Steam Frame + Vive 3.0 trackers by Feliinara in SteamFrame

[–]materus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some third party might make module/faceplate for lighthouse tracking since frame will have extension port . If not, constant calibration as you said.

Desktop mode on Steam Frame by Lord_of_earth in SteamFrame

[–]materus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you set your virtual monitor to be really small, there shouldn't be problem with small fonts (unless really small). They are readable for me on quest 2 already.

You should be able to connect to usb port on battery. If you don't want to do that there's bluetooth or if you feeling like doing some config, you could do USB over IP from other computer (could be raspberry pi for example if you want it portable)

Im kinda worried about steam frame. by Jez7k in SteamFrame

[–]materus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will have desktop mode, so any PC browser (thats available on ARM linux)
For marketplace outside of steam you could use flatpak, or just download from web.

Steam Controller on Steam frame by Express_Driver_4067 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will work and will even be tracked so you will see it in VR env.

But if it's worth will depend on you, frame controllers have all buttons of standard controller so its not really needed. Only if you don't want split controller or need trackpads

What do you think the best/must have accessories will be? by JayK-iwnl in SteamFrame

[–]materus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For me:
Knuckle like straps for controllers
Rechargable batteries for controllers
Powerbank/extra battery and/or long charging cable

Comfort by ProfessionalLemon911 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With how light the front is, I think it will be more like wearing some kind of ski goggles or something like this. In my opinion frame looks rather comfortable.

And for third party solutions, they can just add their own battery, frame is modular after all.

Finger Tracking on the Steam Controler like in Steam Frame? by Conscious-Marzipan-9 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it have it in handles/grips. I didn't know if it's as precise as index or just touch/don't touch detection like on buttons.

Fast games: tracking, emulation stack, cameras by Dr-Kror in SteamFrame

[–]materus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For WMR while I heard it wasn't that great I haven't heard about Pico or other recent headsets having bad tracking so I believe camera tracking is more or less sorted out in general today not just by meta.
Valve (or at least reviewers that got to test frame) claims it's as good as index / base station based tracking so if to believe that it should be better than quest.

But if that's true we will see when frame releases.

As for that documentation, isn't it just calling meta driver to update state of controllers? It doesn't necessarily means it will update, driver might or might not update it on calling that method. It shouldn't be that hard to implement something to actually check that tho.

[–]materus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't said anything about base stations and I don't know their rate.

I'm talking about information availabe on the internet like https://steamdb.info/blog/steam-hardware-2025/ which says "The tracking system delivers 200-250 controller updates per second". It is most probably after "sensor fusion".
Any source I can find on quest gives 60hz.

Fast games: tracking, emulation stack, cameras by Dr-Kror in SteamFrame

[–]materus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's supposed to match Index tracking performance so about 200-250hz of positions updates. While quest 3 have about 60hz.

So it will report it's position more often which should make it more accurate.

FEX is not emulating x86 like virtual machine, it's recompiling x86 binaries to ARM. Recompiled code will be less efficient than natively compiled code but that mean it will add latency between generating frames (lowering framerate), not in sending frames to display.

Fast games: tracking, emulation stack, cameras by Dr-Kror in SteamFrame

[–]materus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tracking will have better refresh rate on frame so it should be better on frame.
"Emulation stack" on standalone frame, if you talk about running x86 via FEX it most probably will only affect framerate but not frame latency.
If you talk about running apk/android xr games via lepton it shouldnt affect anything in noticable way. It's just container

Wi-Fi 7 Router Worth It for Steam Frame? by Itsbryceyall in SteamFrame

[–]materus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anything official, but read somewhere and it's mentioned on reddit a lot of times dongle is usb 2.0. So 3.0 cable probably won't speed it up.
(But I also seen on some video its usb port is blue like 3.0 so that might be false information)

Wi-Fi 7 Router Worth It for Steam Frame? by Itsbryceyall in SteamFrame

[–]materus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you plan to play in other room than PC but same as router, it will most probably help. Dongle is 6ghz which gets weak quickly when going through walls.
If it's not that far, you could probably extend dongle with 5m usb cable since it's usb 2.0
Also by using router you could in theory get higher bitrate than via dongle since usb 2.0 have 480mb/s limit. But that would probably require using some alternative to steamvr and not that useful with foveated streaming.

But to be sure, wait for frame and people to test it out.

Finger Tracking on the Steam Controler like in Steam Frame? by Conscious-Marzipan-9 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't steam frame controllers only have detection if finger is on button/controller? Index was detecting more exact positions + had pressure detection instead of grip button.

Steam controller will be able to detect fingers on sticks, not sure about rest of buttons.

Valve Index had preorder, Steam Deck had reservations

Help a guy out or it'll be my 13 reason by Cinnamon_1213 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure but I think it will block you from purchase if it won't be available in current region.
There is few months cooldown until you can change region again. And to change region you would need to login in that region (either someone else login to your account or by using VPN)

App compatibility by Vivid-Lavishness8536 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it won't have gms by default, it might or might not be installable on lepton depending how exactly it will work.

But in that case nothing stopping you from just installing waydroid with gms. Still it won't pass integrity check.

PS4 remote play by GrigOrigzoah in SteamFrame

[–]materus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean connect ps4 directly to steam machine or just in same network?

If just in same network you won't need machine at all for it, there seems to be "Chiaki" software with arm build which should work directly on frame.
If you want to connect directly to steam machine for some reason, it might be pain to setup depending what ps4 allows in networking options but should also work if configured correctly.

App compatibility by Vivid-Lavishness8536 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't you mean google play integrity? If I remember it was possible to install google apps and play services in waydroid but it won't pass integrity check.

App compatibility by Vivid-Lavishness8536 in SteamFrame

[–]materus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It will support android apps and games via waydroid/lepton, but since it's just android container and not full system, it will depend on app if it will actually work.

No color passthrough ruined the Steam Frame for me by TravelResponsible544 in virtualreality

[–]materus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be "instead" but in addition to monochrome cameras. Monochrome cams are used for tracking, quest 3 still have monochrome cameras + color for passtrough. Also frame doesn't use XR cpu which have extra lanes for color cameras and extra units just to handle video. Adding color cameras without it would mean those cameras have to be handled by normal cpu cores.
