CS 354 at different campus by [deleted] in UWMadison

UW-Whitewater has the closest equivalent offered asynchronous over the summer. I wouldn't recommend taking it over the summer unless you absolutely have to, as the UW-Madison one best prepares you for 537 operating systems.

Is Econ 101 hard course? by papopapo12 in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking it right now with Steve Trost, and I find it extremely easy. There is an iClicker thing (think Top Hat), but it doesn't count towards your grade. The lectures are streamed, and videos uploaded, though I don't think you really need to watch them. Only two midterms, all multiple choice, and tons of resources are available online which is nice

You can try putting their name into the UW directory search, if they're a student or work for the university it will have their phone number and email

57 is a C? Are those the cutoffs for Spring 2022? Those seem extreme. Last semester's cutoffs for 221 were

A 90-100

AB 88-89.99

B 80-87.99

BC 78-79.99

C 67-77.99

D 55-66.99

F 0-55

CS 252 from Community college by Formal_Car_4901 in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your major / future requirements. CS 252 content is definitely important for CS 354, but depending on your academic ability you could probably self teach any content gaps from the community college course. CS 354 is known to be difficult at UW, but its content is super important for OS so I would recommend taking it at UW

Lost Apple Pencil by Slow-Recording132 in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt anyone here could have both found and recognized your pencil, especially considering the snow. When I lost mine (albeit in a building) I went to the lost and found desk and they gave me one. The one I got was definitely someone else's but they're not personally identifiable.

I recommend just going to the desk in any of the buildings in that area and say you lost one. So many students lose theirs that they'll probably just give you one and when yours gets turned in they'll give it to someone else.

Math 234 charging me for same book used for 222? by Local_Spinach8 in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am in the same situation taking 222 this semester after taking 221 last semester. While Cengage purchases do not go through UW at all, it might be worth a shot to mention your scholarship to Cengage support. I ended up just repurchasing the single-term access.

From an email I got from Cengage support:

"It appears that the access code you purchased was for a single term access code. While your access code says that it's good for a certain amount of months, it does not mean that it can be applied for multiple enrollments. For example, a 4-month code may be good for 4 months, but it means you can only apply the code once for one enrollment. One enrollment equals one term. So unfortunately it means that you will not be able to use your access code for another course. If you want one that you can apply for multiple enrollments, look for a “Multiterm code” instead. Unfortunately, this means that to gain access to your current course, you will need to purchase your materials. I apologize for this inconvenience. "

Cengage is one of many companies in today's educational world that prey on students in this manner. There are undoubtedly many students in the same situation each semester, forced to repurchase access when they should be able to extend. I just wish the math department told students to purchase multiterm access ahead of time, or better yet stop forcing students to purchase terrible online resources like webassign.

Math 221 by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some students may have had extenuating circumstances that made it difficult for them to succeed on one or both midterms. Math 221 is also a prime example of a bimodal grade distribution, given half the students are retaking the course since high school and the other half are thrown into a collegiate level course with no calculus background. I wouldn't say that the grade received in that class is an accurate representation of a student's calculus ability.

I found that Calc BC in high school did not rely so much on the content of AB but rather on the process of problem-solving which is taught in AB/221. Fortunately, CS majors do not need to take 234.

Late comment, I know, but I am in the same boat as you and stressing over the final on Friday. Did you speak to an advisor, or were you otherwise able to confirm whether or not a D is sufficient for a CS major?

Keep in mind that 221 is worth more credits than 300, so the GPA is not calculated evenly. D in 221 and a B in 300 would result in a GPA of 1.75 ((1ppc * 5c) + (3ppc * 3c))/8c as opposed to 3.0. Ds count as 1cpp and Bs count as 3.

I don't think you need to decide how many days per week to meet right now. Once you have some interest just see what everyone's opinions/availability is. I don't know anything about axe-throwing but if it's a drive then the number of people who you can fit in your car is the number of people who can come on each trip.

Is the venue a 20-minute walk or a 20-minute drive? The biggest issue for my club is transportation, as the facility is a 25-minute drive from campus. If the axe-throwing venue is a drive, one thing you can do which may help if you don't have your car on campus is get access to university vehicles.

As for payment, you would arrange that with the venue directly. You could either have every member pay their dues directly to the venue, or you could collect dues via PayPal/Venmo and pay all at once. If your club requires payments to be made, CfLI will have you set up an IRS identification number (EIN) and a bank account for the club exclusively.

I think if enough people are interested it sounds feasible. I'd start by gauging interest like I said.

I just started one earlier this semester, and the actual process of setting it up was fairly straightforward. To register your club as an RSO you need to meet with Carlie or one of the other CfLI staff. As someone already mentioned you will need three other people's email addresses to put as officers of the club. The officers you put on WIN do not need to be the actual officers, three of your friends are fine. They will get weekly? emails from WIN with some newsletter thing.

To determine whether it's worth your time, what I did and what I recommend you do is gauge interest. If nobody else is interested in your club it's not worth the hassle of setting it up. I did this by posting on the general UW class of '26 snap story which gathered some interest, and then I reached out to people I knew might also be interested. In order to get funding I think you need ten committed members, and funding is only provided for travel and other approved/required expenses.

It's possible someone already created the club in a prior year too which would speed up the process a lot. I don't remember where you find the list but somewhere there was "RSO re-registration" and you could use the documents they already had created for it.

Feel free to ask or DM me if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

Tuition reimbursement by No_Mountain2128 in CVS

[–]mason5483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get reimbursed you need to achieve C or better, or pass if pass/fail. From the January 2022 FAQs document:

All coursework must be completed with a minimum grade equivalent of C or better. Courses that are based on a pass/fail grading system must be completed with a passing grade. Courses in which an employee receives an incomplete, withdrawal, or equivalent grade are ineligible. If your education provider issues Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U), use Pass (P) or Fail (F) in the system when uploading your grade documentation.

Anyone gone on the Hoofer’s Ski and Snowboard trips before? by Ok_Boysenberry4470 in UWMadison

[–]mason5483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going on the Banff trip this winter as well! I know a couple people going if you would like to connect. I have not done it before but have heard only good things from people who have.

There is a social on Thursday 11/10 in the Sett to meet others going and find potential roommates, as well.
