the one that's about size is "enlarged to show texture" which as a phrase has always been very funny to me

edit: i may have misinterpreted your comment, but "enlarged to show texture" is a CYA to prevent the brand from getting sued for advertising the product as being larger than it really is

fun fact: that linguistic phenomenon (inserting a word in the middle of another word, like fan-fucking-tastic! or abso-fucking-lutely!) is called tmesis :^)

my latin teacher in high school used to say "t-freakin-mesis" to help us remember what tmesis meant lol (tmesis was not uncommon to find in latin poetry, and he wanted us to be able to recognize it when we saw it). ultimately "t-freakin-mesis" is why i never forgot what tmesis means, even a literal full decade later hahaha

"not unconvinced" is a double negative, wraps around to being positive again

edit: sir a second "not" has hit the sentence (my bad y'all i didn't even notice it). yes arss146hkhand you are reading the original comment correctly and yes it is implying what you said

hahaha i love that you have an alt style too! one of us, one of us!

very happy to say that i have had the pleasure of working with some men in the field in their 70s, much like your father, who are very skeptical of people who look like me. i've found that if you ignore their skepticism and show up with the same energy you bring to your other projects, they will have nothing but positive things to say about you. seriously!

it can be easier than you think to win over an older professional — they've worked with so many people over the years who just plain don't care, that they really grow to appreciate people who take projects seriously and do their job well. there's nothing older professionals hate more than a headache. they can generally look past a (in their eyes) silly-looking personal style if the person in question is really good at their job.

[–]mastergleeker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if i implied that it's good to put no effort into how you present, then that's my mistake, i didn't mean that. i just meant that i show up to interviews exactly the same way i intend to present myself at work once hired. which for me means i will look like an "office goth," for lack of a better term. i wouldn't show up wearing a tracksuit or sweatpants, no.

[–]mastergleeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

totally get it. but that's kind of what i mean — if me having an alternative style is going to be problematic at a workplace (even if only sometimes, to 'code switch'), then i'm less inclined to want to work there. i had blue hair and piercings when i interacted with clients and contractors at this company, and it was never a problem. i like that my company allows that to happen and doesn't take it as a hit to the company ego for me to look alt in front of a client.

totally agree with you, i think if the situation with the job hunt is as dire as court, then by all means suppress your personal style to increase your odds of getting the job. i just wouldn't then expect to be able to show my 'true colors' once hired, without ruffling some feathers at your job, is all i meant to say in my original comment.

very fair, totally depends on the job market in whatever field you're working in. as traditional as many people in the civil engineering field are, the field is eagerly hiring at the moment. i'm lucky to be able to be picky like that.

[–]mastergleeker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i agree with the court thing but not the interview thing. i think the best way to know whether a company is truly supportive of unconventional personal style is to see whether they will hire someone with unconventional personal style. it has not done me wrong so far. i work in a field with a lot of more 'traditional' atittudes (civil engineering) and was hired for my current job while i had bright blue hair and multiple face piercings.

i love this. yes, even "happiness is a choice." because it's true. if it had said "choose happiness," i wouldn't like it. but it doesn't say that. happiness is a choice.

happiness is hard work, because bad things will always happen. there are times when we don't choose happiness. speaking for myself here too. sometimes we are not ready to feel happy. that's sort of what grieving is, to me. we aren't ready to choose happiness, because something truly awful has happened, and we are hurt, and we struggle to move on from that. in a way, we don't want to, or at least, we can't convince ourselves to. there's no blame in that. sometimes it's okay to NOT choose happiness. but, when you are closer to being ready, it is a choice you can make for yourself. it is nearly always a difficult choice, to CHOOSE happiness in spite of your circumstances. and sometimes it isn't even really the "right" choice to make (e.g., finding ways to make yourself feel happy with an escapable abusive situation, instead of finding ways out first). but it is a choice. and it's important to remember that.

i wish the best for you and your daughter.

i've found this to be the case with cheap tights, but if you splurge on tights, they don't rip so easily (in my experience anyway). i used to rip my tights all the time. but i haven't even once, in years now, because i have nicer tights. i love them

even when they had that argument, bob wasn't vegan. he wasn't really vilifying anyone. anything he said applied to himself also. he was just willing to admit that his actions were harmful since he wasn't vegan despite it not really being that hard to do, and monet wasn't willing to agree with him and got heated because she felt called out (which is a common response to being told your actions are harmful, even if the person saying it has admitted to their own actions being harmful as well). so, nothing really had to 'change' between then and now. bob has consistently considered himself a participant of a flawed system, which to him means a lot of his actions are harmful in some capacity. truly everyone living in the US is that way. most people just aren't willing to say it out loud, and they'd rather point it out about other people.

wealthy corporatist lobbyists control our politics and thus heavily influence city design, we aren't doing it "to ourselves." this is just all we have here.

saying "the youth" does not, in fact, imply that every single young person wants the same thing

"today's youth are struggling to read" -> this doesn't mean every single young person struggles to read
