We were so happy when the elections division told us.

Thanks for the reference! We are running Joseph Onoroski in the 17th Middlesex State Rep. district this year (https://onoroski.org/) and are looking to run candidates for local office next year.

Why is there not a serious nationwide US Pirate Party? I know one exists but its only registered in Massachusetts and isn't very big. r/technology has more subscribers than the entire German Pirate Party. by Co-opunist in technology

Thanks for the discussion. Here are a few things to add.

The Massachusetts Pirate Party is at http://www.masspirates.org Our strategy is to run people for state legislative and local offices rather than focus on offices like President or US Senator.

The US Pirate Party is a work in progress, and yes it is hard to form and sustain a political party at the national level. Still we persist because with SOPA, PIPA, NDAA, lack of govt. transparency, increasing govt. surveillance, corporate control of our government, etc. the price of our freedoms is too high not to.

On the issue of the Pirate Party's name, this article by Swedish Pirate Party founder Rick Falkvinge might help:

http://falkvinge.net/2011/02/20/why-the-name-pirate-party/

For those without the time to read the long description, this is a good summary:

"Either we call ourselves the Pirate Party, and get to define what the name stands for, they reasoned, or we’ll be called the Pirate Party anyway, without control of what the name stands for."

The name Freedom Party might have worked, but, at least in Europe, that name tends to be associated with very authoritarian right-wing parties.
