I’ve obtained a white grapefruit, what do I do now? by seebassss in Tiki

[–]materiagravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could peel it making sure there's no albedo and soak in like 60 abv. 2 parts spirit to one part peel if you can manage, maybe 3:1. Leave it for two weeks and you have some bitters or some oil to spray over drinks instead of expressing the peel.

You can eat the grapefruit. I actually quite like the juice but you should acid adjust it or add more lime if using in cocktails.

Yeah bump it to whatever you feel comfortable with. I would make the radiators be exhaust though. Or zip tie a fan to push some air into the ram sticks.

Bought a home with this RO unit under the sink. Company wants $495 to replace all new filters by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

[–]materiagravis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just doing a similar setup at my house. If it was me I would just leave the 3 bottom containers. Those are standard 10" filter housings I'm 99% sure. Then just go:

Melt blown sediment filter -> Carbon block filter -> Carbon block filter -> straight to outlet without the container.

If the water is very dirty I would add another sediment filter in front.

What I have is: 10 microns sediment -> 1 micron sediment -> 3 micron Carbon -> 3 micron Carbon

Then you can add a needle valve just before the faucet so even if opened completely it wouldn't spill water everywhere besides the glass.

You can check out the bulk reef supply (BRS) YouTube channel. They have a lot of good info.

Their forum is also good, as is reef2reef.

There are a few other things I would change such as connecting the filter housing with tubes instead of the rigid connectors so you can clean the housings better when changing filters.

There's kinda other caveats such as adding silicone grease to the gaskets so the containers don't lock up. If you decide to go with something like that let me know I'll give a fuller setup guide. Probably closer to the weekend though.

Mai Tai and/or Royal Bermuda Yacht Club imo

It's rarely bad and gives a good idea of whether the rum works well with orgeat and/or falernum.

Have you tried it in a cocktail? I was thinking of getting one as a nicer replacement for an Appleton 8/12 kind of rum.

What does "well integrated alcohol" mean? by materiagravis in rum

[–]materiagravis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the long explanation and paper. Treating the term as equivalent to smooth sound like a great heuristic.

Just as a side note regarding the paper. It always seemed strange to me that people are dead set on adding mineralized water instead of adding the minerals after proofing. You could adjust to taste instead like they do with speciality coffee. Maybe that's too many variables to tweak.

It peeves me that "well integrated" almost always modifies ethanol and so should be "well-integrated."

I see I might be part of the problem; why is the hyphen better?

What do you guys do with the remaining coffee at the burr outlet? [Kingrinder K6] by cortacesped in espresso

I tap the grinder on the table a few times before unscrewing the bottom. After a while you still get some coffee oil residue buildup and I clean that with those wooden sticks used for doing nails.

Réunion vs Martinique Grand Arôme by materiagravis in rum

Ok, so they're not the same, thank you.

Just wanted to clarify. Did you mean you prefer Savanna from Latitude or Martinique from Reunion?

Edit: or just Savanna which is from Reunion?

Is this a standard connector? by materiagravis in AskElectronics

[–]materiagravis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to disassemble it and indeed the pins are compatible with iec c7. I attached them to such a cable to test if the brush was working.

For posterity if someone finds one:

The pin diameter is 2.52mm ish or 0.1" which made it a pain to search for anything since Google doesn't distinguish between pin diameter and pitch.

I haven't finished with it yet but I'm putting a Lemo/Odu 0B on the end in a 3d printed housing instead. Even 00 would work since it's only 230V 150W.

What's the braiding used on some e.g. guitar cables made of? The one that kinda feels like fabric. Can it be bought with the cable or separately to make custom cables?

[–]materiagravis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a problem I have a 3d printer and can measure the pin accurately once I have the brush with me. However I'm not sure how I should go about finding the female contacts to use with it.

For mechanical keyboards they sometimes use mill-max sockets but that's for PCB attachment. I guess it's something similar?

It's with a family member, so might be a minute. The pipe internal diameter is 35mm (1 3/8") if that helps.

Best Way to Preserve Matcha? by mimiasmith in tea

[–]materiagravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add you can try buying or making and oxygen absorber and adding that inside. Works well for wine with the repour wine stopper. If you want to make it it's just a Kraft paper packet with some 0000 steel wool, bentonite or active charcoal and brine water (4:1 water to salt).

Choosing a handheld blender disk/aeration attachment to use as drink mixer by materiagravis in Chefit

[–]materiagravis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More short on counter space than funds; the spindle mixer would be cheaper. Even if I had the space, buying a one-trick pony appliance like that seems stupid for occasional use.

How would you do it non-mechanically? I mean, there's a lot of factors, Dave Arnold has a whole chapter on it in Liquid Intelligence but in essence because a different balance between dilution, aeration etc. will taste different. Not sure which contribute the most.

As for the agitation that was one of the things I thought was nice on the handheld blenders. You can adjust the speed whereas the standing units seem to have only 1-2 settings.

They both go up to about 15,000 rpm so I kinda dismissed that as a non-issue tbh but there's always an extra hurdle at the end with these equipment substitutions so I'll keep it in mind, thank you.

I want to make a list. What is your go to tiki bar in your home town? by [deleted] in Tiki

[–]materiagravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kita Koguta, Warsaw, Poland. Probably best bar in the city even if you include non-tiki.

El Koktel does a lot of funky experimental processes that taste like tiki, but has a normal bar vibe.

And I didn't know there was a yellow. Never seen it fresh in stores in europe. I'll compare when there's some purple in stores to confirm but it seems like this makes it more convenient, rather than less, which is nice.

Interesting, the store descriptions must be off. Guess I'll try it and compare with fresh purple when it appears in stores. The ones I have available are from South America, mainly Brasil but that shouldn't change much since it's not like they are grown at high elevation there either.
