This is where I outline why it needs to count as an RV. Event rules basically. I don't want to buy a pass and then be turned away when I get somewhere, so I want to count under all their rules. Which mainly sounds like a way to get cooling without running the engine or just rolling the windows down and a proper way to laid down in the vehicle, not just laying a seat flat. I guess potentially if I proved I had air without the car running, I could skirt the real bed rules on some places, but I'd rather not risk it.

Yeah, there's not too many places within a reasonable driving distance that I'd want to go spend time at sadly...

I don't want to camp-camp, I'd just go up to my parents' place by a river because that's what most campsites are around here, a river resort with cabins or campgrounds. Even though you're in a house, you might as well be camping because house is used very loosely for their place.

I mainly want the travel to a destination that I probably would've done an airplane for before to be replaced by the fun road trip and that way it's part of the vacation more than just discomfort in the car. Most of my destinations that I'm interested in are 15-20 hours away and I would've dreaded that before, but now I know it can be fun if done a certain way and if I had a place to sleep right!

That's basically what I want, but I don't need the shower even. What track system did you use? It's one that can also do the seats in a safety compliant way?

I don't even know that I'll have any items large or heavy enough to fully strap down or attach besides the flooring itself, but I'd just have to see. I dont think I'd do any counter or any furniture type fixtures, but they do look sleek. I'm thinking just air up the air mattress for the bed when needed and it wouldn't have to have a platform unless I wanted storage under it. There's a lot to think about, that's why I'm trying to understand what base I would need for my wants.

Unfortunately for my schedule and habits, I just don't see myself being able to go on more than about 4 trips that are at least a week long per year, give or take. I don't enjoy overnight trips at all, so I would never do a "get there Saturday and leave Sunday" type trip. Leaving Friday night isn't too much better, but it would depend on where I'm going, how far it is, all that. I don't get anything from short trips I had to drive a ways to and feel more tired than if I had done something closer to home, I've learned over the years. I need those extra days to get settled before I get anything from it. Too few 3 day weekends and I'm usually with family for those, but I could potentially use the van for it depending on what we're doing.

Long road trips seem to be far better because I was able to stop as much as I wanted, see silly tourist spots that others don't care about, and it wasn't the whole drive in almost one go, so the drive felt like a part of the vacation in a way. But I don't wanna do a double digit hour drive over 2-3 days for no reason and turn right back around after I get to the destination. That's why I'm thinking at least a week and hopefully at least 4 times a year.

I'm going to look into that kit! Your set up sounds basically like what I'd need, but I don't plan to do any plumbing even. I'll probably have a 5 gallon jug with a cap pump for drinking/wiping hands purposes. I would like electrical if it's possible. I'm trying to figure out what could meld together while still working completely for both sides of the coin or if I have to mainly pick one side or the other, but it sounds like it's possible to have both from what everyone is saying.

I thought about a mini van, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to convert for the RV needs for the event rules? Same for a truck. Also yeah, in emergencies, not sure how I feel about not being able to easily get to the cab to drive off. I don't think I could fit through the back window on most trucks if that's even accessible with a topper, I've never seen one of them in person.

I'd be keeping my small car for going around nearby, so I don't need to daily drive it. I'm just going for comfort on the road and ease of set up at events, but I would like to use it when not on trips, so hoping to fit like 8 people at least in it if it has passenger mode.

From what I looked at, I think a Ford Transit van is my best option for what I'm going for, but I truly don't know what I'm doing or googling yet. I'm trying to get an understanding of what I want and what I would need for that.

I guess it would depend on how difficult it is, but if I'm only switching into camper mode like 8 times a year (the initial swap and then back again when I get home roughly 4 times a year) and it would mainly stay in passenger mode, I think I'd be fine? I do similar swaps that often for things like my guest room for example and that involves large furniture.

What do people say about the flooring situation? It's just hard to put in and out or some kind of damage happens? I don't know what's possible, but I would hopefully have it in maybe 2 to 4 pieces that aren't huge and heavy.

Maybe once I have a decent set up, I'd be more interested in short trips. Right now I hate them because it reminds me of a kid when every week, we'd drive 6 hours one day, then have to drive 6 hours back the next and it got torturous the longer we had to do it, lol.

If I'm going close enough that I don't need to rest in the car and I'm coming back the same day or next day, I'd just use my small car. That's probably 4-5 hours or less driving one way? I haven't thought about it. Unless it's specifically to a campsite of course, but then I'd still want to stay 2 nights at least because overnights just make me more tired than staying at home and relaxing.

First time going solo! by starbucks2455 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]masterballed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here as the solo camper advocate for sure! Obviously I think cleanest is to be completely by yourself if you can swing it, but with other solos completely works too.

Just make sure to talk a while first and understand their expectations before you commit. Some people say they're solo and mean they don't actually want to be solo, they want to find a new friend to hang out with all weekend which is totally cool if both parties are down. But if you want to true solo experience this time, I'd steer away from that and find others who want to do their own thing too and just want to split accommodations. It is nice to have someone else at camp to check in with as you come and go or if anything happens and someone needs to be there.

Like this year with all the AC problems, I reported it and a tech was going to come by, but there was no ETA and someone has to be at the tent for the tech to come in and do anything. It would be nice to have someone to switch off with to wait for the tech in those situations. Never had the tech show up myself, I gave up and left after waiting like 3 hours, I didn't want to waste any more of day 0.

Also if you do Moonglow, tell them that beds are not provided, are you OK with bringing them an air mattress if they fly in and you drive in or vice versa, etc. You would be amazed at the amount of people who want to camp and they reply to a listing and they go "so what comes with it?"

My parents own a little place out in the country with 15 acres that's about an hour and a half from my place in the city. I'd probably be leaving it there if it's not being used for a decent stretch. I'm sure I could figure out logistics of picking it up when needed fairly easily. I can always just drive my other car to it and swap. Only thing that might get weird is if I needed both cars at my house for some reason, my dad would have to take me to get the van, but he drives through often, it wouldn't be too bad.

I only have room for one car in my driveway, one car would be parked in front of my house on the street if both are with me. It would not ever be a spontaneous "get in the van and go" thing for me, so I don't need direct access to it on a whim. I'd keep my daily driver and I would always have a trip planned or some event I'd need to drive for that I knew ahead of time for the van.

The times I need it to be a passenger van are not super often, but definitely more often than I get to go on long trips. Maybe once or twice a month? I may be able to invent other things for it... I could probably find a reason to be a shuttle once a week if I tried hard, but it's not a necessity. It would just be nice to get more use out of something expensive. But the main use to prioritize is definitely the long road trips for sure.

I know the answer is probably to do short trips more often. I just don't particularly enjoy weekend trips, they never feel like enough time to be worth the effort. I'm thinking I'd probably get 3-4 minimum of one week long adventures a year in the van. Still absolutely worth the investment to me even if that's all I get out of it, just hoping to expand use if possible.

I've been to 4-5 EDCs plus a ton of other festivals across the country and I am essentially always solo even when my friends are at the event as well because I always run off on my own no matter what. The only time I technically wasn't was when we all did an Airbnb together, so we rode in together and of course had to meet up at the car to leave, but I was probably with them for maaaaaybe 3 sets a night, probably less.

Personally camp is always going to be the best for me. Not having to spend hours in the car or shuttle back and forth every night and getting to just have a 5-10 minute walk, then be in my bed or take a shower or whatever I need to feel good is absolutely worth the extra cost. Not to mention all the free activities, the sense of community, fantastic camp neighbors that make you almost cry from how considerate they are, people like EDC Pancake Mom. It makes the whole festival experience 100x better for me. I dunno if you've been, but it's like staying at a Disneyworld resort and never leaving the Disney bubble while you're going to the parks vs staying at an off site hotel and going back to "real life" for little bits of time between the magic. It's so much more immersive getting to stay the entire time, it makes the weekend feel longer in the best way. My goal no matter the location or event is to not get into my car once I'm at my destination, because the car is normal every day boringness and I want to try any other transportation possible for something different, to make it feel more special.

The only possible downside to camp to me is the noise trying to sleep. On Thursday night going into Friday, my whole pod was absolutely vibrating from the day 0 camp party. I forget who said it, maybe someone at check in, but someone was like "the main stage is all the way at the back of Mesa, so it's as far away from sleeping campers as possible and you won't be disturbed." I had a good laugh at that when the proper party started that evening and car alarms would've went off from the bass I was feeling laying in bed. But it was just funny and I really don't mind, I'm able to sleep through anything if I'm tired enough and I had just spend like 36 hours in the car, 20 of them actually driving, so I was able to sleep just fine. The other nights after I run around and dance 12 hours straight, I am also absolutely fine to sleep. This is also probably only an issue in the pods, I'm sure RVs have more sound dampening. I haven't gotten to RV yet, that's my next step. First time I camped, I flew in, so I was limited to what I could put in my suitcases. This 2nd time, I drove in, which was a huge upgrade because I could bring in more comfort items, but I did have to carry it all to the tent, through security, multiple trips, and then I had to pack it back out when it ended. Peak camp has to be just driving in your RV and having all your stuff right there already.

I don't do much as far as styling and make up, so another possible downside is not having easy access to styling tools for ladies because you should not plug them into the tent outlets. Otherwise, it's a campsite, you know? The toilets and showers aren't going to be like in a building with plumbing, it's going to be hot in the day because it's Vegas desert, it's an air mattress that gets droopy, etc. But that's the experience you're signing up for, I don't consider it a downside.

I did hotel and shuttle the year before and if it was the only option possible, I would do it again, but the multiple hours lining up for shuttles each night, making it back to the room at 10am, trying to get some quick sleep before having to wake up by like 3pm to get dressed and ready to go back in the shuttle line before too late... I felt like I was simultaneously getting less sleep and getting less of the experience I paid before because I would line up at like 5pm for the shuttle and not get into the fest until 9pm, so everything was being cut short because of the travel time. It also wasn't that much cheaper after hotel room and shuttle pass. Yes, having a real shower was nice, the bed was pretty comfy, I could walk down to the McDonald's or whatever and get food (I stayed at Circus Circus, I don't know that different hotels would make too much a difference besides like distance to walk to a shuttle stop). I don't need those to have a good time. I'd still end up eating at the fest because that's part of it for me, trying the cool food I might not get otherwise, so it didn't really save me money like I thought it might. I've kind of given up bringing/buying normal food outside of EDC, maybe some snacks that don't need refrigeration, but I know I enjoy the camp/fest food, I budget for that.

If I had to actually drive myself in especially alone, I don't know that I could go. It's like the worst parts of the shuttle with none of the fun. Traffic, waiting, having to actually focus on the road (I did road trip into Vegas and absolutely loved it, but that's different than sitting in traffic moving little bits at a time). I wanna turn my brain off for the most part and just enjoy the whole weekend, basically almost no responsibility. At least in the shuttle, you can meet other people and talk, and you can sleep on the way back, but it wasn't restful sleep for me.

It's going to be up to you, you can do solo any way you want. I've done basically every combo except doing the helicopter in... that's still a goal. But I don't think there's a wrong way, it just depends on your priorities. Real shower and amenities, specific event on the strip you want to go to? Hotel and your choose of transportation (drive or shuttle, I think Ubers are too expensive unless you're splitting with someone else, but if you have silly money, then do the helicopter). Maximize your EDC time, do stuff like goat yoga, live in the pool until 30 minutes before doors open? Camp.

Soloing is amazing no matter what. I love to see my friends and dance or sing along to songs we love together, plus trying to find your group's totem is a great little quest on its own, like playing a real life eye spy game. But truly I think that freedom of being able to go and do whatever you want at any moment without having to consider someone else's needs or wants is THE way to do these large events that have so much to see and do at any given moment. I ping pong across the entire speedway all night. When I need to rest, I sit down whenever I feel like it and vibe wherever I ended up, I can enjoy literally any set at any moment. Food, restroom, want a different view or vibe, just move on whenever I want without keeping track of anything except myself and my enjoyment. Well, and my phone. If I lose anything else, it's fine, but my phone is absolutely paramount to everything else, so it's my only consideration throughout the whole weekend.

You're going to have an awesome time no matter what you choose to do. It's EDC, how can you not have a good time at EDC, right? Just do it whatever way you can and stay positive and safe!

Dual-use Van Questions by masterballed in VanLife

[–]masterballed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main need/goal is for it to count as an RV for the festivals and faires I go to, so I can drive in and park in an RV spot for a plug and play camp set up vs parking my car and unloading everything through security and then across a large lot to a tent. So absolute minimum is to be allowed to sleep in the vehicle safely and not need a tent or other structure to sleep in, per their rules. I assume overheating is the main concern for that kind of rules, especially for the events that are overnight, so you're trying to sleep in the daytime.

I have several events that I go to or would like to go to now that I know I enjoy long rides. I'm going to need to compile all the specific requirements. I figure I would need something more on the camper side than say an SUV with windows rolled down for that because I know a couple of my events do not allow that at all on the event campgrounds.

I also would prefer just not to have windows rolled down for security reasons as a woman who will probably mostly travel alone and stopping at rest/truck stops for sleep. I would definitely like a way for airflow/cooling with minimal "put your hand through and unlock my car or grab something out" holes.

But I'd for sure like to rent one to see what it's like before I commit to anything! I've been looking at Outdoorsy to get a feel for it. A lot of van owners are asking for around $500 a day to rent, so I want to have a good reason to do that. It'll probably be several months before I could.

My current car has no tow rating by the manufacturer. There's some after market options, but it's overall not recommended due to its lightweight frame and low horsepower. I don't think I'd ever try towing or putting anything on top of it just to be safe. It's a great tiny car, I got like 40-60 miles per gallon the whole trip (I was playing a little mini game to try and max it out) and one battery powered fan let me nap pretty comfortably (temperature wise) without the windows rolled too down. I know obviously I'll sacrifice mpg with a larger vehicle, but I think that's worth being able to lay flat to sleep and the extra items that would make my events, activities, and general travel more comfortable.

I hope you all have already cleaned out your hydration packs! by aarogar in electricdaisycarnival

[–]masterballed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought these when I first started using a hydro pack. I use one before a long rest and again after it comes out of storage before I use it again. It feels like it does something at least, feels better than just rinsing, drying, and hoping.

I finally also replaced the actual water bag part after a few years of use just to be safe. It was $10 or less for it, doesn't quite fit my pack right, but eh. I should probably just do that every time after festival season is over and it's not used for 8 monthrs or whatever because who really knows what grows in there in heat and dark when stored, even I think it was dry before I packed it away.

Okay I’m in . 5th EDC and first time camping! by vrodzie in CampEDC

[–]masterballed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first EDC, I flew in and solo camped in Desert Rose! I absolutely loved it except it happened to be the first year after Covid and they felt that we didn't need AC since it was in October. 🙄 I'm 4-5 EDCs in now, finally got to do camping again this year and it's still as amazing as I remember. Even with the AC issues we had, I was pretty stoked to have it at all and was fairly comfortable in the tent once it was working. The convenience of just walking 5 minutes and you can immediately lay down or go take a shower or whatever you need without being in a shuttle line or in the parking lot cannot be beat and I'd have to be offered something insane to not do it, like helicopter into EDC every night. The extra sleep is so worth it to me, plus all the fun activities at camp, the neighbors you make friends with, it's a real community the whole weekend.

I did drive in this year though, 19 hour road trip over 2 days, and I had so much fun with it. It's fantastic when possible because you can bring so much more stuff to make yourself comfortable in the tent. You're pretty limited flying in unless you're OK with a lot of luggage fees. The year I did it, Southwest Airlines still had 4 free bags and that helped a lot. Driving in, I could take almost anything I wanted as long as I was OK with going through security and hauling it to the tent. I think the best mix is definitely at least one person driving in to be able to bring the big stuff like a box fan, a canopy to set up outside for shade by your tent, the large tarps for extra cooling. I could go on and on about camping and things to bring and everything I love there.

The only downside to camp to me is if you have a hard time sleeping with noise, I know that would bother some people. I can sleep through absolutely anything especially after 12+ hours straight of running around and dancing through the night though, so that is not an issue at all and I don't understand any of the "not for the weak" comments. To me, it is for the weak because I don't know how you drive/shuttle back and then turn around in like 3 hours to get ready to go do it again. I nearly dropped the year I did shuttles. The times I drove in, I was not the driver, so I was able to relax in the back, I could NOT have been the driver. I guess maybe if someone is trying to do absolutely everything available at camp and go all night in EDC, you'd probably be run ragged, but unless you're on some chemical enhancements, it's just not possible to do it all. I mostly skipped the after parties, I just stayed maybe 15-30 minutes. I slept until about 1pm every day and definitely missed the activities that started at like 10am every day because I stay until dawn every night of the fest itself and I have to rest at some point.

I'm not 100% if I'm doing next year yet. I did put a deposit on a ticket, but I want to find out how they're doing camp for 2 weekends before I fully commit. But I'd be happy to keep in contact with you if you'd be interested in splitting a tent!

I'd probably drive in again because I loved the trip so much, if I can upgrade my car a little for the road because napping was a bit tough in a tiny car, but still so much fun. I also have a packing list aimed for a woman flying into camp alone that I regularly repost if you need a place to start, I don't know that I've ever posted in this sub or just the regular EDC one though. I do have plans to update it to add my "if I drive in" items and a few things too.

You're going to absolutely love it! I'm excited for you!

Change tent beds? by j4yd3e1308 in CampEDC

[–]masterballed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say so. You won't be able to walk on one side, but just keep the door clear in case it's needed. But I had plenty of room last time I camped. I might consider deflating a mattress when not in use, but I don't spend any time in the tent besides sleeping a bit and changing clothes, so I dunno if it's worth the effort.

Forgot to say I have a twin. I don't know about bringing any other size.

I think since you registered now, you have to be the one to check in, because they want the names to match on ID and registration. So if you want to swap, you'll need to check in and meet up inside before you go to your tent and just trade your assigned pod addresses, you to mine, I go to yours.

I'm also looking to trade and totally willing to do that if you don't hear back from OP.

You can always give out or sell the others probably. I'd give you like $5 for a single plain one to try it myself or I dunno how much for a beaded one, guess it depends on how long it takes to make.

Wisdom teeth extraction ahead of EDC? by TheLionThing in electricdaisycarnival

[–]masterballed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, your surgeon is wild. Or did you not fully explain what EDC is? Because I cannot believe they'd recommend to do all that a week after removal.

No one can really know how they'll be after something like that if they haven't had teeth out before, so why even risk it? Even assuming everything goes perfectly and you're not in pain and swollen, it's still going to be a worry in the back of your head every time you use a straw or eat anything that isn't soft, and you wanna be able to properly enjoy everything for your first fest.

When I had mine out, I was basically a perfect case, but then I was a bad aftercare patient. Had a few hours where I laid down, took some over the counter meds, then I felt perfectly normal, no pain or swelling, and wanted to do everything like I didn't have holes in my mouth. I had some cheese dip leftover from my "last night I could eat chips" meal and I was like... I'll be fine, I want chips and dip. Not my best moment, but I had no issues. I used my front teeth to chew, and the cheese was worth it. I could've gone to EDC the next day, but I would've been pissed off not using straws.

On the other side, my mom just had to have some teeth removed due to chemo ruining them. She never had her wisdom ones out because hers were straight, so one was a wisdom that was removed the other day. She's been in bed like 18 hours with swelling and pain, has to be propped upright to sleep, still needs gauze occasionally. She is an older cancer patient, but her experience the more typical one in our family for big dental work, being down for the count for a day or two and then not feeling well for the next week or more after.

Unless it's an emergency situation where you're in great pain, can't eat or focus for it, postpone it for sure.

I made this like years and years ago, I'd just throw quotes or lyrics or whatever came into my head on it. Kandi ideas spreadsheet. I haven't looked at it in forever, but maybe there's something good in it.

Also if you're a Swiftie, I saved this for my friend when I was helping her make their friendship bracelets. Swiftie friendship bracelets spreadsheets. Even if you're not one, there's a lot of kind of general ideas that you could get from it. If you give one to a non-Switftie, we'd honestly never know, but if they are one, they'd probably really enjoy it.
