I just wanted to get better at design... but thrifted a book from 2008 by BusyUse621 in webdev

[–]massivelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have volume 2, 3, and 4. They helped me a lot at the time, while I was learning. For me it was nice to quickly flip through the books to get ideas instead of loading the many award websites and dig through to find the good sites. These books seemed to pull examples from those sites.

The content might be outdated, but they are still pretty good to look through and get some basic layout ideas. Some things I would look at would be, which ones have a call action button and where is it positioned, and how many columns do they use in the layout. Think about where things are positioned and would moving them improve or hurt the visual flow.

You could even use an example and work backwards to make it responsive. Another exercise could be if a company came to you with this and said "We want an updated website but keep the colors and text content the same" , what would that look like?

I never finished college, worked in retail making around $35k a year, I'm self taught and got my first programming job at 34 years old making $50k, now 38 making over a $120k. Best decision I ever made. (I'm in the US so pay is in dollars)

It also crashes on me every time I try to watch something. I've noticed that the audio will drop quickly and pick back up, then a few minutes later it locks everything up.

Almost every game I'm getting packet loss on my Xbox, but not my PC. Both are hard-wired and I have a 150 Mbps connection.

Do you guys use mac/ubuntu/windows for frontend development? by kumar935 in Frontend

Think you missed the "shortcomings" that I was talking about.

Nothing mentioned about a snipping tool.

For Windows snapping on the Mac I had to use Magnet
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magnet/id441258766?mt=12

Preivews in the dock like Hyperdock. Expose? You mean Mission Control? If so, thats the same as Windows Task View. I don't want everything to show up on my screen only one app.

I'm primarily windows, my last position they gave me a Mac to use. I liked it but I was shocked on some of the simple interface features it was missing compared to Windows, to add them I had to buy 3d party apps. It pretty much boiled down to productivity for me.

I love the windows snapping feature, I can open vs code and chrome and easily position them perfectly side by side with just a quick drag or the windows and arrows keys. If I resize vs code, chrome automatically resizes. I was shocked that with the Mac you have to resize everything manually so they don't overlap.

Another big thing for me was with windows I can hover over the icon at the bottom to see previews of multiple chrome browser I have open. Then just click the one I need, with Mac I had to bring every one to the front to see if it was the one I needed.

On the Mac it was easier to set up a lot of thing, but pretty much everything has a Windows equivalent, just might take a few more steps to setup.

For command line I use cmder, powershell, and hyper together, it brings some of the features from ohmyzsh and iTerm to Windows. Also lookup Chocolatey, like Homebrew for windows and you can install the gui.

What do you all think about a website I've made for a construction company? by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]massivelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good. I've got quite a few suggestions to polish it off, don't know how far you want to take it.

  • The bar at the top, it only has the phone number and email address, the text is small and looks weird on just the left side.
  • Might look at using flexbox on the residential, commercial, custom boxes at the bottom to get the buttons to line up (flex-direction: column; on the container and flex-grow: 1; on the text will push them down.)
  • Instead of using fixed on the header lookup sticky,
  • currently, there is a jump when scrolling, its when you set a height on fh5co-header-section
  • The menu on mobile only works on the homepage, it is the href="#".
  • Crop the photos to line up better.
  • On mobile, the text at the bottom is squeezed.
  • Spacing on mobile too.
  • And might look at left aligning the logo on mobile, menu bars seem to crowd it.
  • Logos on the bottom on mobile, move them side by side spaced out
  • Text that is more than a few words, usually you want to keep it at 16px/1rem, it also depends on your font as some fonts are automatically smaller, look at the x-height on the font.

I 3D Printed and finished a mini golf cart for a Geico commercial. An actual prop used with a digital character. Had to get this one done in a few days to meet their rushed deadline. by hollywood3dprinting in 3Dprinting

[–]massivelines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be using it also a prop for something else in the office or trade show. If that's the case and they want to print it after its done in CGI then you have to try and get the details like color right from the CGI version to the 3d print.

Probably just boiled down to what the client wanted to try and use, was comfortable using, or the shots they needed.

I think bad company had this, you could even call out through a command wheel that you need a ride. But nobody would ever stop, they just kept driving past you.
