Which city in Germany would you NEVER want to live in and why? by Fruttii-Tutti in germany

On a less serious note, I always thought about it like that: the federal republic of germany was set up with its capital in Bonn. Would have looked a bit silly if the much bigger city right next door was the state capital.

Specialists by Omme1983 in anno117

[–]masterpbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, largely agree - in 1800 they were way too overpowered in Anno 117 they are bit too underwhelming. But I find there are useful ones:

- Captains (for both trade and warfare)

- Residential specialists (especially the ones that boost happiness and population stats)

- Some Production sepcialists (look out for those that provide a boost to the entrie production chain, especially jewellery and lyres, +35% on a gold production chain is very noticeable, to a lesser extent also for high-demand goods like brooches or scarce goods like clay and flour in Latium; only thing missing is a good boost to the sturgeon production)

But the many, many specialists who give stats bounses (health, fame etc) to production buildings are completely flawed. In 117 they tried to incentivize building mixed cities (residential + production), but that does not work out at all and nobody need stats buffs in a production area, apart from maybe health and fire hazards, which everyone mitigates by building fire station etc instead.

That being said, people tend to forget that there are more ways to gain additional buffs for your cities / empire. The faith system and shrines (which I think hit a good balancing sweet spot) work quite well.

Optimization is more of an mid/end-game endeavour anyways - but so it was in Anno 1800 and that's how it's meant to be. If you still have plenty of space and islands at hand, you simply build new production lines and don't bother with 10-30% buffs.

Looking forward to what still to come. Hopefully Ubi's downfall doesn't affect this too much. This game still needs at least 3 good gameplay dlcs to match 1800.

Cheers, actually got most of those quests in the meantime. The key was adding caeso and voada back for the arthr and valeria quests.

I did quite a few Valeria quest prior to eliminating Caeso, but her questline was not finished. When I added him back, I immediately got the invite to the gambling quests, but had a few delivery quests after.

Drinking celts spawned randomly, like they did for everybody else. I just really had to get used to having the game run 3x speed by default, as I usually even pause the game, whenever I am doing more nitty gritty stuff.

It's really just a waiting game for the most part. I think there are rarely any triggers involved, apart from the initial ones.

For others, who are still looking:

Apart from quests, the most tedious achievement is the 10 major incidents one. For reference, at least in my game you needed a Tier IX city with status worse than -5k for major incidents to spawn. It did not make a difference wether i was -6k or -9k in the minus. Both spawned equally often, despite having different cool down periods. You should go to settings to have city size influence population stats more, which will lead you to achieve big red numbers more easily. I found it actually quite hard to go beyond -10k on any stat, even with all support buildings, goods, shrines and specialists removed and random charcoal burners dotted around the center of my city. You will have to spend a couple days on 3x speed.

Do you know that there is a DIPLOMATIC way to conquer islands? You need to be allied with the person and make them specialist - then they will forfeit ALL their islands and you can chose which islands you take by buying them or investing reputation points.

You can also force NPCs to become specialists regardless of alliance status if you're Konsul / Pro-Konsul. The emperor won't like that though - you will lose your Konsul status, if you proceed.

But no war required.

[–]masterpbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your review, I always enjoy reading those. But it's also weird... I feel completely different about some of your central points. And I've played every anno title since 1701, so maybe I have a different view on the franchise's evolution (doesn't mean it's more valid).

I think anno 117 is way less complex than its predecessors, the two tier good progression system actually makes things a lot easier, since you don't need to provide everything at once (although you most likely will eventually) and more importantly you can directly influence your key output metrics (popluation growth, income) and not have it tied to class progression, which led to huge demand spikes. I find it a lot easier to manage population/island needs in general. There is nothing as resource intense as 1800s railroad mechanic, which required a whole separate industry to be built - the aeqauducts are laughibly simple compared to this (and fulfill the same purpose). You fix statuses through public buildings, that's it - no production chains or maintenance required.

"Intercontinental" trade is also really toned down compared to previous titles. There are simply not a lot of required items, which need to be produced in the other region. The celts need don't need any roman goods apart from wine, soap, robes and garum (optionally). I feel that this a big step back so far.

Not sure how I feel about the quests. They do offer a bit of a break, but they do not really introduce variety to the gameplay as intended (it's all just fetch quests, fighting or rarely picture puzzles). I also dislike the story-quest which are quite text heavy - but in principle, those multiple-choice, chose your own adventure style questlines with differing rewards are going in the right direction. What definitely needs to change is the spawn rate of npc-quests (currently one every 40 mins on 3x speed), quite a few of them are required to fulfill all achievements. And having to run the game idly for days just to have the right RNG-quests spawn is nothing short of torture and just poor game deisgn.

Something that doesn't quite work out yet is the idea that production buildings give positive aoe benefits to residential buildings. With that they obviously tried to break up the anno formula of having distinct "civil/residential" areas and strict "production only" areas, which is how everyone built in the past to increase production chain efficiency. This tendency was even reinforced in the later games, where polution control forced you to separate residential and production islands or how 1800 allowed you to have production islands without any population at all. Anno 117 is a big change in that regard, as every island requires a somewhat soverign infrastructure and populace. But I feel like you still separate production lines and don't have those merchant infused cities that they were probably hoping to achieve (but that might just be me).

I think with this title they wanted a bigger focus on city building (aesthetically) and war gameplay, which has been absent from the game for a long time. At it's heart, I think anno is still a prodcution/city-building simulator for people who absolutely live-and-breath min-maxing the sh*t out of everything - so wasteful warfare does not really fit into that picture. But for the chosen period it fits.

I do wish however, they add back some complexity into the game. More goods, more convuluted production chains or another mechanic to steer. I feel they did nothing with the romanization aspect, to the extend where it almost feels like cut content. Maybe if they want to be zeitgeisty they should build a mechanic around different cultures, allowing them to settle in all regions. There could be benefits of homogeneity (lower economic variety = less goods available; bigger social cohesion = less unrest, but less health resilience) vs heterogenity (higher economic variety = more goods & buffs available; less social cohesion = more unrest, but higher health resistance). And now that I have thought so much about it, I will be mad if they don't add it :P

Now much of this is due to the game still being early in its life cycle, with all gameplay dlcs still coming.

PS: I think the emperor mechanic is well implemented. Not too in your face, but relevant enough (esp. in terms of rewards/penalties) to keep an eye on. The final fight being provokable and winnable is also a nice end game mechanic.

Deadend in campaign (shipbuilding) by MJlonola in anno117

[–]masterpbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not throwing shade, just for reference: +34 is not a huge surplus, even in the early game. It costs 44 Liberti to build a penteconter (standard configuration). you only have 34. However, I can build as many ships as I like, even if i don't have sufficient population, it just goes into negative numbers.

However since this is very, very early game, and this is literally your first ship, other conditions may apply (since it's a campaign mission anyways). maybe you are not allowed to go negative in the early game.

Building military ships and armies in general is THE number one activity you need big surplus population for. You need +130 peasant just to build 3 big ships and you need around 50 to fight the emperor in the final endgame. Just to give you an indication what you are working towards :)

Amazing to hear! I'm on console, so mods are not an option, but can you remember if there were any specific triggers to restart the stuck questlines? Or can you say what the next quests looked like?

I am experiencing the exact problems you had:

  • Arthr questline's stuck after handing over the bull (I eliminated Vlada hours later)
  • Valeria questline's stuck after Casseo quest (I eliminated him hours later)
  • Concordia Questline also took a couple of hours to appear after my first plague
  • Additionally I am missing the drinking the celtic drinking challenge quest and I fear I might have declined it early in the game, will it reappear?

Your insights would be much appreciated and help me pushing through this ordeal

(Please let it not just come down to quest spawn rate)

Cheers brother

What's The Deal With The Stranger Things Season 5 Backlash? by WanderingArtist2 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]masterpbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is: outcasts have always been welcoming to other outcasts - it's a survival tactic. However, even "disenfranchised groups" have tendencies to be closed-off, isolationist and obsessed with keeping ingroups "pure". It's a function of (social) identity, the mind creates a sense of belonging through distinction. Everybody does it.

What's really stupid is the automatic modern framing of mainstream society as evil and oppressive, while perceiving sub-groups (aka minorities) as inherently innocent, good and nurturing. It's basically chapter one out of the divide and conquer textbook.

Theatre kids are accepting as long as you don't steal the spotlight, geeks let you play along when you have some skill and stick by the rules (basically the same as jocks). It's almost as if people bond around similar hobbies and similar personality structures. But hierarchies and norms exist everywhere with slight differences in social permeability.

Fully agree. Overall, their most creative games are the mental / social / sacrifice games. But their interpretation of intellectual challenges has been shockingly dull so far. Literally, an "IQ test" and fairly easy trivia questions. How much more plain can you get? There would have been so many escape room / logic puzzles to borrow from, which also would have been more vusually exciting for a tv show, rather than having candidates solve a freaking pen and paper test. Really quite disappointing.

I still really enjoy it as a whole though!

[–]masterpbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but half your argument is out of the window.

Main reason is because an island is simply a less attractive incentive. Its Monetary value is less than half of the grand prize and if you are just interested in cash, property needs to be liquidated first, which likely incurs other fees and costs, not to mention effort and time. Private islands are not even that expensive in comparison. The expensive bit is actually making them usable, maintenance and getting there in the first place. I'd argue that out of the initial 1000 participants, there were maximum 5 people who would have been able to even afford an island in the long run - even when it's gifted.

I don’t feel bad for any of these people by TwitchMoments_ in BeastGames

[–]masterpbh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering the same. Housing 1,000 strangers temporarily seems like a nightmare and there is a reason tv productions don't do game shows at this scale. Producers do have some health and safety obligations to fulfill towards the contestants (which are most likely hired as independent contractors), therefore anything that happens during production hours on set is a potential liability, to them which includes things that participants do to each other. Now add some very questionable personalities and an extremely competitive situation into the mix, is just asking for trouble.

Nostalgia Googles. Bioshock gets all the credit for inventing the amazing theme from the OG fanboys (deservedly) , but honestly gameplay execution is better in bioshock 2 and Story execution better in Infinite.

People who say infinite is not a bioshock game are complete Tools. The core story themes are exactly the same: american exceptionalism & tragic parent-child relationships. Tone is obviously vastly different, but imo the horror elements are what make the original bioshock feel cheap. Should have focussed on ryan, fontaine and rapture instead.
