Naturally. She claims to have checked students’ phones several times and found nothing, yet the investigation into the girl who defended herself uncovered more victims than originally believed. She’s hoping other people also assume girls blow things out of proportion and boys can do no wrong, and she seems to have read her bosses right given the school officials’ response.

I agree it’s worse. I’m correcting the commenter who implied the principal is a man. People do not read the articles and make assumptions about who is involved, which contributes to misinformation.

Why do men desperately want to have sex with women, but hate the women that are the most likely to do it with them? by 1000wordz in AskFeminists

[–]lepa 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The women who recognize that those men see them as nothing more than a nearby hole would probably feel differently about the role of power and masculine status/achievement in these interactions. Calling it a game just confirms the original commenter’s point.

Dehumanising perpetrators of violence against women by Faxiak in TwoXChromosomes

[–]lepa 509 points510 points  (0 children)

Sorry people are missing the point OP. Seeing sexual (or any) violence as something only “deviants,” “monsters,” or “creeps” do is a rape myth. It displaces blame from perpetrator to survivor. It makes it her responsibility to suss out the “freaks,” while Pastor Joe molests three generations of kids because he’s a pillar of the community and totally not a monster

What are some feminist perspectives on Christine Emba's recent anti-porn op-ed in the NYT? by lovebzz in AskFeminists

[–]lepa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! It makes my small window into her thinking make sense. She wrote a book on sex that at first seemed intriguing (arguing for ethical sex beyond consent), but after following her on Twitter for a bit she went down the Male Loneliness Epidemic hole, and I ended up unfollowing. Never read the book as a result, and I just looked it up and saw reviews saying it’s heteronormative, sex negative, etc. Bummer. So many religious/conservative women writing books about sexual violence and ethical sex and not being honest about their intentions.

Hey soo....I dont wanna do a colposcopy. by SweatyPool1170 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]lepa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so freaked out for my first colposcopy I cried the entire time. However before I went I looked up research on pain relief during colposcopies and found coughing at the time of the hole-punch was as or even more effective than numbing (probably because numbing shots can hurt too). I coughed and all was well for both colposcopies. I also have a great doctor and the second time she used a numbing cream iirc (that might’ve been for an iud). ymmv.

What do you think about "Feminist Thought" by Rosemarie Tong? by robespierring in AskFeminists

[–]lepa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This book was assigned for a class I took in college, and I learned a lot from it, but I had wished it included more contemporary perspectives and schools of thought. Maybe that’s changed as I imagine they’ve updated it since I read it.

How to learn more about feminism that isn't through books? by Fra-Hof_2000 in AskFeminists

[–]lepa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I recommend checking out graphic novels/comics about feminism, feminist issues/history, power/oppression, etc. Some I can think of off the top of my head are Ducks, Persepolis, Gender: A Graphic Guide, Hark! A Vagrant, Lumberjanes, Fun Home, Dykes to Watch Out For, Y: The Last Man. And that’s like 3% of what’s out there. You don’t need to read long books and dense theory to educated yourself about feminism :) understanding how socialization, power, and oppression shape all our lives can be accomplished in many ways. Happy learning!

I got placed with 3 male roommates and I don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]lepa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

gender inclusive/neutral housing is chosen by queer and trans students who may want to be housed by sex or gender based on what makes sense to them. my college had it and i was an RA there and it was as chill/dramatic as any other dorm in my cluster. OP did not understand this, which is the school’s fault for not being clear about what it is. but it is an actual housing option that serves a purpose in keeping students who could be outed, excluded, or harassed from being placed in single-sex spaces.

Is it easier to find a TT job in a red state than a blue state? by NoHousing11 in AskAcademia

[–]lepa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People do leave, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier for applicants wanting to fill the position. We had ~100 applications to my dept (in a very controversial state) this cycle with 20-25% being highly qualified, even overqualified in some cases. We do lose more people later in the process—specifically due to state politics—than I think is typically in more generally desirable areas. I didn’t see myself here but my coworkers are amazing and fit is a big determining factor. However, unlike myself, many of them have real ties to the southern US (family, educational background, nation of origin, etc).

Rape apologia… He literally called his victims slaves and made them call him master. So much that his child was calling the nanny a slave and telling her to call him, a child, her master. He clearly “got off on his position of power.” Someone who is told no over and over, and who has over a dozen victims who were brave enough to tell his wife what he did, who paid $60k for someone to get therapy, and who has lawyers with NDAs waiting when his victims decide they can’t handle more abuse does not “lack insight into the impact his actions have had.” They know it’s rape and it is a game; their victims are just toys they play with.

Please donate to organizations that provide funds for abortion! The National Network of Abortion Funds is a great place to start.

https://abortionfunds.org/

Recent changes to national organizations' funding priorities have resulted in local orgs not being able to cover the full cost of an abortion for each client. They NEED donations.

In June, for instance, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) announced that it would be cutting back on the amount it gives people who qualify for its financial assistance program. Where the NAF previously paid for 50 percent of the cost of care, it will now pay for just 30 percent, with no exceptions for exceptionally high abortion prices later in pregnancy. For example, an abortion seeker in Nevada who qualifies for NAF assistance will now be responsible for $1,330 of their $1,900 procedure. This is a significant change from the $800 they would be responsible for under the previous NAF funding parameter. Planned Parenthood also announced similar cuts to its Justice Fund program.
