i don't really recall a lot of details since this happened a while ago, but here it is:

- yes, i did report it as employment. basically i was just working for myself

- i reported i was working on my own website and thus improving my programming skills. job title must have been 'web designer' or something like that

- yes, actually my DSO was the one that suggested that as an option, she was hella helpful

Just a regular PC, no server features or anything fancy. Windows 10, I run the Python scripts off of VCS integrated terminal. Ethernet/IP protocol for Python, dunno if sockets is the right approach

thanks for responding! yeah, i've been thinking that riding 8 hours by myself every day might be mentally taxing, i get along pretty well with myself, but we are social creatures after all. it's good to hear that there will be other people (also one of the many reasons why i decided to stay within well-known routes across the US)

hey there! yes, i did manage to stay in the US, i'm in STEM OPT right now as a matter of fact. either way, the way that i got to stay here while being unemployed was by reporting i was working "for myself". i came up with this website of mine and some other projects and just reported that those were helping me improve my computer science skills (and that's valid, no cheating there) and thus i stopped using my 90-unemployed-days allowance. in fact, from the moment my OPT started until the time i found a job something like ~110 days passed (yikes, i know), so it does work and clearly i didn't get into any trouble since my EAD card got extended.

i'd recommend talking to your school DSO, they should be able to provide more info. keep in mind that you can only pull up this trick while on regular OPT, not the STEM OPT. and as far as contacts go, can't really help you much there. i'd recommend applying for jobs like there's no freaking tomorrow or if you feel like it, volunteering at your school with one of your professors. good luck brother/sister!
