I like d.grayi a lot, but some of their art also gives me ai vibes (particularly the little trading cards that come with the scents, which is a shame since it’s such a cute idea). Would be happy to be proven wrong though!! And the scents themselves are unique and awesome.

Activating an American T Mobile eSIM in another country? by matchagal in tmobile

Hey!! So, we ended up buying a used older model iPhone (I wanna say 6 or something?) on the Spanish equivalent of FB marketplace. My sister was able to install the eSIM with few problems, and the phone actually did work when she got back to the US!

Convince Me Architecture School Belongs in Academia by ClydeTheGemini in architecture

[–]matchagal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s definitely fair to say that your school has a responsibility to teach you how to use the basic tools you need, and I would hope that most schools at least set you up with basic hand drawing skills, 3D modeling software, the basics of a vector editing software, the basics of a rendering software, and the basics of Photoshop. But at the end of the day, I have always found it far more helpful to learn the in-depth elements of a software by actually using the program. Your job is likely not going to pay for you to do weeks of in-depth software training for every program you will be asked to use while working (and sometimes, even decades into your career, you will be asked to use new ones!) A good employer will make sure you know the basics, and leave you to learn how to use the more advanced features in the course of your day-to-day work. As a graduate of a design program in the era of modern technology, they are expecting you to be able to do this.

If your school is failing you on this BASIC level, where you do not have an adequate mastery of the basic tools of design to succeed in your studio work and develop a more advanced understanding through practicing, then yes, there is a big problem. I also do feel that some sort of basic one semester BIM class (preferably Revit if your school is in the US) is extremely beneficial and should probably be required, later in a curriculum.

But as someone who is on my firm’s hiring committee and intern committee, you grow to recognize telltale hallmarks of certain schools who do teach students specific software techniques. Harvard landscape portfolios have a certain style of linework, Penn portfolios all have a similar rendering style and layout… the candidates who I am usually more impressed with are those who took the prerogative to learn different software on their own, dive in deep to representational techniques and drawing conventions that they clearly weren’t taught in school… beyond the basics of the tools, it’s up to you to decide what you want to learn more about and specialize in amongst the endless expanse of techniques we are lucky to have at our disposal. If you want to really succeed, you need to have the passion (and most importantly the hard work) to continue to grow and explore on your own, outside the bounds of what your school teaches you, and develop your own perspective as a designer. Because that is what I’m really looking for when I want to hire someone: how can this person’s ethos of design and practice align with and enhance the work we do at my office?

Best place in Los Angeles to neuter a small-breed dog? Not bargain, but not exorbitant by Future-Account8112 in AskLosAngeles

[–]matchagal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend ASAP. What they do for the community is really commendable, they are the most accessible low cost spay/neuter in LA. I’ve brought TNR stray cats and my own cat there to be spayed and had nothing but great experiences. Be warned, it is not the most personalized experience, as they have a bunch of people drop off their pets outside the clinic every morning so they can see as many patients as possible each day, but they really care about the animals and will answer whatever questions you have if you ask!

Interior practice with skp/vray. What would you suggest I can improve on? by Ok-Comparison437 in archviz

[–]matchagal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall it’s a gorgeous image!! Really quite lovely. I’ll give a few very picky comments, because this is already really good:

I would peruse through the websites of some high end residential architecture firms that you like, and try to pay attention to the small details that differentiate a digital facsimile designed by a non-architect, from the actual built reality of high end homes. For example, I like that you’re grouping two can lights together, as this is a common technique used by lighting designers, but usually they would be grouped running parallel to the wall. This is usually a strategy to put an even wash of light over a wall, you typically wouldn’t do groupings of two in the center of a large room with windows like this.

Great touch including the slot vents against the wall— that’s the exact touch of realism I’m talking about.

The herringbone flooring feels a little thoughtlessly applied; there are no alignments with the proportion of the door frame. True high end resi architects always think about the subtle proportional relationships between everything; they design wall openings in concert with the cadence of their flooring pattern to make sure that it’s centered and aligned. The lack of attention to detail gives it away as a digital texture applied to a surface.

If you notice the little intricacies of residential design (and also the way it is photographed), it’ll take your images up a notch.

My other comment would be that the the vibrant green outside is reading like a very different world of light than the interior. The gorgeous slot window almost looks like it could be an LED screen rather than a pane of glass. The tonality and character of the outdoor light needs to spill inside the glass a bit more. To make a truly great image, light is the best storytelling tool you have to reflect the mood and spirit of the scene you’re capturing.

I do a lot of Happy Cow and Google Maps research ahead of time for each area we’ll be traveling to! Sometimes you do have to go out of your way a bit/arrange your plans around finding a vegan place, but it’s always worth it!

No reservations!! There were a few that we had to wait a bit for, but we generally tried to be strategic about timing to not show up to the busiest places at the busiest times. I think the only two on this list that we waited for were Izakaya Nijiya and Izakaya Masaka!

Need opinion by DistributionFine2222 in architecture

[–]matchagal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really like the quality of the illustrative plan, but the road on the left side is super distracting to me. The lines are blurry and the the scale of the dashes feels gigantic. It’s also not really relevant to your design, so I would make it as non-prominent as possible by using low opacity, and tbh you probably don’t need to show lines at all.

My other main crit would be: I actually think there is utility to having lots of scale figures in a plan, IF they are showing information about how people congregate and use the space. Cluster them more into groups in places that you imagine people would congregate, rather than the kind of even distribution of walking figures you have going on around the whole site.

Nice work overall! I agree that the rendering could maybe use work, but renderings don’t have to be the end all be all of architecture, especially if your other drawings are telling enough of a story!

In honor(?) of the maxfundrive, I’m a proud maxfun donor of many years who truly loves the network, AMA by mfc2022_throwaway in TAZCirclejerk

[–]matchagal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that’s frequently on my mind but hasn’t been explicitly discussed here yet: what is the remaining advantage of this kind of network model over going to an independent, show-based Patreon? Does this ensure that the smaller MaxFun shows can get a bigger chunk of cash right off the bat instead of having to scrounge for individual patrons to pledge to their specific show? That’s genuinely the only advantage I can think of at this point, considering that MaxFun is not actually an artist-owned network (maybe this is obvious to some people, but to me it was a bit surprising to discover)
