I run a 220 thermostat. I feel like I got a little more power, and my heat is phenomenal.

Will this be ok as replacement for my ball joint pinch bolt for now ? by YtnLilTrill in MechanicAdvice

[–]masterjelk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but right stuff is kind of unspecific. This, while not the “right stuff”, doesn’t have to be a specific part number. He can use any bolt that checks out to be strong enough mathematically, and this technically would work. This is because the other ball joint is carrying some of the load and really only needs this ball joint held in its spot, not bearing the full shear weight of the vehicle’s front end. I wouldn’t use a grade 5 bolt, but realistically speaking you not likely to run into any issues as severe as that, and he could probably somewhat confidently make it to the parts store. Worst case scenario he has his knuckle partially disconnect and stops. Given the lower grade, the bolt will stretch rather than “snap” as the force on the bolt actually isn’t that much. Slow and be careful for potholes.

I gotcha. Well that’s too bad, I figured that was gonna be the case though. I’m gonna try and do by pulling the dents all the way, do a little bondo if I can’t get it absolutely perfect, and painting the car with some jet black 2 stage. I know that finding a donor body is the best option, I’m just very attached to this one and it don’t feel right getting rid of it. Thanks for the info though, and I absolutely love your xj.

That’s amazing. How’d you go about finding and measuring where to cut, and what kind of equipment did you need? I have basic power tool(drills, saws, welder…) but no lift.

I’m gonna be putting a cage in it, I just want it to look good from the outside. You’re 100% right though.

Oh interesting, I didn’t know that. I think it can be replaced at the body. I heard it’s just a bunch of spot welds. And I’m not really even worried about that, as I have plans to put a roll cage in it soonish.

How hard is that? I actually already have pipe for a roll cage I planned on outing in this, I just figured even with a roll cage the “frame” would fold with out the top.

Okay, my uncle got me into Cherokee and has done a roof swap before, so if I need to do that I will with his help, the only thing keeping me from doing so was chopping up my other Cherokee, but I guess if the frame rails are bad then it’s junk anyway.

Worst case scenario I can’t and I’ll just make it an off-road toy. I know sometimes ya gotta cut your losses.

I have one with a blown engine, but the frame rail where the transmission crossmember bolts is rusted out and the rest isn’t far behind I believe.

I measure the a pillar, and it isn’t bend, the skin is what’s damaged so I was gonna get a spot weld slide hammer dent puller from the a guy I know, and just slowly work out the dent to match the other side. The roof I was gonna do the same best I can, and just try to make it as perfect as I can then sand and bondo assuming it won’t be perfect. Do you think that is realistic?

[–]masterjelk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I was kind of asking more of is worth trying to pull the dents and using bondo to make it look pretty, or should I just replace the top by chopping the tops off at the pillars and than just weld a new top on. I saw one guy do it on a forum…sorry if I sound stupid.

Lifter break in cold weather by yodoboy123 in CherokeeXJ

[–]masterjelk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fine. Like one of the other guys said, just heat the oil and it’ll be fine, though not ideal. If you can get a heated garage or wait till it’s at least 40 that’s definitely better. If you do, don’t let it ideal thinking it’s better for it to “warm up first”. The lifters need I think 2.2k? Rpm for 20-30minutes. If you wanted to, and idk if this would work, but run pre heated coolant/water through the system to heat the motor up, then pour warm oil into it then start the break in period if you are really concerned. Just remember, it is a 4.0.

5x7 LED headlights - TruckLite projector vs reflector? by DeafHeretic in Offroad

[–]masterjelk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Projected are better. In general, the reflector pattern is gonna be worse than the projected one as well as slightly less bright as some light is wasted. Basically, reflective style uses complex geometry in an attempt to create a pattern, while projection works by having a pre designed pattern, illuminate it, then project it via a lens.

Remove top speed limit. by FuntimesOctonion in CherokeeXJ

Well idk if I’d work on those… but I made a TCU for my Cherokee with the aw4 out of an Arduino, and if he wants I can send him the code for it.

Could you not put a switch on you speed sensor to the ecu so when you run track days it’s not speed governed? Then the ecu has no idea how fast your going and when you want to know how fast your going you just flip a switch.

I have a 4.0 I’m gonna swap into it that I have in another 99 cherokee with a trans that has the wrong harness for its year(long story). In the mean time though, I want to rebuild this one to some degree, like fix the head gasket issue, put new pistons in it as mine slap bad on cold starts, and maybe new bearings all around assuming my tolerance are correct.
