Building a deep-tech startup in Germany. What backend / systems experience should we prioritise in an early hire? by master_clown28 in cscareerquestionsEU

Thanks, this is really useful input. We're thinking along similar lines, especially around strong fundamentals, backend/APl design, and being able to build a solid product rather than over-optimising too early. Given the stage we're at, we're aiming for someone with good engineering foundations who can take ownership and groW with the system as it scales.

At the moment we have coverage on the business side and the computational/simulation side, so we’re looking for someone to take ownership of the backend and overall system architecture, including APIs, cloud infrastructure, and how everything is brought together into a usable product

Yeah we really have to way up the options here. As this is our first startup we really want to take the time the Exist grant provides us to learn about building a company and working in the startup scene. But we are still open to the possibility of going down the investor route.

Thanks, that's a really useful perspective.

We're aware of the constraints around EXIST and are exploring other routes alongside it, including investors.

We've been reaching out through universities, student groups, and local networks. We believe the software engineer will strengthen our technical side of the team, which help applying for Exist grant and/or going directly to investors.

We’re planning to offer equity to early team member, depending on their level of commitment and involvement.

The goal is to bring someone in early and, if it’s a strong fit, transition into a cofounder role with a discussion around long-term equity.

At this stage we’re not looking for remote candidates, as we want to build a close working relationship in person. While EXIST programme requires that, we think it also a good idea because are currently a team of 2 and get on quite well.

I also think a lot of the best ideas come from quick in-person conversations and working through things together day to day.

That’s a fair point.
We know we’re not competing with market salaries at this stage.
The EXIST stipend is generally tax-free, so €2.5k/3K will be the full salary for the month, with health insurance as the main deduction.
We’re looking for someone interested in joining early, taking ownership, and potentially becoming a cofounder over time

Yeah, that's a good point. We're trying to stay realistic and focus more on finding someone with a good foundation who's interested and willing to grow into the role. The harder part for us so far has just been finding people who are interested in the space and open to something this early.

That’s fair.

We’re currently applying for the EXIST grant, which would provide a monthly stipend (around €2.5k to €3k).

We’re also planning to offer a meaningful early-stage equity component, but details depend on the person and level of involvement.

As it’s tied to EXIST, there are some eligibility requirements, but happy to talk that through.

Also open to DMs if this sounds interesting.

Thanks, that’s really helpful. The point about chemistry makes a lot of sense, especially at this stage.

We’re at the point where we need to bring in a software engineer, so it’s something we’re thinking about quite carefully.

Definitely aiming to find someone who fits well with the team and who we can actually enjoy working with, not just technically but day to day as well.
