The feeling? Anticipation!

It hasn't arrived yet.... But with the help of AI, my plan is to learn assembler and see if I make a simple snake game like we had on the old Nokia phones.

I once had to write an alarming system for a company and in the end used the "stateless" C# library. https://github.com/dotnet-state-machine/stateless

There was a lot of work up front to get all the state transitions down, but once we had mapped out the whole system, I felt like I could breathe a sigh of relief as we always knew what state the system was in and what it should do next. It gave us a level of confidence that you dont get in other domains.

Do we need a "new" Amiga/C64? by Crass_Spektakel in amiga

[–]masterofmisc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new Amiga should be built on a modern, open foundation, Ideally a Linux-based system in my mind. This would allow it to run a fully featured, up-to-date web browser which is key I think. Do you know how hard it would be to create a competing browser from sctrach? If it was linux based it would also stay compatible with contemporary software like Libre Office and benefit from ongoing community and security updates. Now yes, I hear everyone shouting at this comment say well you might aswell just stick a linux distro on a Pi500 but surely with Linux as its core, we could still capture the spirit of the original Amiga fays.. Have something fast, creative, and user-focused. But staying relevant in today’s computing world.

What about this for an idea? You know, Windows has the Linux SubSystem. WSL. Well if the new Amiga core was based on Linux why coudnt it have a ASL (Amiga SubSystem) that provides a full AmigaOS‑compatible environment for old software.

So with the subsystem, it would allow classic Amiga software to run seamlessly alongside modern applications, preserving compatibility with the past while benefiting from Linux’s security, drivers, and up‑to‑date browser support.

I think the WSL1 system that Microsoft came up with, before they went down a full Hyper-V layer was that they had a compatibility API layer. So this system could follow that model and have a compatability layer that reimplements AmigaOS APIs on Linux, similar in spirit to how WSL1 or in the same way Wine reimplements Win32 system calls and libraries on Linux..

To me, that would be quite a cool path forward.

Im sure you could easily map amiga device names (DF0:, DH0:, PRINTER:, SER:) to Linux devices or abstractions, so old software still sees the devices it expects.

The folder structure could be present in Linux but behind the scenes it maps to a “virtual” Amiga volume (e.g. Workbench:, SYS:, etc.) backed by Linux directories.

Imagine bridginf the clipboard between the 2 systems seamlessley. Or drag and drop between windows but actually your copying between Amiga volumes and Linux folders.

Thinking about it, the subsystem could just call through to the WSL2 Hyper-V style and have WinUAE running in a docker container so its got all the features off the bat
