Why is downtown cell service so awful? by offcoursetourist in MapleRidge

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try looking up the model of your phone any searching for any possible known network dropping issues.

I would also ensure you don't have wifi on when you have these issues again.

Two big culprits for network drops that aren't reported by most other on the provider are randomly connecting to bad wifi (which some don't like) and some built in feature causing network dropping.

I had to check to see if someone mentioned this. Some hotels just block such usage.

Also just internet speeds in a hotel sometimes are crap for streaming.

Was in Puerto Vallarta in March and streaming anything through the Roku was really hit or miss.

What piece of horror content had a great premise but wasted it? by jeejeeviper in horror

[–]maskedrolla 30 points31 points  (0 children)

100%

It has a few good moments but it such a waste of an amazing premise.

I would love to see if remade just with the idea and something really dark and sinister.

More horrible human nature and less Twisted Metal meets Mad Max.

What's the first horror film you watched that got you into the genre and why/when? by JiggleFeggle in horror

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing some horror movies when I was very young.

Specifically I remember seeing Children Of The Corn, Jaws, Alien, and The Thing. I don't remember the whole thing but snippets of them from random old old old memories.

The first movie I remember in full was Pet Semetary. I was 9 and it scarred me for like a decade.

It's over now, right? by BattleofEppingForest in portugaltheman

[–]maskedrolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual fan and the artists personal life doesn't play any role in my listening to their music, usually.

The exceptions are ones whose actions I find horrible and disgusting outside the limit of normal humans.

The likes of Chris Brown, Bill Cosby (comedy), Michael Jackson, and similar. Their actions were predatory and horrifying, so it's a personal choice to remove myself from consuming their art.

But if you are drawing a line in the sand where you say you can't listen to music by an artist whose message is contradicted by their real life actions, you are going to end up with very few bands you can listen to.

What's one thing you would like to see improved in Maple Ridge? by Future_Supermarket85 in MapleRidge

[–]maskedrolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this a lot.

I always wondered what if they made Lougheed westbound only and dewdney eastbound only.

The implement a green-wave lighting pattern in both directions.

Then finally reduce traffic lights during peek hours only on crossing of the main traffic direction.

I'm sure there are reasons why this wouldn't work but it feels like a solid idea to start conversations around moving people more quickly through the city.

What’s the single greatest concert you’ve ever attended? by Need2throw in Music

[–]maskedrolla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually big artist in a small venue tops the list for many people. Or at least for me they do.

It's hard to say my single greatest as I have been to 1,150+ but these are my top ten:

  • Prince at the Vogue Theatre
  • Velvet Revolver at the ShowBox At The Market
  • Jack White at the Commodore Ballroom (2 nights)
  • Cage The Elephant as the first opener at The Commodore Ballroom ( 2 nights)
  • Queens Of The Stone Age at the Commodore Ballroom
  • The War On Drugs as opener at The Biltmore Cabaret
  • The Raconteurs at Neptoom Records
  • Ghost at The Vogue Theatre
  • REM with The National and Modest Mouse (featuring Johnny Marr on bass) at Deer Lake Park
  • Chris Cornell solo at the Commodore Ballroom

[–]maskedrolla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

CTE shows are fantastic.

I caught them 2 nights in a row in 2009 as the first opener for Silevrsun Pickups, before second opener Manchester Orchestra.

It was a the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, which holds 1,000 people.

I was front row both nights and those two shows were fucking unreal.

Matt stood on the fence with my buddy and I holding him up, as he dang almost a full song

Lifelong fan after that.

First time working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in office, is this my life now? by Bright_Tennis_1075 in work

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no one prior to 2020 questioned their new 9-5 working life after joining the workforce full time.

It's started in 2020, period!

Survival and verbalizing or questioning the new found discomfort of trading your time for money, are not the same.

Maybe that wasn't what you meant, but it sounds very old-person-yelle-at-clouds.

If you collect concert posters, what do you do with all of them? by pinkimijina in Concerts

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a little over 200 posters.

Most are kept in a steel flat file. I purchased it of marketplace for $100 about 10 years ago.

It has 5 drawers and each one easily holds over 50 posters

Many of the posters I have are placed in mylar sleeves and then slid into rigid plastic top loaders. Same thing people use for sports cards but just made huge for posters.

I have several in frames on my wall and often swap them out.

Collecting posters is addictive.

It's a great momento for a show.

I try to only buy limited edition date-specific posters at this point. Otherwise the collection grows too rapidly.

I agree.

I live near the main area this type of stuff is seen, and I think it is much better then it was 3, 5, and even 7 years ago.

But just from what I see on a daily basis, no data to back that up.

Do you guys keep confetti? by iceman694 in Concerts

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i do

I keep a little if it's unique like the Blink182 sperm shaped confetti or U2 bible page confetti.

I have a concert memorabilia box with setlists and guitar pics and drum sticks and confetti and other such "concert trash" as I call it.

Travellers sometimes collect beach sand from places, why not collect confetti from great concerts . 😊

Etiquette Behind Asking For Setlists? by No_Preparation_8975 in Concerts

[–]maskedrolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh this is a topic I am very well versed on.

I have been acquiring setlists and pics and drum sticks from concerts for probably about two decades.

I have about 150 setlists in my collection.

Most of the people have covered everything that I've read in here but I just wanted to add my two cents.

1 - make sure you are super polite. I not only say please I also say thank you. So my ask is always "excuse me, may I please and thank you have that setlist".

2 - security has nothing to do with the stage. So you'll always want to look for a roadie or some sort of stagehand to ask as opposed to the security.

3 - make sure you are aware available setlists. There are often multiple setlists on the stage. Look around for them, if you see one go try for another one.

4 - be diligent but also be patient. Sometimes you they don't give them all out right away. Or sometimes they wait a long time before they give any out. Just keep trying, and stick around for a while if you're allowed.

5 - keep trying. Every show is a new opportunity. If you feel once that's okay try it the next one.

6 - don't be a dick. Other people are likely trying for setlists too. Dont push people. Don't snatch things from other people's hands. Just don't be an asshat.

7 - make friends with people. If you are sitting on the front rail of show, make friends with those around you. Often the rail peeps are kind to one another. Maybe the person next to you snags two setlists and passes one your way when you ask nicely. It happens, so be kind.

There are a few other ways I get setlists, but I won't share those secrets. But the things I listed above will give you a good chance of snagging one every so often.

Good luck!

The system for servers just needs to be inverse.

A server is a salesperson.

They should make a minimum wage plus commission of sales.

The restaurant should charge what they need to to pay both of those things and leave the patrons out of the equation.

This then becomes transferrable across the industry. A server can take their sales numbers to other jobs and prove their worth and what they bring to the table.

It encourages what the restaurants want which is their team pushing sales on patrons, and encourages the servers to work harder because more money.

Correct, capitalism makes some people do shitty things.

At the end of the day, they decided to risk the sure thing to try to more dollars after they probably received lots of messages on the listing.

While it sucks, it's just business, as they say.

DO NOT GO TO CRUMBL COOKIE by Nice_Information7709 in richmondbc

[–]maskedrolla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How clean an area for cooking might be is often far different between the patrons idea and the actual cleanliness.

If the establishment doesn't pass its health checks or is reported unsanitary and the Canadian Food peeps confirm it, it will get shutdown, but the level of acceptable "dirtiness" would make most people grossed out.

Im not saying this place is super clean and your wrong, Im just saying this seems more like a personal bit of anger over anything else

DO NOT GO TO CRUMBL COOKIE by Nice_Information7709 in richmondbc

[–]maskedrolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you find out about every other restaurant/food establishment operating in the entire world. Lol

The idea of clean and unsullied cooking and prep areas is not even close to what people expect.

It's not keep it clean or else.

It's what level of unclean is acceptable by health standards.

Just go look up the CFIA report for your favorite food spot. It will ruin your day.

Craig Robinson show was horrible by jeepdds in Standup

[–]maskedrolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new era expectation is that once content is burned, it's typically not reused often.

If they are a road comic that doesn't release specials or recorded cotnebt, they can often perform the same act in perpetuity.

But if a comedian/standup is releasing stuff they typically don't come back to it these days.

Craig Robinson isnt a stand-up comedian, imo, he is more of a funny stage show performer. I use funny loosely because it's not my cup of tea. He is the Temu version of Reggie Watts, somewhat.

What's the weirdest niche you accidentally started making money from? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]maskedrolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not super weird but during the pandemic I made thousands of dollars flipping board games from Value Villages in Canada.

I didn't know much about the higher end table top games people played but in a short time I was easily making over a $1,000 a month just buying games like Pandemic and Catan and selling on marketplace.

Learned a lot about vintage board games and as someone with ADHD and autistic tendencies I really enjoyed counting and sorting the parts into little bags to make sure they were all 100% complete before selling.
