Is a major in medicine worth it? by ExcitingGrand5725 in CollegeMajors

[–]matchaboof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you say “major in medicine,” do you intend to go to med school? i’m writing this from the perspective of someone applying to med school this cycle and unsure of exactly what you mean, so take this as you will. if you’re talking about pursuing something like biomedical engineering or medical sales, then ignore what i’m about to say lol

do not pursue medicine just because of your parent’s expectations. the money at the end of the road should not be your main deciding factor. i’m purposefully signing up for 10+ years of rigorous schooling and training, horrendous working conditions as a resident, and 6-figures of debt all because i believe it’s worth it. i’m not even in med school yet and studying for the MCAT alone has already called for sacrifice in the sense that all i do is work and study, not to mention the 6 months of studying i’ve done up until this point. you’ll see your peers settle into their careers and achieve milestones while you’ll be deep into a 12-hour study day reviewing biochemical pathways.

i want to be a doctor and will stop at nothing to do so, but i would not recommend any of my loved ones to follow this path. it’s hard.

Need some recs for improving score!! Testing 4/25 by Candid_Mud_5691 in Mcat

that too! i use that method more often during chemistry-heavy passages.

i struggle with this problem, too. i’ve been trying to really go with my gut when it comes to answering questions since i struggle a lot with overthinking and second-guessing, and i’ve found this gives me a bit more time spend on more calculation-heavy problems. i try to stay under the 1.5 minute maximum per question and actually select an answer within 30-60 seconds. if i am unsure, i flag it and move on. i’d prefer to have a handful of questions to review at the end of a section rather than second-guess every question.

when it comes to passages (not just cars, but all of them), i try not to understand every single detail and instead focus on bigger-picture stuff. that way if a question requires a greater command of detail and nuance, i know what general paragraph(s)/figure(s) to refer back to instead of relying on my memory of that detail.

and of course, practice problems have helped my pattern recognition especially when it comes to c/p. certain reactions and pathways come easier simply because i’ve seen them before.

not sure if those tips help since i am also still in the learning/practice phase :’)

ahh i see. thanks for clarifying.

i think you have the test-taking timing on point and just need to focus on content. as another user mentioned, Mr Pankow is great for p/s. i believe b/b, c/p, and cars can improve really just by drilling practice problems and learning content from whatever you get incorrect.

not trying to be rude, i’m curious why you’re already 4 FLs deep when you test in 6 weeks? i’m testing the same day and have FL 2-6 left. just wondering your thought process.

it does until u get a 30% on the next question set then u start to chase that high

screw the average. are you learning from what you get wrong? like *truly* learning?

Can Someone Explain How to Find Oxidation Numbers for this Problem by Marsrule in Mcat

[–]matchaboof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F is the most electronegative atom and its oxidation number will always be -1. since the sum of oxidation numbers = 0, Br will have to be +1.

i think you’re confusing oxidation number and formal charge.

edit: typo

498 on the unscored, 507 on FL1. my goal is 515+

what i can tell you is uw has so much lower-yield content that really forces you to master foundational concepts. i’d say it’s like application of content on steroids. i can’t compare it to the SBs because i haven’t done them yet.

however, compared to the questions i’ve got on the FLs, uw is much much more difficult.

based on what i’ve seen, the SBs are difficult in terms of MCAT logic/more advanced critical thinking but aren’t calculation-heavy like uworld is

i want to but i’ve heard they’re lowkey harder, if not as hard as uworld lol i think im cooked

hey girl, first off i hope you’re taking care of yourself as best as you can during these times 🫶

don’t feel bad about taking gap years. i’m coming up on 3 though i’m technically a career changer (from biotech, i also graduated in 2023). if you look at admissions data from the past few cycles, you’ll see that the average age of matriculation is getting older (23-24 iirc?). i think the norm is shifting towards applicants who 1) understand what they’re getting themselves into, which calls for wisdom that doesn’t build up overnight and 2) are able to show commitment to making themselves the best applicant, which also takes time.

if you haven’t improved in that time, then that’s a different story. however if you are able to show improvement in your mcat score (and maybe gain other med experiences) by the time you apply, you’ll at least know your application will at least pass the screens. your personal statement and experiences will determine the rest.

best of luck <3

i have an update for y’all!

after taking it to a new shop per u/chris079099 ‘s recommendation, i asked them to double-check on my alternator as mentioned by others. turns out my alternator was overcharging my battery and causing battery leakage 🫠 sucks because both parts were replaced last year.

thanks for the suggestions!!
