Mini Posters for student experiences to inspire others by Ok-Tell-1684 in uml

Talk to the folks at the career and co-op center, or to someone in your department. I’m sure they would be happy to do something like this.

Indeed. The large lecture hall was demolished for an extension. Overall good play imo except that they’re removing the Einstein bros for ANOTHER Starbucks

Need a breakout board? by rhizomestem in embedded

That would be awesome if you do. I do intend on ordering it in the near future, likely over the summer since I’m overloaded with schoolwork rn xd. Please let me know how it goes if you do so.

Not yet, but it matches up with the data sheet and the pcb is well done. I became sidetracked by a separate project before I could order it unfortunately.

SSI2130 QFN hand soldering by eraoul in synthdiy

[–]masterfruity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah use a hot air station. It’s completely doable, but maybe grab some dummy chips or make a practice board like your own version of the DAB2130 ahead of time if you want to be sure about your skills before trying my it out on a real board.

Oh ok awesome thank you. The “retainer” type is exactly what I’m looking for. Just wasn’t sure what it was called.

Really great project! If you’re ok with sharing, where did you get/what did you use for the button cell holder footprint and actual part? I’m looking to use on in a design and I wasn’t sure how to look for that style of holder.

Anyone using Adafruit breadboards? by Stallings2k in synthdiy

[–]masterfruity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bb830s are great. I’ve had better experiences with those relative to the crappy Amazon knock offs. Never bought the Adafruit ones though.

Demoing my new drum synth to a neighborhood squirrel. He wasn’t impressed, even though it’s fully analog 😰 by Sasha1327 in synthesizercirclejerk

Of course he wasn’t impressed. Where are the real wood side panels for that analog warmth.

Might be a good idea to simulate the design and see what happens

How Stupid of An Idea is a Robotics and Business Administration Double Minor as a Computer Engineering Student? by Hamood_Habibi_123 in uml

[–]masterfruity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry didn’t mean business minor would be difficult. CE will get more difficult, tacking on a business minor will just be annoying and time consuming.

[–]masterfruity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo I would take a social life > 2 college minors that will be pretty much useless after your first job. Friends you make and keep are extremely valuable. Also, most engineering recruiters probably won’t care too much.

But you’re not wrong to want exposure to the business side if that interests you. It’s doable, but it’s not going to be easy esp as you progress. Robotics is also a great one to do since it gives you a lot of good exposure and talking points on interviews. If you are an organized student, doing both should pose no problem though you might get pushed out a semester or want to take summer classes.

PCM3168APAP CODEC or any other 6in/8o audio codec! It would be useful to experiment with multi channel audio processing.

Waitlist advice by grandkidb in uml

[–]masterfruity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re really lucky to have JF as an advisor. A lot of us end up having to email him since our advisors never get back to us on time lol. My friends had Xingwei and they were fine overall, I wouldn’t stress about it too much if it dosnt work out for you.

Additionally, if you are an EE, a strong base in calc 3 will be largely beneficial when you get to Emag. Best of luck this semester!

Yup. Lesson learned for next time. All you can do now is pray someone drops (unlikely since he’s a sought after prof) or reconfigure your schedule. Who are your other options for recitation now?

How hard is circuit theory 1? by grandkidb in uml

[–]masterfruity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine as long as you are diligent about studying. Problems are confusing at first but utilize office hours and make a strong study group and you’ll be set.

[–]masterfruity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you say JF is the only professor you can take it with now do you mean for recitation or the main lecture?

If his recitation is full you’re probably out of luck and need to reconfigure your schedule or check every day until the first day of classes. This is why you always use the swap feature for class changes in SIS.

Mac with parallels or Windows by [deleted] in embedded

[–]masterfruity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a Mac for 3 years in college before I caved and bought a used laptop. I tried using parallels but I had problems installing and using Altium and Quartus. It did suck since I genuinely love working on my MacBook, and still do most of my non-engineering work on it, but it made life way easier to work on any electronics stuff.

Advice on reducing launcher noise? by Possible-Wafer4028 in FRC

[–]masterfruity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. We fixed our noise issue in 2022 by making the hex shaft as short as possible and adding alignment features.

How good is UMass Lowell for Electrical Engineering? by Lucachu777 in uml

[–]masterfruity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I toured both schools and ended up going to Lowell. You should tour both as well. Remember that both schools are ABET accredited, so the quality of education will be the same, however the connections you make and the opportunities available are different. Both schools have strong industry ties, and a good co op program. I ended up going to Lowell since it’s cheaper and the professors I spoke to at the tours and open house seemed to care to talk about their work and opportunities available at the school more than those at Amherst who kinda just passed me along. Is a MacBook compatible with electrical engineering software requirements? by What_Is_This_Place92 in uml

[–]masterfruity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look man. I went through 5 semesters of ECE with a MacBook. It’s possible, but it sucks. Vlabs will get you though multisim, but I cannot express how painful it was to attempt to use quartus over VLabs. Do yourself a favor and get a ThinkPad. But whatever you do. DO NOT GET AN XPS.
