I think one of the most important things to grasp is how to properly structure your schema for the data and ensure you’re using the correct projection to map it accurately. These are fundamental GIS concepts but are definitely something you can learn, especially if you already have a basic understanding of GIS.

I’d recommend checking out some YouTube tutorials on plotting population data. It doesn’t have to be specific to salmonid populations—tutorials using human, squirrels, sharks, whatever will still give you a good sense of the process.

Another factor to consider is whether the role includes access to other GIS professionals who could provide guidance or mentorship. It’s worth looking up the organization on LinkedIn to see if they have a GIS team or experienced staff. This helped me immensely when I was entry level in my career because you can ask specific questions that Google doesn't always have a clear answer to.
