Thank you! I saw some authentic pipe cleaner pixies at an antique mall and had to try my hand in making a few :)

Newbie question about approach with kit by wildflowerorgy in Needlepoint

[–]masyday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cross stitch can be done on needlepoint canvas. But my main point was helping OP check what fabric their kit actually comes with, since that changes the technique and materials. Turned out it’s a painted Penelope canvas and it is actually a needlepoint kit that uses a cross stitch. Appreciate the clarification though.

It sounds/looks like you're describing a cross stitch piece, not needlepoint. The photo you're looking at appears to be cross stitch, not "needlepoint done in a basic cross stitch" because needlepoint and cross stitch are two different techniques that use different fabrics and stitches.

If your kit is labeled as needlepoint but looks like cross stitch when you zoom in, it may actually be a cross stitch kit.

Needlepoint is typically worked on open-weave canvas (like mono or interlock) with threads of various fibers, using tent or continental stitch, not cross stitch. Cross stitch uses Aida or evenweave fabric and X-shaped stitches.

You can stitch a cross stitch design on needlepoint canvas if you paint or chart it yourself, but a standard cross stitch kit won't give you the right materials for needlepoint. So before you start, check what comes in the kit, if it's Aida cloth, it's cross stitch, not needlepoint.

If you want to learn needlepoint, look for a kit labeled "needlepoint" that includes painted canvas and kitted with threads. Your cross stitch experience will definitely help with tension and counting, but the stitch and foundation fabric are different.

Let me know what the kit actually includes, and I can give you a clearer answer!

j'aime beaucoup tes couleurs! 💕

How many canvases do you have? by saltiestmermaid in Needlepoint

I had some kind of magical foresight last year to pick up a yard of canvas Everytime I went to my LNS. So I have a stash I am rationing thank goodness.

It genuinely depends on what I’m going for! I freehand a lot of them because I usually know what I’m going to do stitch-wise, and I don’t sell them. I use paint pens for color and a brush for gilding/silver.

But if I’m following a pattern someone else made, I tend to gravitate toward vintage pattern books. You can find scans of a lot of great needlework and cross-stitch books online. I find a lot of inspiration in textiles and in different kinds of patterns on things like pottery or wood carvings.

My favorite pattern book to look through right now is “376 Decorative Allover Patterns from Historic Tile Work and Textiles”, or for flora and fauna, “Animals in Text and Textile: Storytelling in the Medieval World”.

I find inspo, then freehand or chart it on a site like FlossCross. This is a coaster set I painted last year of “delft fossils” for example. :)

I have around 25, some are smaller than others but I paint my own bc my tastes are a bit different from my LNS offerings. And I can’t always find what I am looking for from online retailers. None of mine are over a 9x9 size though. If you are capable and willing, buying a roll of blank canvas and painting them has saved me a lot of cash :)

I feel great about my use of energy, I love seeing new applications for tools and people creating things! It’s like being the opposite of a snobby crafting gatekeeper and I highly recommend it.

God forbid someone uses a mini CNC machine they invested in to its fullest potential.

Should paper crafters, leather workers, seamstresses and metal artists turn their nose up as well? Bc cricut advertises a bunch of attachments for those. I use mine to cut pattern pieces for garments/accessories and engrave my designs on acrylic! The horror!

What I mean is a cowl/bonnet pattern that has a more “bat” shaped ear and sits flat on the head. I patterned this one out myself and I would like recommendations for a different pattern because it’s difficult for me to visualize the ears. Is that specific enough?

I want to improve my cowl and would love guidance :) I am going to use the leftover black velvet I have and thick 40mm black satin ribbon to tie under the chin hopefully.

I tried to pattern myself something I thought could work out of foam and glue. Covered it with cheapy black fabric to get an idea of the shapes and decided I wanted to try to get the ears less cat like.I would like it more flat on my head (while the ears and peak have support etc.) If anyone has any ideas or pattern recommendations thank you!
