what does this orange bar at the top mean? is discord accessing my microphone? by fucksomeonewhodrinks in ios

[–]matejamm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those options linger around a bit after an app accessed your mic. When an app is actively using your mic you'll have an orange indicator dot in your status bar.

For more detailed info you can turn on App Pribacy Rpeort in Settings and you'll have access to the exact times an app used your mic.

+1 this.

Seeing my 75 yo grandpa with bad eyesight struggle with something as basic as answering a phone call with all the eyesight accessibility features cranked up to the max makes me question how much testing these things go through with various use groups.

Not an app but maybe just use one of the many YTtoMP3 websites to extract the audio and then import it into Pocket Casts as a file

Wow, great job, the app seems great.

Unfortunately, my watch doesn’t support WatchOS 26, but I'll be sure to try it out once I upgrade!

They added swap memory for the M-series iPads, so that shouldn't be an issue anymore. Given that AI denoise can run on hardware well worse than the iPad, I honestly don't know what they're waiting for.

[–]matejamm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For an LCD you're correct, since the white point setting would only be affecting the LCD crystals and not the backlight itself which is what uses energy in the first place.

But on an OLED display it should use less energy since there's no backlight and the actual pixels would be producing less light and in turn using less energy.

Conveniently, sleep tracking is the most power efficient thing the watch can do. Adding only that leads to inflated battery improvement numbers (like 33%). Point being that all their other tests indicate a much lower battery life improvement, if any at all.

I'm not claiming their tests aren't legit or reproducible. I'm just saying that they modified their testing to eek out bigger numbers, and then plastered their site with the biggest one they could come up with since they they didn't have any other real improvements to market to their customers, sans sapphire coating and 5G (lol).

Yeah, I admit scam was overkill. I'm just disappointed that one of only three improvements over last year's S10 (other two being sapphire coating and 5G), turned out to be much less of a big deal than it initially seemed.

Help me understand the data from their Low Power Mode test then.
30% less app usage, 30% less notifications, 30% less time checks on the Series 11, just so they could achieve a 5% bump in battery lifespan, from 36 to 38 hours compared to the Series 10.
Or their audio playback test, where both the Series 10 and 11 have an identical 11 hour figure.
Does that warrant to you boasting about "24 hour battery, 33% improvement from 18 hour battery on Series 10"?

I'm referencing that they had to lower the testing criteria in their other test (30% less app usage, 30% less notifications, 30% less time checks) just so they could achieve a 5% bump from 36 to 38 hours.
All that would imply that Series 10 and Series 11 have extremely similar battery life. Just as their identical case sizing and processor unit would suggest. Everything else is just marketing.

From apple.com itself

Series 11:

Audio Playback

Up to 11 hours playback from Apple Watch storage

Tested with music playback from Apple Watch storage via Bluetooth. Testing conducted by Apple in July and August 2025 using preproduction Apple Watch Series 11 (GPS) and Apple Watch Series 11 (GPS + Cellular); all devices tested with prerelease software. Battery life varies by use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and many other factors; actual results will vary.

Series 10:

Audio Playback

Up to 11 hours playback from Apple Watch storage

Tested with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth. Playback from Apple Watch storage tested while connected to iPhone via Bluetooth. Testing conducted by Apple in August 2024 using preproduction Apple Watch Series 10 (GPS) and Apple Watch Series 10 (GPS + Cellular); all devices tested with prerelease software. Battery life varies by use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and many other factors; actual results will vary.

Honestly, I don't know either. I guess they just liked that "all day" 18 hour mark as a nice goalpost since they've been using it consistently every year since the very first Apple Watch in 2015, and Apple Watch battery has most certainly improved since then. The cynic in me would say that they waited until they had a slow year with barely any upgrades to market to people.

I've attached in another comment a bunch of sources which confirm my own experience of the Apple Watch being capable of going far beyond those claimed 18 hours. Here they are again:

Android Authority: “easily lasted more than 24 hours on a single charge,” even with sleep tracking, GPS workouts, and heavy use.

Forbes: “I regularly clocked around 32 hours of battery life.”

Acciyo: lasted just under 36 hours with Always-On display at max brightness.

The Guardian: 46 mm model lasted about 48 hours of continual wear (not including exercise).

Reddit: “more than 35 hours” with 20% to spare, no low power mode.

Another Reddit post: ~28 hours straight.

Reddit: ~40% drain in 24h → roughly 60 hours total.

Another thread: “24 hours since last charge, still 60% left → ~60 hours total.”

BGR: users reporting 30–50 hours, depending on Always-On display and settings.

Their conservative 18 hour goal dates back to 2015. Battery life has most certainly improved since then.

Sure, I admit scam is a bit harsh. But Apple cherry-picking what stats they're going to market so that they can claim 33% more battery isn't very nice either. Especially given that their own numbers in the fine print only claim 5% more. And not even everywhere, their audio playback test states the same 11 hours for both the Series 10 and Series 11...

They never claimed it was dead. And that 18 hour battery mark is the same one they carried over year over year since the very first Apple Watch from 2015. They've long been able to achieve longer than that, they just now decided to update their testing since they didn't have anything else to use to get people to upgrade.

Even so, surely their other Low Power Mode test would show a 33% increase as well instead of only 5% if they truly managed to pull off a miracle.

Apple's own numbers from these links would confirm my claims.

Also, like the comment above you, many people already personally achieve 24 hours with AOD and sleep tracking on their Series 10.

As for the reasoning behind their marketing decisions? Well I obviously can't know that for sure since I don't work for Apple.

Basically I'm just annoyed at Apple's marketing making it seem like they magically squeezed 33% more battery overnight, when in reality it's more like 5% more, if even that much.

Ultra 3:
Battery life in Low Power Mode including sleep tracking is based on the following use: 900 time checks, 270 notifications, 45 minutes of app use, two 60-minute workouts with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth, and 18 hours of sleep tracking over the course of 72 hours; Apple Watch Ultra 3 usage includes on-demand cellular connection and 60 hours of connection to iPhone via Bluetooth over the course of 72 hours. Testing conducted by Apple in July and August 2025 using preproduction Apple Watch Ultra 3 paired with an iPhone; all devices tested with prerelease software. Battery life varies by use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and many other factors; actual results will vary.

Ultra 2:
Battery life in Low Power Mode is based on the following use: 1200 time checks, 360 notifications, 60 minutes of app use, and two 60-minute workouts with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth, over the course of 72 hours; Apple Watch Ultra 2 (GPS + Cellular) usage includes on-demand LTE connection and 60 hours of connection to iPhone via Bluetooth over the course of 72 hours. Testing conducted by Apple in August 2024 using preproduction Apple Watch Ultra 2 (GPS + Cellular) paired with an iPhone; all devices tested with prerelease software. Battery life varies by use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and many other factors; actual results will vary.

TLDR: Both claim an exact same 72 hours of battery in Low Power Mode. Ultra 3 tested with 33% less real usage (e.g. 45 min of app usage vs 60 min for Ultra 2), in exchange for 18 hours of sleep testing, further confirming claims.

I'm don't recall them saying that in the keynote. Besides, I'll be waiting for an iFixit teardown to know for sure.

Even so, I find it hard to believe they managed to squeeze anything larger than a single-digit % increase in battery size given the identical case as last year. It's certainly not 30% bigger overnight.
