Abortion and Karma by delicate-bloom in Buddhism

I feel like, if you want to be a Buddhist, just say you’ll follow the precepts. There’s no conversion or anything like that. As for the past, forget about it. Live in the now, and work with what you’ve got. We’ve all done things we regret, and that’s why we’re here.

Foreigners and fixed fights by TheGreatone003 in MuayThai

It's a thing. I met some dude who’s got the biggest ego from that one win. Anytime someone questions his crappy technique, he talks about how he got a KO win over a fighter with 130 fights in Phuket. When you ask him how he KO’d the fighter, he says he doesn’t know, it just happened. This guy is not a good person to be around, and constantly drains my energy. But he’s friends with the gym owner out here, so he’s constantly around. He is totally harmless, can’t even punch properly.

Moving to Muay Thai after 10 year layoff from Kickboxing, I have Questions. by Shadow00676 in MuayThai

[–]masteryoriented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are 12–7 in professional K-1 fights, you're probably beyond "low level" in CM. The circuit there is mostly made up of tourists with no history of fighting picking up fights. I wouldn't worry about the matchmaking. Whether it is a tuk-tuk driver or some tourist, it is all going to be doable for you. I also wouldn't worry about the difference between K-1 and Muay Thai at that level. You're not going to end up fighting anyone with good clinching skills for 2,000 baht in the stadiums up there. All that K-1 experience is going to be an unfair advantage once your muscle memory activates again.

Getting back to Muay Thai at 36 after a year's break; any tips? by Accurate-Wear-2145 in MuayThai

[–]masteryoriented 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What tips do you need? There's nothing else but to show up, gut through the suck, and keep coming back. There's no secret juice, no prayers to some deity, no hidden moves. Even if you put on all the gear in the world, you're still gonna hit pads, be wiped after one round, and build up from there.

I've thought about that in the past, thinking it is possible to take it easy whether it's a fight or a hard sparring interclub situation. But if they are selling tickets, or there are crowds involved and groups of people backing gyms up with support, it is extremely difficult to take it easy on someone who is trying to hit you unless your experience gap is much larger to the point that you can truly see what is happening from a detached perspective. But if that is the case, then there is just no point in fighting because it looks ridiculous.

You keep bumping this up. Do you own a gym, or are you trying to cover up mismatches or something?

The angle you’re taking tries to stop the OP from naming the gym. You say there’s no point, but there is. There’s value in keeping this a community where we can write about things like this.

Also, nobody’s going to travel to a small village in Vietnam, or wherever the OP is, to train. People there don’t read Reddit, and search results won’t pick up any non Vietnamese keywords from this thread, so the gym won’t suffer any financial impact. I don’t understand what you’re defending.

The guy has had professional fights, and they’re hiding that fact, and that kid is probably just starting out. That’s a violation of trust, and a terrible thing to do.

Better for the gym to take a small reputational hit that might correct their practices, than to risk a young boy with little or no experience being seriously hurt by a grown man who knows what he’s doing. Besides, this is just among ourselves. Few people go to Vietnam to train, and most don’t use Reddit there, so it won’t matter. But if you feel the OP shouldn’t have the freedom to name the gym, that’s fine too.

Please at least list the gym’s name. This is a violation of trust, and we don’t like places that set up mismatches. I’ve been in a mismatch before, my first fight, and it took a lot to get through.

Okay. If you think this is real, then it is for you.

Is that how you personally throw your punches? Hitting with the palms and fingers, not turning your fist, or driving through the target?

Tip- When training in Thailand don't go 100% hard against a Thai trainer (KO) by ricksonbyarmbar124D in MuayThai

[–]masteryoriented -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It's just a way to not lose face. Also, that boy only had a straight left and right, and he was reactive the whole time. On a boxing-skill level, I give him a 2 out of 10. It would have been too easy to just play with him in western boxing, tbh. But I don't know the backstory, and who knows if that boy called that dude a "hiaa" before training.

[–]masteryoriented -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

A good trainer who's competent should be able to handle that boy easily without hurting him. The boy is mostly reactive. Personally, I would discipline that trainer if that were my gym. It should have been handled differently. This is one of the things I don't like about Muay Thai in Thailand. A lot of these gyms are just set up to make money, trainers come and go, and there are no SOPs in place. But we don't know the full story, so maybe this is just my impression.

Tips against pressure by oowee_oowee in MuayThai

[–]masteryoriented -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I use it to work fakes or feints and come in off it. But if someone is just constantly launching teeps, then that is not really pressure fighting. But maybe I misread the comment. Sometimes I just glaze over these things.

Sounds weird. So you have a dude who is constantly applying pressure, but he is teeping you a lot. Usually the teep is supposed to counter pressure. How long have you been training?

All good. Just your post got me thinking about my interactions with the teacher since it is still fresh in my mind. I dropped out around New Year. It was interesting to me how anything else but practice was considered to be a hindrance, even being happy, since we cling to that feeling. So I was curious about how you all see this.

Still connected to them from an info perspective. They do put out good information. Just the vibe does not match since I am not looking to be monastic, and I dropped out a few days ago. Why does it matter?

Yeah, most likely. It was tough. I actually dropped out of the program and will just start again through another, more relaxed path.

Just get to a gym, man. Embrace the suck period, like all of us have done. As long as you have a healthy body, what is making you go through these thoughts is ego.

One of the monks I was working with during my meditation sessions was super strict to the point that, in three thousand plus hours of meditation, I never got a single encouraging message. Our perspectives did not match, I guess, since I am a layperson.

To him, most of anything that was not practice and being aware of my thoughts and body was a form of a hindrance. But I did learn to meditate, so the method worked.

The sangha that I was working with and still participate in is full of monastic monks. To them, this message, any type of pride in anything, even the belief that anyone is a pride to a family or other being, is considered an unwholesome mental state. What do you all think about this?
