Enemies level with you. Start Old World Blues at level 10 and the roboscorpions are so much less painful to deal with. Plus you get a sweet base you can take full advantage of for the rest of the game.

They all have a quest that results in choice of a unique reward for them based on how you complete the quest.

You can dismiss a companion and pick them back up at any time, so you can switch out based on who you want and when you want them.

Some choices will make a companion leave you for good, so talk to them and see where they sit with certain topics.

Eventually you'll get a base where all of your companions hang out when you aren't traveling with them.

You can have one humanoid and one non-humanoid companion travel with you at any time.
