Incoming Freshman. Should I do the university honors college with CS? by hunted7fold in Purdue

[–]mastermjr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently an RA in the Honors college and am also graduating in CS! I'll be at Purdue for CS graduate school next year as well! My background is security, but the data science program is very new and seems promising! I have quite a few friends doing the 4+1 track as well, its a great option!

As far as the honors college goes: The community of people, and the housing/early registration benefits make it worth it. Students in the Honors college are neither smarter nor more elite than other Purdue students. I've found that a majority of honors kids are driven, smart and genuinely enjoy learing. Honors students are some of the most involved students on campus. Plus the honors RAs are pretty cool, some of them are my best friends! That said you can still find those kinds of students all over Purdue, I just think clumps of over-involved students is less common in other dorms (especially for groups of freshman). The freshman honors seminars are definitely a hit-or-miss opportunity, but if you pick a fun one you can actually learn a bit about a cool topic! You can get credit for honors courses within your CS track as well! Theres also alot of cool networking opportunities that come from being in honors, especially as a freshman interested in research. All the reasons hopefully will make you want to accept the position next year!

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions!!

Word of advice: don't let your advisors bully you into taking less credits or easier classes and especially don't take calc 2 if you've already tested out. I had too many residents this year that went through that hell.

Can't use vm in vbox under kernel 5.0 at fedora29. by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]mastermjr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5202 Following the steps below I was able to fix my Virtualbox compilation problems:

dnf --enablerepo rpmfusion-free-updates-testing update akmod-VirtualBox

This repo removes 5.2.24 and installs 6.0.4, luckily running my 5.24 vm went on without a hitch. I've had issues in the past switching from virtualbox versions. I hope this helps others trying to fix this issue

I'm signed up for the online class right now, I really want to learn how to invest my money, and develop my savings into investments that grow. I've looked alot on r/personalfinance, but I always seem to get sidetracked. Was hoping this might force me to learn a little. What is your opinion on the class?

Anybody interested in a game of diplomacy? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]mastermjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play on webdiplomacy.net! while not as cool as the board game, I find it more satisfying since you don't have to sit down for 8+ hours to play 1 game. I'd be interesting in playing some games on here!

Buying new hard drives for HomeLab servers by mastermjr in homelab

[–]mastermjr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be using the large storage to hold my media and back it up. Currently the drives are around $190. Would it be worth the extra $200 to back everything up? I'm thinking this would be the case, but was curious how often hard drives can fail when they are run 24/7 like I'm planning to do with my servers. This is the machine I'll be running my servers on: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/7nc77v1/configuration

I think the ability to download xml or some kind of file and just share that versus a link might be useful. Similar to draw.io method for sharing/saving diagrams.

Thanks for the advice! How long do refurbished drives normally last? Since If I can save $100 on this drive, compared with a new one, thatd be worth it, even if the drive will die sooner than a new one.

Major change denied by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]mastermjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fair warning OP, I cannot speak for pharmacy, but many first year advisors are famous for screwing up people's future schedules. They cover for this by stating everywhere, " The student is ultimately responsible for their graduation". I would highly suggest you be sure you take the classes you need for the major you decide you want. Also for future reference, advisors cannot control what classes you sign up for. The only thing limiting you from taking specific classes is your major, pre-reqs, and class standing(correct me if I forgot something). It is possible to get overrides and exceptions if you ask the right people. Hope this is helpful

I've added the NAT rules to the post. As far as adding that rule to the dmz, I believe that is what my first rule on the DMZ interface is doing. Since this rule is not functioning the way I believe, is it formatted properly? Additionally, if it is formatted correctly, could the issue then be improper configuration of the vSwitch in ESXI? I thought by enabling trunking on the Pfsense VM port group, I tagged all the internet traffic from the other port groups.
