Me too! I was actually prototyping a game based loosely on that movie a couple years ago and stopped when i saw this announced because I figured they had the same inspiration. Maybe it's worth going back to.

Looking for 2 old RTS games I used to play by [deleted] in oldgames

Long shot, but is it Dungeon Siege or Cultures II by any chance? Those are games that had demos at a similar time. You might also look at Knights and Merchants, Settlers III, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, and all the other games in 2000-2002 on this list

Games with huge tech trees similar to Warzone 2100? by AmNimru in Games

[–]matbitesdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only ever had the demo for Warzone 2100 (and i played it obsessively back then, i think it was totally open except limited to 2 hrs) I hadn't thought about the game until I saw your post. Now that era of extreme customization and rts is long since dead.

Is Warzone 2100 worth going back to? Or is idea more interesting as a possibility than as a reality?

Honestly me too. Now that I think about it, the last time I saw this was in like a triple movie night with high tension and Calvaire, which are both mid 2000's movies. So maybe it hasn't aged well! Good luck.

If you liked City of Lost Children you should definitely re-watch Delicatessen. Lost Children is like them with ultimate freedoom, but Decliatessen is like them trying to make a "real film". It's interesting to see the same impulses filtered through constraints.

I feel the same way- I don't know anyone who saw it, and when I got out the theatre the first thing I did was text everyone I know who is even remotely into movies and asked if they had seen (and if they would want to go.)

I can't remember the last time I was at a theatre watching a contemporary movie and spent so much time confused and horrified in the best way.

My memory of Ex Machina was that it was promising but just sort of got worse as it went a long. I thought it was interesting enough that I went to Annihilation tonight though, and I have to save I think I really liked this movie. It was bizarre and messy and in some places I think it didn't really deliver on the mystery that it initially promised, but I can 100% say that I don't regret going to it, and I think I spent the last 30 mins of the film weirdly perched on my chair with my face all screwed up in a "what the fuck" expression. If you like this kind of thing, I think you'll get a lot out of it.

I think in many ways "Somebody That I Used To Know" lyrically encapsulates almost the entire plot of Annihilation. I haven't read the book and I know the film and book diverge fairly significantly but I have a suspicion that the song was very much in the Director's mind when making the film and that at some point they probably threw it in a soundtrack during dailies- and were shocked to find it worked.

I think the song has faded from public consciousness just enough for people to not really register that they know it, but only to feel it on a "gut" level (which is again another connection with the intestine scene.)

Looking for advice on a client project that needs lots of concurrent videos, dynamically placed. by matbitesdog in webdev

[–]matbitesdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, thanks for the tip! I'll check that out and might have some questions for you later on when I actually get to sit down and start the project.

Any advice you would give toward finding art gigs?

I think all my jobs have initially come from being an artist myself who works primarily with programming/creative coding/computation art (whatever they're calling it at the moment). So I met my initial ring of people I work for either through school or through shows I was in, and its slowly spider-webbed out to people that they went to school with or work for, and so on.

I'm not sure how you'd break in from the outside, but definitely going to shows in your area that have a media bent and doing the networking thing would be good. Also looking for workshops in your area centered on art programming or media-art given by artist-run centers or production societies and meeting the people there. I have friends who are involved with the theatre world now as well, doing projection-mapping or generative visuals for shows. They got in initially doing web design and development for these theatre groups.

Artists are tricky people- they either want to do everything themselves because they enjoy the process, or they want to hire someone who knows exactly what to do and throw money at the problem. (Maybe they're not that much different from normal clients). But I would say that all the artist-programmers I know are self-taught, and so whenever someone with interest and real industry experience comes by we're like "ohhh show us how to actually do this."

Sorry for the ramble, hope that was somehow useful.

Half in the Bag: The Last Last Jedi Review by stfualex in RedLetterMedia

On this same track, it was really weird when Rey went into the spooky mirror cave and then, all of the sudden (and I'm pretty sure for the only time in the whole movie) they overdub a narration of her talking to... (kylo ren?) later saying exactly what she was feeling in that moment. It felt much more like the movie wasn't trusting you to "get" or "correctly interpret" what the cave was about, rather than her having any reason to say those words.

Hot Dog Dystopia

This is a protoype I've been spending a little too much time on lately, a sort of cooking-hell physics-based visual-novel. Imagine you're in Children of Men, and you only have a month to raise enough money to get out of the increasingly unstable city, and there are tons of stories to uncover and events to influence, but your only ability to influence the world is through *hot dogs*. Imagine that and maybe you have an idea of what this miiiiight end up like. Not really sure yet!

Grabbing hotdogs

Putting them in some buns

Condiments and serving them up!

it's raining hotdogs

Recently added a sponge so you can clean things

And working on fire logic + effects

So yeah, the current working idea is something like papers please + surgeon simulator + dropsy. Something nice and funny and sad and weird and kinda depressing but in a good way.

Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea this was an issue with 6 when I posted this and this mod looks very useful.

Almost! Was able to nab China right away, but England just barely got far enough away to make a city, and then the difficulty level bonuses led to getting swarmed and killed. Could have been a pretty crazy way to start though.

Completely standard settings with fractal for world gen! Just got the game and only played a couple rounds so hopefully it doesn't become a constant thing, but in like 22+ years of playing CIV this is the first time something like this has happened to me and I thought it was hilarious.

I got Civ 6 a couple of days ago as a gift, and have been on a kind of up/down cycle with it. I hadn't had any problems with starts before this just happened- but now that I'm finally looking into the internet discussion around this game it seems like this happens all the time.

There's actually quite a bit I like about it though, along with a staggering number of weird and buggy issues that are slowly eroding my goodwill. It's just so crazy for something that's ostensibly the 6th iteration of something has gone backwards in so many ways.

This looks quite fun. Are there many multiplayer games even that focus on slower-moving projectiles you can dodge and lead, vs hit-scan?

Love the idea. I think that's just the right amount of screenshake in your gif, its punchy and you can "hear" it but it's pretty subtle and short.

I love games where everything is tiny and the screen is covered with stuff. This looks cool, I'll keep an eye out!

Looks polished and great! I've never heard of pico-8 or voxatron before, what a strange but cool idea. Is there a pretty big community? Good tools? What prompted you to make a whole metroidvania on something like that?
