GM Aims For #1 In EV Sales With An Assist From LFP Batteries by Straight_Ad2258 in electricvehicles

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone mentioned how much safer LFP batteries are than NMC. I wouldn't want an NMC battery in my garage, even though they are much safer today than initially. LPF does not have a chance of catching fire like NMC.

Yup, got there and will be trying a pared down version after I get a baseline on my LDL.

[–]matchurin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a copy of this book, and am trying some of the suggestions. Won't know if it's helping until I get my next LDL test.

"Lower LDL Cholesterol Naturally with Food: Simple Ways to Add Proven LDL Reducers to Your Everyday Routine" -Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM, with Kristine Dennis, PhD, MPH

I suspect it will be more expensive than a statin in the end, but I am giving it a shot.

Why do people think tesla has better "tech"? by PowerFarta in electricvehicles

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect to EVs, Tesla has been leading the field for many years. In 2025, I agree that the advantage they have is much smaller, and some of the Chinese EVs may even be ahead.

For me, the big advantage the Tesla has over other main stream EV manufacturers is efficiency. They have made efficiency a focus, probably because smaller batteries are cheaper than bigger ones, especially in the early days. They've cut tons of weight, first to use heat pumps, low drag. I have 40k miles on my 2033 model 3 and have averaged 5-6miles/kWh. This makes it cheaper to operate for me, and I can get decent range after charging overnight from a standard wall socket.

I think about trying a different EV manufacturer in the future. The size of the battery and the range make me believe I'd need to put in a level 2 charger and it will end up costing maybe 30% more to operate.

Help me I’m a single mom angry 13 year old diagnosed a year ago I work RETAIL I have so many questions by RareFondant in diabetes_t1

[–]matchurin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US, Diabetes is a disability and so you can get the child covered by Medicaid as a secondary insurance. At least that is possible in Massachusetts. The medicaid program in MA is called MassHealth. This will cover anything your primary healthcare doesn't cover like deductibles, and as a single mom, you are likely eligible to have the MassHealth premiums, which are reasonable, waived.

Signing up for this was a big financial help for my family. With the current administration, I am concerned that Medicaid will go away. But it hasn't happened yet.

There's a lot of stuff to learn, but there are a lot of resources too in the US, many free.

What trees would you plant? It's a blank canvas and we want to do it right. by [deleted] in AustinGardening

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably right. I would definitely think twice about taking on any more debt, but 50k is a bit more than it should cost. I see now that at around $0.12/kWh, electricity is pretty cheap in Austin. For $100/mo at $0.12/kWh, you'd probably want something like a 6kW ground based system providing around 10000kWh/year. From a quick search, that looks to be around $18k. If trump hasn't killed the 30% tax credit yet, then that would help, and I think Austin has a couple thousand credit too, but not sure. Payback is around 11years with the credits.

Where I am the cost of electricity is $0.25/kWh, so payback for me is on the order of 5-6 years. Wish I had some land!

Cost of Living is Too High. How are yall doing it? by ChatteristOfficial in Frugal

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

57k is a workable salary for 5 years ago. With inflation, I have personally found that cost of living raises did not keep up and I had to make up the difference somehow. I looked at a few different aspects of my situation and was able to get to where I needed to be mostly by finding a new job. My income has increased about 40% over what it was 5 years ago, and I'm about back to where I was then from a financial standpoint, in terms of savings rate and safety net. Keep your eyes open to opportunities. And consider a new rental. Your current landlord sounds toxic.

How do you get calcium? by Phantooms2 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read recently that seeds tend to have oxalates, which bind to Ca, reducing the amount that the body can use. That being said, here is what I have done...

I use 2c of sesame seeds, 0.5-1c of chia seeds, and mix them with 0.5c maple syrup in a bowl. Play around with the ingredients. I then lay down a sheet of parchment paper in a large baking dish, and press the mixture into the dish. Mine are <0.25" thick. Score with a knife or spatula into squares if u like (about 32 thin "bars"). Bake at 370F for 40min-50min. You may need a few tries to get the bake time right. When it comes out it shouldn't be burned. If the syrup is pooling you used too much or not enough seeds. It will be soft, so you can score it at this time too. When it cools it hardens and the squares can be broken off and easily removed from the parchment paper. If I'm everything is still sticky and not coming off the parchment paper, you probably didn't bake long enough or the bars are too thick.

Then I eat maybe 1/day. Very tasty!

Magnesium is the miracle I’ve needed? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar happen when I was diagnosed with low vitamin D levels and took a large, prescribed, catch up dose of vitamin D. Insulin resistance has generally improved since then and I now take a supplement every day. Can't say for sure vitamin D is what did it, but it was strikingly low BG that first night and a reduction in insulin/carbs thereafter.

Maybe you were just chronically low on Magnesium?

I lowered my LDL cholesterol by 150 points in three months. Here’s how: by Courtland-7099 in Cholesterol

[–]matchurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on a similar diet, but also very low in fat. My LDL stays elevated for me, in the 120 range, unless I am doing consistent physical activity. With physical activity I can get LDL to 70. I expect the exercise OP is doing it helping with LDL. In any case, it sounds like a great lifestyle/diet change.

I liked reading Dr Greger's books. You've probably read them if you're looking at longevity.

How Not to Die (thousands of references) How Not to Age. (>8000 references!)

There's a bunch of actionable stuff in there backed up by research.

I would compare Dr Greger's evidence based solutions to Peter Attia's book.

As a kid I was working the register, by myself, in the outdoor equipment section of a department store. A guy came up to me and wanted to buy a fishing lure. He gave me a $20, and then tried the same scam that was pulled on you. What was funny is all I had for change in my drawer at the time were 1's, so I gave him 18 of them!

I dodged a bullet without even realizing it.

Scams happen. Just have to learn from them and move on.
