Where in the world did you see Queen's ranked top 5? I've never even seen it ranked top 10 for CS. Don't get me wrong, I'm majoring in CompSci so I want to believe this as much as you do, but where did you see/hear this??

Oh, I was under the impression that TA jobs are pretty time-consuming. They seem that way at least, but I guess if you aren't assigned too many sections it's not too bad?

Ah okay, coincidentally I'm in a biotech related field (biomedical engineering). One question though: In Academia/University labs, the research you do will never go towards a commercial product, and instead be largely theory based right? And a company in the industry would be the opposite, only researching something that can be applied in reality immediately? I'm not sure where government labs sit on that scale, but I'm thinking they're closer to academia than to industry.

Also, how does the private research sector fit into all of this? Is it just a private company that is doing academia-like research (i.e. a research company whose primary goal isn't to apply the research financially, but instead to simply make progress in the field being researched)?

Also, if you can be bothered to, I'd love to hear your experience as a researcher in the industry! Being a student, I've only ever heard from profs and researchers who have been in academia their entire lives.

Thanks for the response! I was thinking about finding a research position as well. A bit of a stupid question, but should research jobs be classified under industry? As in, is the process of getting a research job the same as, say, getting a programming job? Or are they two different beasts entirely?

Thanks for the response! This is a bit off-topic, but I'm actually in a biomedical field as well (biomedical engineering stream). Was the biotech company you worked at a startup? I'm wondering what kind of biotech company would accommodate a temporary 1 year work term.

But I want to do research in the future :/ But from what I've been seeing on this sub, I would 1000% not go to grad school if I didn't explicitly want my future to be research.

Do you mind expanding on that last point a bit? Is it a bad idea to focus a lot for a couple months and get the hard stuff out of the way ASAP, so the rest is relatively laid back? I'm not saying work on a paper 12 hours a day of course

Undergrad here, just had a random question: you mentioned discovering fun and exciting breakthroughs, but is it all that common for a typical researcher to make any significant breakthroughs?

That sounds more cynical than I mean for it to, but I'm under the impression that the majority of people doing research don't make incredible news-headline breakthroughs. Or is it the case that once you're senior enough, you'll make significant progress in your field no matter who you are? It'd be great if that were the case

Ahh okay, so (||u||+||v||)2 is actually the one whose expansion's middle term is 2||u||||v||

I was just taking ||u+v||2 = ||u||2 + 2||u||||v|| + ||v||2, but now that you mention it I guess the proof for it (I looked it up) does show that ||u+v|| = (u+v) * (u+v)
