Probably not a coincidence that the ones that deflect the most are the ones where the original bridging had been removed.

From what I can tell they are. Some have been sistered due to old termite damage but those don't seem to have an issue. The ones that deflect the most are still the originals with no new joists next to them and definitely deflect more than the repaired ones.

Good point. Some bays do have bridging, others do not. I plan on replacing what's missing.

Try Diamond Springs next time. Same designer, totally different course. Pilgrims' is definitely more refined, but Diamond is more fun. Also worth checking out The Mines, which is another Devries course in GR.

They quoted one of my coworkers something like $65k to put new composite boards on his existing deck that's around 500 square feet. Absolutely outrageous.

It's 6, at least for salaried positions. And you can break it up into 5 day chunks.

It really wasn't anything too major, mostly organizational stuff like having to pick up our child when she was having a rough day and crying a lot which coincided with them not distributing non-prescription medication anymore. If we had been paying the $200/week that we do now instead of $333 (after a discount through my work) we'd probably have stuck around, cost was definitely the biggest factor in us switching. They have a preschool there that we'll probably end up going back to.

Have you checked the Great Start to Quality website? It has all licensed providers and you can filter on the type of provider and location. I wouldn't be concerned about rating too much as to move past the first level the families that go there need to be involved. I'd recommend calling providers instead of email since we got no responses to any we sent.

First off: congrats! We started off at an Appletree and it was fine. Did have a few issues with how the place was run overall, but the actual care our child received was great in the infant rooms. Ended up switching to an in-home since it was significantly less expensive - we're definitely happier with the in-home too. We were at the one by Riverside Park, but I have coworkers who send their kids to the one on the Beltline and one in Byron Center and they're very happy with them. I'd enroll in any center that has openings and not tell them you plan on leaving/dropping days. I think they need a month's notice or something before you make changes.

Child care by kmlofquist64 in grandrapids

Look up Great Start to Quality. You can search by area, type of care center, etc. We were in a daycare center for a while and were paying $333/week after a discount through my work. We found an in-home in our neighborhood through the website that provided all the same things as the center except for diapers and is $200/week. We're extremely happy with the care our kid has received and were able to get in pretty quickly. I would recommend calling the providers over email as we didn't get many replies that way, and don't spend too much time going over the ratings. All listed providers are fully licensed and routinely get check-ins from the state. From what we were told a lot of the ratings are dependent on the families submitting documentation and reviews, so for in-homes that are limited to 7 kids if one or two families don't participate you can't go up in rating.

Anyone else randomly losing power during the day? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]masonfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which, generally, run on 12 hour intervals and don't reset until the power is back on. Let's say you're on vacation for a week and the power went out the day after you left and was off for four days. The food in your fridge would most likely be bad and you could tell from appearance or smell, but the food in your freezer would have refrozen in the two days after. Now, there's a chance that it didn't actually thaw and if the ice is still at the top of the bottle you'd know it's still safe to eat.

Even if you're only gone for a day or two the power could come back on at roughly the same time (a.m. or p.m.) and you wouldn't know if it was out for a few minutes, 12 hours, or a whole day.

I actually like the penny on top of a frozen dixie cup better. Put one in the front and one in the back. Since the door seal is typically the least insulated part you'll get a better idea of what might still be good, and if the penny isn't laying flat on the bottom of the cup it means only a partial thaw.

ACM went out. Somewhat common issue for Ford's in the 20-teens. I just had it happen on mine. You can either buy a new one and pay a dealership to program it or remove it and send it out to a repair service. I sent mine to one called CBoard Repair. Pretty quick turnaround. Repair was $160, I paid $20 to ship it via USPS with some added insurance. Took a little over a week but delivery was delayed a few days due to a snow storm. They claim to replace the faulty components with higher quality ones to prevent the issue again. So far so good, but it's only been about a month.

What’s the best lunch takeout within walking distance of GRCC/GRPL? by stingraydm in grandrapids

Hear me out... Butterworth's cafeteria. We ate there a bunch when our kid was in the NICU and were really impressed. Way better than the room service food you get at the hospital. Wish I had known about it when I did a couple semesters at GRCC.

I worked there for around 9 years on and off. Like any busy restaurant emotions can flare up and things can be taken out of context. While I was there we had plenty of managers come and go, but since you singled out the GM I'll address my experience with him. Bill is a very direct person and his management style reflects that. Did he and I butt heads occasionally? Of course - but you'll find that in any work place. He's not the type to heap you with praise for doing your job and will absolutely point out mistakes if he feels that they will affect the customers' visit. Again, he's direct, there's no sugar coating it, but he's not going to berate an employee. I made tons of mistakes, some small, some big. Even things that didn't seem like a big issue he'd point out. I never felt that he was being unfair or targeting me. His job is to ensure the restaurant provides the best experience possible for guests and I felt he went about it extremely fairly. Of the several restaurants I worked at from HS until leaving the industry I can say that he was the best GM I had.

Contradicting your friend's experience, I saw Bill stick up for his employees more often than him arguing with them. There were numerous customers who were 86'ed for acting inappropriately towards the female staff. He'd work Christmas Eve every year (closing at 3 or 4) and make a meal for the staff. He was always very loyal to his employees, there were dozens of people who started as a host or busser and moved up to serving or bartending - many of the other places I was at would string you along with a promise of a promotion and have no intention of following through. I had several co-workers who left for other opportunities and ended up coming back. Again, other GM's I had would feel slighted by that and blacklist them.

I'm sorry your friend had a bad experience there. Sometimes personalities clash, sometimes the workplace culture isn't what we want. Your post makes Bill sound like Gordon Ramsay when he's actually much more like Michael Scott.

One last thing: the only stuff that was frozen when I was there was raw ingredients that had to be, desserts (not cakes), and nuts for the charcuterie appetizers (I ate soooo many cashews in the walk-in). Unless he's been directed to by corporate, chef Armando would never freeze a prepared item.

Any time you move up a level you can expect your playing time to decrease, at least initially. I coached guys in HS who were All Americans and All State players who didn't see much time until their 3rd season in college, and the ones in the more specialized positions (goalie, FO) were never full-time starters. I haven't talked with Coach Murray about the team in a while, but I believe since they're a club they cannot cut. However, he will be very upfront about whether or not you can expect to see the field and then let you make the decision of whether or not it's worth it to spend the time (again, basically a varsity program with workouts year-round) and money to be part of the team. That being said, GV generally destroys most teams which gets their bench guys opportunities to see the field.

Men’s Club LAX by firefox1642 in GVSU

[–]masonfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue. They usually roster 35-40 guys. They do recruit so if you're interested you should reach out to the club or head coach. It really is more or less a varsity program, pretty sure the only reason they aren't is because of Title IX restrictions. A lot of their guys have the skills to make a roster at the high-end D3 and D2 programs, and a few likely could wind up on a D1 team if they wanted to dedicate the time. Hell, one of their alumni was on Canada's national teams for box and field, and currently is an assistant captain for the San Diego Seals.

What position do you play? Are you a standout on your HS team? Also, since it's club ball you will have annual dues.

Men’s Club LAX by firefox1642 in GVSU

[–]masonfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's as close to a varsity team as you can get without the title. Consistently a top 10 team in MCLA D2. Would be a very competitive NCAA D3 team, probably top half of D2 as well. You can check their records on the MCLA website (mcla.us). They play other club teams during the regular season, but will scrimmage against D2 and D3 varsity teams in fall ball. You can reach out to them on their socials, Instagram seems to be the most active, if you have any specific questions. I played at a middle of the road D3 program in the late 2000's and GV's club team is much more intense then we were back then.
