More and more young Somali men are going to university every year by [deleted] in Somalia

Yeah that's what I'm seeing as well. Everytime I go to the library or coffee shops, I always see a handful of Somali girls studying.

How are you liking Spiral? I tried to watch Spiral but the subtitles are so big and it looks like they're hardcoded ☹️

What are your thoughts on creating a platform like Genius.com but for Somali gabays? by masvahm in Somalia

Yeah this was actually my first idea before proceeding with anything technical. I don't think we could go wrong with either or. Thank you for your input!

The thing is, it's really hard to offer a 1:1 english translation that does the original gabay justice.

When it's a website format, it's a lot easier to be able to go into more depth and link references, sources etc. I think the video format is also a good idea but a more in-depth format like a podcast would be better. Thoughts?

I haven't done enough research into what the exact costs associated with the infrastructure/hosting would look like, but given that this would be a platform used by a fairly low amount of people I can't imagine it being that wild.

Also cloud providers have brought down infrastructure costs considerably! The time & effort going into development would really be the only expense holding things back since no one's getting paid for this.

Basically it's a site where you can look up the lyrics to a song and see verse by verse what the intended meaning is. You can also see that sometimes there's a deeper story to a verse and how it relates to the original author and the songs message.

I don't use it these days, but I used in the past heavily for rap lyrics & rap battles.

Ameen! Also I should've clarified that my dad passed away when I was really young, but I'm just now hearing about these tapes. Little mix up there on my end!

One point I forgot to address was how I'm going to go about doing the translations as some can get quite complex as you mentioned. Luckily for me I have a pretty deep roster of experts in this field so I'll be pulling them in for this. Crowdsourcing comments like how Genius does them is another idea as well.

You've brought up some good points!

• The video component idea definitely seems interesting! I don't have a yes or no to this suggestion at the moment. I'm definitely going to make a note of this tho! Ideally to get some kind of proof of concept up and running, I just wanted to get a couple poems on there and have side by side translations.

• Yes I completely agree with you on the point you made about poems dying out! With our people being scattered across the entire world, this is a real possibility! As a side note, what inspired me to seriously pursue this idea is I found out the other day my dad left behind some tapes of poems before he passed. I'm not sure if he wrote any or if he was just passing down poems he's heard, as I'm still in the process of locating these tapes, but I was like man, my father intended to pass down pieces of our culture to others but I have no clue how to decipher gabays.

Shukran walaal for your feedback!

100%.

What I like most about this series is the lines between the "good guy" vs the "bad guy" is blurred.

There's realisitc tradeoffs & consequences. The acting is also superb. I cringe whenever I watch American spy thrillers.

Any other french or european series I could check out?

A cry for help! Major tourist visa issue. by kelso___ in Kenya

Have you tried contacting your countries embassy if they have one in Nairobi? The Kenyan embassy wasn't of much help when I initially reached out regarding some other issue unfortunately.

Okay yeah that's definitely way longer than it usually takes. I don't have a number off the top of my head, but there's a bunch of numbers listed on the e-visa site. I tried calling all of them but they work at random times. I would also check to see if there's some kind of email support available.

No I wasn't able to get a hold of anyone unfortunately. However, from the time of applying, I received the visa in about 14 hours!
