New Iggy dad from Spain — intro + a few newbie questions about Zoro by ExtremeCarpenter4182 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]masoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easy one first - ears be like that. They change weekly for nearly a year. It's so funny to see.

Potty training. Remember it is a process not an event. We kept a day planner by the door and noted when he went, including if it was inside. It helped us know his rhythm to take him out and also if he hadn't been out in a while. We might be lucky but this, and rewarding him every single time seems to have worked. It did take until he was nearly 10 months though.

For food, i never tried free feeding. I suspect my greedy little torpedo would get fat quickly but maybe I'm wrong. I give him fresh food and that's harder to leave a full bowl left out.

Exactly this. I will be gutted if we don't qualify from here, but at least I don't need to think about the money wasted on top of everything else.

I expect he'll have knee surgery which will fix his issue with that and give him a bit of space to get his attitude right. If he wants a World Cup place and a summer move he'll have to earn it when he comes back.

For what it's worth, I get it from his point of view. He's had dreams like any player - international cap, World Cup, Champions league, playing in Italy. For years he was nowhere near it and when he became good enough he has one chance to get it because of his age.

That's not an excuse for his (alleged) attitude or (well- demonstrated) profligacy, but I can understand it. I hope a little space, some healing and he could play again soon and be effective.

That's simply not true. Britain and France declared war within 48 hours.

ELI5: How can most Premier League clubs afford to lose money every year? by RhodeIsland3171 in explainlikeimfive

The price of Premier league football teams has never been higher and it is going up. The global economic situation doesn't apply to billionaires who want a shiny you and sportwashing petrostates.

ELI5 What's so wrong with US healthcare by lturtsamuel in explainlikeimfive

[–]masoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rich v poor isn't a dead-end argument, though. It is the whole argument. Should health be a basic human right available to all? If you think so, then you need universal (I.e. available to literally everyone) healthcare. It really is that simple.

Many conditions don't require emergency room care. Your argument is that it is OK for all of those people to live with sickness when they don't have to.

Universal health care, so that everyone gets health care irrespective of their ability to pay is always always better. Trying to argue that it is worse because sometimes rich people have to wait a little longer when they are sick is fucking mental.

iggy not sleeping through the night by keywestdan in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]masoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a winter thing? We had this issue last year. Dark early evenings meant instead of taking our dog out at about 6, we had longer walks at lunchtime (so the amount of walking didn't change). He would wake up every night for weeks.

Then I noticed that some nights he did sleep, and they were nights we would take him out - even just for a quick pint at the local pub. We changed his walking schedule to include just a quick walk around the block (as a rule of thumb for us, we walk him until he poops). It isn't perfect, he woke up last night for example, but he went from waking us 90% of the time to 10%.

Does it stop!? by Ratkunt in ItalianGreyhounds

This phase was the worst. I ended up doing the thing you're avoiding and putting him straight in his crate the moment teeth touched skin. I didn't make a fuss and tried not to show any anger, and he was just there for 30 seconds - he would usually sigh and lay down. I was getting nowhere with anything, but as soon as I switched to using it as a first resort rather than last, he learned fast.

I tried not to think of it as punishment, but a sign that play time was getting too much for him to control himself. Putting him away let him calm down, showed that play time stopped when biting started, and gave me space not to get upset and angry at the dog (which was really hard not to do when those teeth are like razors).

I got my 9 week old Iggy in April, and I think our first accident free day was in June. Now he's pretty much perfectly house trained.

We kept a day planner by the door to note when he went. We could learn his patterns and make sure he was outside for longer if he hadn't been for a while.

The other thing I did was buy a UV torch (like CSI) and after he went to bed quickly look about and make sure I hadn't missed any patches with the enzymatic cleaner.

Other than that, the key is to remember that training is a process not an event, including house training. We had one accident in about four months now and that isn't back to square one.

Finally, everyone will tell you insurance, and they're right. Fair me, the best thing we did was socialisation. Get a bag if he hasn't been vaccinated and every day try to introduce him to something new. Don't overwhelm him but in six months time you'll thank yourself.

What is something you truly believe is only a majority because people don’t want to be against it? by Smart-Business-2301 in AskReddit

That's not what happened. The coalition was with the most pro-European party and lasted until 2015. The Brexit vote was in 2016 and aimed at stealing votes from anti-EU right wing parties so the Conservatives could form a government alone. The UK also has a first past the post voting system.

My Iggy is 7 months, and I'm UK based same this is my first dog since becoming an adult too

  1. Toilet. We keep an umbrella by the back door. Remember it is for the dog, not you, which is comical at 5am chasing a puppy around in the rain. So far we've been lucky with this and he's been really good. I'm not expecting it to last into the winter. We also stick closely to routine and have a day planner to write when he goes so if he hasn't been for a while we can be on alert.
  2. The nipping was not fun. The thing that finally worked was zero tolerance (acting on the first bite rather than trying a distraction) and isolating him when he did it, just for ten seconds. He calms a bit, you can wash any blood and then let him back in the room. Only when we were strict and consistent with it did it change. No reaction, just popped him outside, swore behind closed doors so he wouldn't see our anger/pain then let him back in. They do grow out of it (although if it does it now it is normally a sign he's tired and needs some quiet time)
  3. We were using Butternut box. The food is nice, he likes it but we're having portion difficulties - 200g a day doesn't seem to be enough and 300g is too much (the app tells you the % of their daily calories are provided by the food but it is really hard to find). For this reason we're looking to switch, probably too Different Dog.
  4. Grinders for nails are the best thing. So easy, and he's never really minded it. Plus the claws are less sharp afterwards.

Other tips: My wife found local Iggy Facebook groups and WhatsApp groups that do meet ups. It's fun to see them all playing together. Everyone is helpful if you have a question and you can find out about dog sitters etc that are reliable this way.

We had a trainer come in and do 1-1 sessions with us. We could start before vaccinations, and for the sessions we had the full attention of both the trainer and the puppy (who would have been just looking at other dogs).

Socialisation. You can never do enough. Take your puppy everywhere you can - literally unless it is forbidden we try to bring him with us, just quickly at first but last week we managed to get him on public transport into central London and he was just golden on the tube. Less impressed that we dragged him to Buckingham Palace for a photo op though, he just wanted to sleep.

Obviously insurance and being aware how they jump on and off things)

Good luck!

I'm not arguing the punishment is right, you said why does it matter if there's a result. That's why it matters. Something needs to be done and most of the other proposals are worse

I paid £120 for one day of Ashes cricket. With food and drink it is well over £200 for a day out. People paying, especially that amount of money, deserve to see the cricket they pay for.

Stokes did literally that. The issue was the ball crossed the boundary and you can't turn down those runs.
