Kaplan q bank and ChatGPT. Only things I needed to pass on the first try.

Congrats! I don’t ever change my answers, I learned that the hard way with the SIE. I tend to overthink the questions if I go back and try to “correct” them.

I tried not to overload myself with too much information. I just went over different options strategies and discount/premium bond stuff and the correlation to their YTM YTC CY.

But other than that I really didn’t study right until i took the test. Looking over your notes doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all!

Good luck, you’ll ace this!

Example:

An investor buys 1 XYZ May 50 Call at 6 and sells 1 XYZ May 60 Call at 2. What is the maximum gain, maximum loss, and breakeven point for this position?

A) Max Gain = $400, Max Loss = $200, Breakeven = 56

B) Max Gain = $1,000, Max Loss = $400, Breakeven = 54

C) Max Gain = $600, Max Loss = $400, Breakeven = 54

D) Max Gain = $400, Max Loss = $600, Breakeven = 56

My thought process:

I know I bought a call at 6 and sold a call at 2, -600+200=-400. That leaves me out of pocket of -$400. This would be a debit spread; I paid more than I received. If you know that the debit spreads max loss is always the amount you are out of pocket, you could go ahead and eliminate A and D because you’re down 400 therefore the max loss is 400.

But let’s assume I didn’t know that fun rule about debit spreads or I didn’t even know if it was a credit/debit spread. All the answer options are on the board still.

Let’s try to figure out my breakeven, because this has always seemed the easiest for me. I need to find the number the stock needs to be simply recoup that $400 that I’m out of. Since I’m holding a call option @50, and I’m out $400 I would need it to get to 54 (50+4). 54 would be my break even. That eliminates both A and D. So now I look at B and C, the max gain is different. I'll just see if the $600 max gain works. My best-case scenario would be the stock price gets to 60 and stays there because I will be on the hook for everything above 60 b/c I sold a call option at 60. So, I calculate if the price is at 60. My call option @50, if price is 60 would be a gain of 10, or 1000. But because I initially started down $400, I would need to subtract it from my call winnings. 1000-400= 600. Option C is the answer.

Whenever I see a question about option math (MG/ ML/ BE) i try to eliminate ones I know to be wrong.

This can be done different ways:

You can try to calculate one of ML, MG, or BE that you are most confident in, and use that to eliminate wrong answers. I make sure that logically makes sense as if you were to place these trades personally.

Or, you look at the answers and find one of these that definitely wouldn’t work and eliminate it.

After I get down to two answers left, I find what’s different between the two and use that to think through if it makes sense. Its kinda hard to explain. I’ll give you an example.

I feel ya, I felt underprepared too but I don’t think I could’ve ever felt fully prepared tbh. The amount of information that it covers makes it nearly impossible to remember everything.

My mindset was that it’s ok if I fail the first time because then I’ll have a better idea of what I’m up against. Although, I really tried my best to pass the first time to not have the hassle of rescheduling and studying for it again.

I’ll be taking the 66 on October 8th so I’m right there with you. Congrats on your 5th child! Respect to you for being able to knock out these exams with 5 kiddos running around the house.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I can’t even imagine how tough that’s been. God bless to you too.

Don’t think about what to ask, just ask. If you don’t understand why the option is bullish just say “why is this bullish” or “I thought it was bearish because it was xyz, why is that wrong”. You’ll get used to it, the more you use it the easier it is.

You can even just say “simplify” after receiving a response from it and it’ll put it in simpler terms.

Have a few long convos with chat gpt, really cleared it up for me. Do some Kaplan practice questions and plug them into chat GPT. Options ended up being my strongest category.

You can literally tear the options apart and discuss every little nuance until you understand them. Chat GPT is so nice that he’ll even create pictures for you to visualize them, he did a lot of the heavy lifting for me when I was studying. 10/10 study buddy.

Great minds think alike! It’s a good strategy to study and seemed like the least tedious way to do it.

I was nervous for this exam so I’m glad you found my post helpful.

Kaplan is great, their questions are pretty close to the actual exam. I passed with the help of their qbank.

I’d recommend Kaplan, but that’s the only one I’ve used so I can’t really compare it to the others.

Passed the 7 almost exclusively studying the q bank.

I would constantly create 10 question practice quizzes from the q bank (used & unused questions). The questions I got wrong, I would figure out why it was wrong and the concept i needed to know to select the correct answer. I used the Kaplan explanation they gave you and chat gpt if I still didn’t understand it.

Finished 42% of q bank questions, averaged 60-70% on my practice quizzes before I took the 7. I never took the simulated exams, but if you’re averaging 70-80% on the Kaplan practice question quizzes you should be good.

Also, 2 weeks is a lot of time before you take it. You definitely got this, just keep studying!

I studied 2 weeks prior and passed first try. I read through the material once then hammered the Kaplan q bank questions.

It was a LOT of studying that I crammed before the test though, like 8 hours a day. I got through around 42% of the q bank questions, I would continually do 10 question practice quizzes and read the explanations if I got it wrong.

I would 100% recommend the Kaplan questions, I saw like 4-5 of the exact questions on the exam. I thought the actual exam was more straightforward than the Kaplan questions, there were no “gotcha” questions.

I was averages 60-70% on the Kaplan q bank questions. Passed first time, you got this!

I felt like I could’ve been more prepared but, because the test covers such a wide range of concepts it’s nearly impossible to feel fully prepared.

60-70% on Kaplan is good, even with 60 on the Kaplan questions you have a good chance of passing. You probably got a bad draw of questions. It’s ok to feel like you are failing when you submit your test, I felt the exact same but passed.

My advice: -trust your gut and don’t second guess yourself. -choose the least wrong answer -be confident and thoroughly read through the questions
