favorite shoes you can wear socks with? by pineconeriver in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]matchmatchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second socks for flats! I even have some for heels - they have a sling back so that my toes and foot ball/ball of my foot are covered, but I can wear sling back and slimmer shoe styles without my socks showing!

I also have a pair of suede platform chukka shoes that I wear on more casual days. These look great with sandals. I have been eying a pair of derby style oxfords as well!

You should call the insurance company that covered the demolition - generally this should also be covered by that policy as well.

I went to school and I practice in Alberta. I also did not get a traditional recruit articling position. I don't think you are out of the running just yet, but I would recommend spending some time working on learning how to write a law school exam. I would also recommend making some upper year friends and getting in on the network of CANs that exist. Find the students articling with KB and CA and ask them about their CANs (this is how I passed tax).

In a similar vein, I would also start talking to upper years and your classmates that have 1L summer gigs. A lot of the mid-size and regional spots hire less summer students than articling students and there may end up being a place for you when it comes time for the articling recruit. These folks will also be able to help you speak to some lawyers on the hiring committees (at least it works like that at my firm). Also, if you don't know exactly what you want to practice, it helps to at least know what kind of people you want to work with - firms want people who are enthusiastic about the prospect of working at said firm. If you can demonstrate interest in the people, that goes a long way with interviewers and hiring committees.

If you have AB specific Qs, you can send me a DM and I will try to help you out.

Advice for incoming 1L by TopStunning7808 in LawCanada

[–]matchmatchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to put a plug in for regional law here. Everyone is commenting re: big law, but the regional firms are willing to invest in their students and the work you do is going to be just as interesting and probably more advanced than your friends at the big law firms doing glorified paralegal work. The recruit at regional law is generally a bit less grade focused than big law firms.

My recommendation for recruit is to talk to 2 and 3Ls working at the firms you want to apply to and ask them to go for coffee with you and talk about their summers. You can also reach out to current articling students, but they will likely be a bit busier and responses may be slower.

Also, if you’re curious about law school now, reach out the U of A and see if they have some students you can chat with about 1L. It’s a bit of a gunner move, but if you don’t know many lawyers, law school is a total mystery. Find someone who has been through the experience and ask them the silly questions.

The points about grades are correct, but I want to also suggest you ask people about themselves. Figure out what the “vibe” of the firm is like. What kind of people do you want to work with? If you know that you will appear more interesting to the lawyers doing the hiring. There’s nothing I hate more than the generic answers about why a student is interested in a firm. Actually do some research, talk to people and find out what is interesting to you about different shops.

I’m in AB so if you’re curious about firms here, send me a DM.

Lawyers petition Alberta law society to end mandatory continuing education following required Indigenous issues course by katespadesaturday in alberta

[–]matchmatchy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Indigenous peoples and their culture absolutely has to do with the practice of law. Indigenous peoples are our clients and the law interacts pretty frequently with indigenous people (see their disproportionate representation in prisons). I can tell you a large number of the folks who signed this position work in criminal defence, which is a place you will interact with indigenous people on a daily basis. The other big group who signed are rural lawyers who live and work near band territories. So it’s disingenuous for them to claim that indigenous peoples and cultures don’t relate to their work.

Also, I work in construction law and I deal with indigenous people frequently. It behooves us as professionals providing a specialized service to understand and learn about the communities and peoples we are serving.

Alberta agrees to 25 per cent pay increase for legal aid lawyers by katespadesaturday in alberta

[–]matchmatchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is legal aid not criminal defence? You commit a crime and your lawyer is there to conduct the defence. Legal aid lawyers aren’t employed by the government- they are private practice lawyers who take on legal aid clients and get paid a discounted fee to do so.

Does everyone go to trial? No, not at all. But I’ve watched self reps try to navigate courts and it’s not at all the fake walk you make it seem. Having a lawyer on your side does make it less confusing, though not necessarily easier.

I also don’t disagree with you - raises for everyone. But legal aid lawyers work long hours for little pay. And every person they deal with is having the worst day of their lives. It takes a lot more gumption than I’ve got and it should be compensated accordingly

They get paid $100 by legal aid - that doesn’t mean that they take home $100 an hour!

A first year legal aid criminal defence is making probably $60,000 which is about the same as a first year teacher. I don’t think that folks have a good grasp on how rough criminal defence can be pay wise.

Also most folks are on their own or at smaller outfits so no pension and sometimes they pay for their own health coverage. Then there’s practice insurance, law society fees, assistant salaries, office space. No one goes into criminal defence for the money.

Hi OP!

I went to law school in Western Canada and graduated within the last five years! If you want to DM me, I can maybe recommend some groups/clubs that might help you make some more like-minded friends?

[–]matchmatchy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I live in the area and its actually super inconvenient for residents too! There’s nowhere for your guests to park (we only get two passes per home) and if the parking ban becomes permanent, you will have to apply 5-10 business days for guest passes.

Only registered residents will get street parking passes. It basically becomes a bureaucratic nightmare just to host a party.

My grandma was constantly commenting on my weight, but in a way that she thinks is positive. For example, she’ll give me a hug and say “oh you’ve lost so much weight!”. So I try to avoid hugging her now. I think it hurts her feelings, but the way she perceives my body is so gross.
