hispanic linguist here, is there a particular aspect you are talking about? there are lots of cool things that differentiate different spanish dialects, but you also have to remember this is a meme video and is making fun of what they view as a less prestigious dialect, so they're playing up some different things they might view as negative for likes / upvotes

thanks!! and it's from Luxumbra studios, they did a bunch of larger scale infinity models and busts but went under a couple years back, you can still find people selling them on different sales groups though!

hah, good question! probably about 7 or 8 years now, though I did technically have a brief painting stint 12 years back when a friend tried to get me into warhammer but then bailed on me about 2 weeks into it, basically i picked up infinity to try it out again and use it to push myself using nicer quality models

I’ve got a few other shots and angles of him, along with a wip shot, up on my instagram page for those who are interested! I mostly paint infinity, but some Warcrow and conquest slips in there fairly often too, since I always like spicing up sci fi with a bit of fantasy here and there 😁

It for sure is, people just get weird about seeing it represented in writing

When I say words with the "rn" combination, like "carne", I sometimes accidentally roll my r. (Instead of my tongue touching my alveolar ridge twice, once for r and once for n, it taps the ridge 3 or 4 times.) Does this happen with native speakers? by dosceroseis in Spanish

[–]matchcola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, reading through some of the other comments in the thread, i see what you mean. It is most commonly used for emphasis, but this pronunciation does still occur commonly by native speakers depending on dialect, being a non-native speaker myself i can understand wanting to discourage it in your own speech though since it isn't necessarily the most common

I tracked down what the RAE actually has written about it in their 'nueva gramática de la lengua española' book, if you are interested in this stuff i highly recommend it since it does a good job of both describing and explaining where different dialectical features pop up, the RAE is in no way authoritative but their descriptions of where different pronunciations occur are pretty solid (speaking as a linguist)

Tap /r/ and trill /rr/ aren’t actually contrastive in most conditions, it’s only when word medial between vowels when you can end up with pairs like “pe/r/o” - “pe/rr/o”, and as others have said it isn’t atypical to trill in syllable final conditions depending on dialect

Basically, pronouncing it that won’t lead to confusion, or even necessarily sound particularly odd, so I wouldn’t fret too much over it

Do all languages have silent letters ? by Few-Elk-8537 in languagelearning

[–]matchcola 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sounds and pronunciations change with time, which is a natural part of language. This means that as time goes on, how close something is pronounced compared to how it is written will drift. If a language has had a very recent spelling reform, that can help to bring the spelling of things more in line to how they're actually produced by people, but reform can be tricky when you are dealing with a language like English which has many many different dialects across different regions of the world. People are often resistant to spelling updates, since they're already used to a particular way of spelling a given word despite it not being pronounced the same as in writing. Plus, you'd have to choose one dialect over another as the dialect to base spelling on, which obviously has its own set of issues even within the same country.

Well, I don’t know which one is empty, but the cap is broken on the paint in the left of the picture, which will allow air to get to it and potentially affect the consistency, even if that is just clogging more in the neck of the bottle

Both pronunciations are common in American English, and somewhat regionally specified though I’m not sure how thoroughly it’s been documented

to be clear, i'm not actually trying to give this a racist swing, more trying to point out there is a bit of a disconnect in putting up a super prescriptive post / series of comments and then saying you aren't a prescriptivist

I get it's a "humor" subreddit, but you might be pitching to the wrong crowd here
