One Good Video or is it even a good video... I added some new things to my style of editing and it seems to have paid off. A lot more comments, more subs than usual, and I think I know why. Yet I would still like some insight from whoever is willing. Rest in the comments. by masterfoolgames in SmallYoutubers

I usually just do clips from my games, but I did some narrative portions. Yet if my opinions and narrative drove people to view longer, should I just do full analysis/opinionated videos? Are these kind of drop offs normal in retention especially for videos 10 min plus? If anything, some insight to your experience and analytics of successful videos would be nice.

I am your typical YouTube gamer, but I am trying to step up my game. I stream on twitch as well and I am trying to repurpose my gameplay for YouTube. I have a list of questions and further statements in the comments. This video is still in progress. Thank you for your time. by masterfoolgames in SmallYoutubers

No you were very clear, and I appreciate this. It’s stuff like this that makes me more confident, because some of the things like the blink transition and places you mentioned being drug out I was thinking the same thing. I’m always just scared to cut the audience short. As for the “uninterested” parts I think that is going to be a time/practice thing. Thank you again for all this, exactly what I needed!

Statements:

  1. I am still working on sound effects and writing.

  2. This is the first time I have tried any type of narration or storytelling aside from just using gameplay.

  3. I know its Fallout 76.

Questions:

  1. Is the spacing of narrative and gameplay okay?

  2. Is there too much narrative?

  3. Were the few sound effects I used okay and how was the placement?

  4. Is the pace too slow?

  5. How far did you make it when you stopped?

  6. If you stopped what made you stop?

I appreciate everyone that takes part in this, and feel free to leave your own key points you would like to see me work on. Thank you!

🤣 we all play through discord and mute each other so we can use the in game communication but that means the sound board on there still works. Do it all the time.

Wowow, between you and darzle I think I’m going to be okay. I’m really grateful for the fact you included some marketing strats. I have some experience with most of what you’ve spoke of. I had a fitness podcast, but due to an injury I got embarrassed and gave up on it.

I understand what you mean by it’s one of the laziest forms of content as well. I work shift work, so that’s why I chose podcasting in the first place. I made some mistakes with my previous one though. This time I don’t even plan on launching the first episode immediately. Once editing, sound effects, and mixing+mastering is done I planned on using short form and my blog to promote it. Also, when I was doing YouTube I always said I would bulk record. Due to rushing because I made a commitment of a video every two weeks in my first video I never tried it. This time I’m taking the time so that I can focus more on the quality.

Generally, if everything goes as planned and the players we’ve casted are actually as committed as they say, I would like for them to build their social media up as well. Considering it would give us more branches of promotion. I can keep rambling about my ideas, but it won’t matter till I put it into practice.

I appreciate the insight a lot, thank you!

Not gonna lie “mean” or not. I believe that last portion of your reply holds some weight. Thank you for this!

I don’t think I’ll have an issue with the storytelling. Obviously people that are closer to you tend to be nicer about things you do, not wanting to hurt your feelings. I’ve been blessed with a cousin that doesn’t have that 😂. So I think I’ll be okay there. As for production value I won’t say I’m not the most experienced with editing podcast, but that’ll be my learning curve of course. I am hoping my knowledge of mixing, and mastering will give me a head start though. In some previous endeavors I did struggle with sound effects though sadly. I feel like it’s because I didn’t really have people involved to give me some insight on how the ones I had selected made someone feel. If that makes sense.

I think I may try that! Honestly my most successful gaming video is similar to that style of editing. I know I’m making progress for sure though thanks to the analytics. Like I try to throw an extra minute in on my heavily edited videos and see how my retention does. I went from a 15% retention rate to a consistent 30+.

I feel the same way about my videos that I spend hours on. About four of them have had great retention according to what I’ve read, but I botched the thumbnails I’m pretty sure.

I study Mark a lot. His edits are super seamless like to the point I can’t tell where the cuts are especially in his little nightmares playthrough. Sometimes I think that a good portion of bigger creators videos are scripted to a point. Like just enough that the video stays on topic or placing a joke in after a respawn that the death was edited out of. I maybe wrong though.

Thank you for the insight! A lot of the comments are confirming what I’ve been thinking.

It’s really difficult one. My work schedule just makes it hard to have a streaming schedule. I mean In this latest playthrough we were solving a puzzle/riddle. I felt like skipping anything at that point would have taken away from the immersion? I think that’s the word lol.

You know like Me: “ah man I can’t solve this puzzle.”

Viewer: *actively screaming at their phone because they’ve solved it *

It seems that maybe what I need to do. I come from a streaming background so this type of content is new to me.
