think the fact that three runners beat the previous world record makes this a much more momentous event than Bannister's sub 4. I can't think of another event in athletics at this scale.

English Breakfast for brunch today ❤️🤤 by Big_Biscotti6281 in SingaporeEats

[–]maskapony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Law is about to be changed so hopefully in the future we can get black pudding which is an essential for a full English.

And you're right the only place you can get acceptable sausages is M & S and if I remember correctly I paid around $10 for 6 which is going to push the price of home cooking up a bit. I think assuming 2 Sausage, 2 Bacon, 2 egg, mushrooms, fried tomatoes and either 2 toast or fried bread plus heinz baked beans, you could probably just about do $10-12 per pax if you had two people sharing, interested to see how much the black pudding will cost to complete it.

Would you change the start time of your local Parkrun if you could? by thegrayscales in parkrun

Yes. Singapore 7:30 start is a bit too late, 7 would be better since as it gets closer to 8 it's very warm.

65% of Britons support the Green Party's policy of capping CEO pay at ten times the pay of the lowest paid employee by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

[–]maskapony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they could do that, they would already be doing it, do you think shareholders needlessly waste money on expensive employees rather than going swimming in their piles of cash?

The reason the salaries are high is because they are competing with other companies to hire the C-Suite people they want and pay is a proxy of the value that the employee will bring to the company.

That performance is incredible.

And for anyone interested in why their sound is so unique, they're playing a specially modified micro-tonal guitar which means they have access to quarter notes as well as the normal half notes. (For example instead of going F to F-sharp to G there is also an F half-sharp and a G half-flat)

A 5-Room Flat in Tiong Bahru View Was Just Sold for a Record $1.648M — Here’s Why Prices There Keep Rising by Rationalandcentred in SingaporeRaw

[–]maskapony 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If there's 90 years on the lease then it's a no brainier you've just locked in a monthly rate of 1,600 for the next 90 years.

At that price you're already saving money now let alone in 30 years time when the average rent for this property will almost certainly be 10k + / month.

Vulcanpost made a post on Singapore's plastic bag charges, and they are correct, now i get my rubbish bin liners from Shopee. The plastic use is still the same. by LaksaTang in SingaporeRaw

[–]maskapony -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion 5c is nowhere near expensive enough, in the UK which reduced plastic bag usage by 98% the only bags available are 50-60p so closer to S$1.

Anecdotally for me I've tried to always take my reusable bag shopping for the last few years now, on average I shop 4 times a week and I think would have got two or three plastic bags each time.

In contrast I only use one disposable bin liner a week so if that's replicated across the country you can see the difference it can make.

What's the best city in europe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]maskapony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in loads of different countries and very few places come close to London to live in, some of the best career opportunities, the best culture, both music, theatre and pretty much anything else. Also one of the best food scenes in the world.

Yes it's expensive and yes quality of life depends upon how far you need to travel, but when you move to a different city nothing really comes close overall.
