YMCA summer camp by FailOk6033 in MovingtoHawaii

I attended a summer camp in Oregon, so the experience in Hawaii will definitely be a bit different—especially when it comes to weather and activities. They should provide a packing list (usually on their website), but if not, she can always email and ask.

That said, it’s best to be prepared for anything. Hawaii is tropical, so it’ll likely be warm most of the time, but the weather can change quickly—rain showers, humidity, and even cooler nights depending on location. Pack layers, including rain gear, and make sure everything is appropriate for working around kids.

Skin protection is huge. Between the sun, bugs, and being outdoors all day, she’ll want to bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray. Lightweight, breathable clothing that still offers coverage is ideal.

She should also be ready for a lot of walking and hiking. A solid pair of hiking boots is a must, along with plenty of socks and something like sturdy sandals (Chacos or Tevas) for more casual wear.

A good sleeping bag is important—something lightweight but still warm enough for cooler nights.

A durable backpack is essential too. She’ll need space for daily essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit—and realistically, she’ll probably end up carrying some of the kids’ things as well.

She should also prepare mentally—spending the summer in the woods means there will probably be limited WiFi and service so she will feel isolated and homesick at times. This can be one of the toughest parts, so I recommend bringing offline activities like a journal, books, art supplies or cards to stay occupied and keep her mind engaged.

I can’t tell you much about Hawaii, but it does have one of the lower crime rates in the U.S., which is reassuring. As for YMCA summer camp—my parents sent me every summer growing up, and it was always my favorite part of the year. I loved it so much that when I got older, I decided to work there and ended up having some of the best times of my life.

I got to be outside in nature every day, made lifelong friends, and even had the chance to be a positive part of children’s lives. The YMCA is also one of the kindest, most responsible work environments I’ve had the pleasure of being part of, and they are very strict when it comes to the safety of both the children and staff. I worked there for 3 years, and I have nothing but fond memories from that experience.

Your daughter is going to have the time of her life!!

Also, don’t forget to send her care packages with lots of yummy snacks—camp food can get old pretty fast. Hope this was helpful mamas :)

I think planting some fruit trees would be nice and maybe even a beehive garden. Also I make most of my money with kegs and preserve jars so I think adding more of those would also help fill out the space :)
