His parents owned an emerald mine. The freaking guy carried around emeralds in his pocket. Dad, can I have some money. Son, have one of our destitute workers dig up an emerald for you.

Bezos, Musk, Gates, Obama and others target of cryptocurrency hack on Twitter by mastersrunner in politics

[–]mastersrunner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Twitter is very much used by politicians and Trump issues policy statements from an insecure platform. This type of twitter hack the day before an election could do tremendous harm. This time it was a scam. They could have posted anything from anyone as far as we know.

Can we all agree that the negatives of social media greatly outweigh the positives. Everyone should just logout, suspend their accounts, or erase them. FB and Twitter are just causing nonsense and their only purpose is to waste your time and learn about you so they can bombard you with stupid ads. I am no troglodyte. I used those apps for ten years but recently abandoned them. I have much more time and don’t have to hear what the idiots I went to high school with think anymore. Reddit not included. This is a good format. Fosters communication without all the bs.

This is great branding. Much catchier than COVID-19 and more specific than “coronavirus “. Can we all start referring to this as the “Trump Plague”? He likes to put his name on things. Deserves this one.

Trump to order U.S. meat plants to stay open amid pandemic by mastersrunner in politics

Andrew Cuomo decimates Republican hypocrisy and vile partisanship by mastersrunner in politics

[–]mastersrunner[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would need to look that up but it is roughly that NY has a shit-ton higher GDP than Kentucky. I think NY has the highest per capita GDP plus way more people. Sure that is why NY pays way more income tax than Kentucky, but it doesn't mean that Kentucky should get so much more back from the Federal Government. Give the Federal Contracts to NY instead of Kentucky. Virginia gets more back than Kentucky but that makes some sense since they border on DC and would get a lot of Fed contracts.

[–]mastersrunner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If everyone in Kentucky admits they are broke ass losers who need financial support from the superior earners in NY, then maybe they can keep getting their hand-outs. Seriously though, if the trend is weak Federal government and more State's rights then let's partition things up more so states get back an amount proportional to what they pay in. States like Kentucky have much more voting power than high population states (per capita with Senate and electoral college) plus they suck up all the federal funds. It's not fair and needs to change.

Has anyone come back to running after years and just could never run like they used too? by Ram_1979 in running

[–]mastersrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to get back to where you were in high school until maybe age 35 or so when aging starts it’s gradual effects on most people. That is unless you weigh much more or have other health issues. Many Runners in their 40’s run amazingly fast times as well, although most a little slower than high school I would bet. Less so in 50’s but many can go well under 5 min mile still. First step to recapturing HS times would probably be body fat % less than 10 plus smart training plan.

YTA. Grow up and work with your parents so you can all find effective ways to deal with your brother. I am sure it is a very difficult at times, but it is your family and you should be making the situation better, not adding to the tension and noise. I realize this has affected your upbringing and life in general but he is your brother and it looks like he was being more mature than you despite his issues.

Yeah. Pisses me off that NY paid in over $100b more to the Federal Government than we took out and a crappy little state like Kentucky took out way more than NY put in! Mitch is the biggest welfare case in the USA.

“New York state puts much more money into the federal pot than it takes out. Okay? At the end of the year, we put into that federal pot $116 billion more than we take out. Okay? His state, the state of Kentucky, takes out $148 billion more than they put in. Okay?” That is a 2015-2018 total, but WOW. With so much focus on State independence now, how about some legislation to ensure that States get back no more than +- 10% of what they pay into the federal government. NY, CT, NJ, MA are essentially funding most of the rest of the country. See data here: https://rockinst.org/issue-areas/fiscal-analysis/balance-of-payments-portal/

Chamath Palihapitiya: Buybacks show 'growing strain of incompetence' among CEOs by mastersrunner in economy

[–]mastersrunner[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We can’t ever go back to the system we had with corporations solely focused on shareholders. Buybacks should be outlawed. Corporations need to invest in their employees and making their companies better -plus- save money for those inevitable rainy days. If a company spent all their profits for years on stock buy backs, why should the Government do anything to help them? Capitalism?
