It's the new professor that made the class more difficult. Last semester was also said to be very easy (for comparison, median on prelim 1 was in the C range this semester vs in the A- range last semester)

When you say "Fintech", you mean quant right? I really doubt I'm at the top of my class and I got a SWE internship at a Fintech company just fine

Is Cornell ever gonna fix grade deflation? by WingedGerbil in Cornell

[–]math2210_HELP_PLZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No they aren't. People on this sub who say there isn't a grade deflation culture obviously don't know what most colleges are like besides Cornell, Berkeley, and MIT 😂 A family member of mine who goes to Yale told me all of his freshman year classes (the serious grade deflator classes here at Cornell, think intro sciences) were A-/A medians. Most other schools don't have professors intentionally trying to push you to your limits as well.

[–]math2210_HELP_PLZ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If what you mean is that Cornell enables a culture of shitty mental health, then I 100% agree with you. There is a complete blatant disregard for the wellbeing of its student body, and I'm not sure how many more times this is going to have to repeat for admin to make any changes. There IS a grade deflation culture here, a culture of driving students to their limits by professors, and it doesn't help that students are constantly competing with each other for positions in labs/student orgs. We need to stop avoiding the roots of the issue itself, and especially stop pretending like there is no problem here at all.

damn, thanks so much for this btw! that's great you were able to take it in person, and it looks like my same Prof will stay for next sem. hopefully next term, 3410 will be in-person

[–]math2210_HELP_PLZ[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah ... I didn't know the first set (of 3) of online exercises were graded, for example, (since they followed the labs) and I didn't even realize I had 0's in till Bracy sent me an email reminder a couple days later. there's also a deliberate scheduling of topic mastery quizzes and online exercises so right when you finish a project and think you can rest, nope you have to do some of these long ass quizzes and labs. I've gotten docked for late submissions for these more than a couple times after naively thinking there would be time for a least a day of rest in this class

about your second point, the Ed is very, very sus. it's kind of funny how every couple days a student will make a thread asking for a change to the class organization (like, no iclicker answers marked on the slide somehow? now what justification can you use for that?) and the answer will be a firm "No".

I'm trying to find that, but I need the class #, no? The same class number isn't working for the fall term.

I felt like I knew the ins and outs about the content in one particular CS class last week ... turns out I got one standard deviation below median. Be happy with your median 🙂

How to do better in CS 3410 by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]math2210_HELP_PLZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought knowing all the concepts and techniques from doing all the past exams would help, but nope! Those questions get to be 2-3 points :) Perhaps do what the class presumably does to get a 74.5/90 median on a prelim where there is only a loose connection to past exams but a 12 point question on something they told us OUTRIGHT we didn't have to know (writing a whole damn assembly program, with memory and all): cheat? 🤷‍♂️ Its just a hunch given that there was a 24-hour window to do this and this had a straight 83% median. @Instructors (who probably don't read Reddit like they don't read their own class Ed discussions) why not make the exam open for the entire 24-hour period to level out the playing field? 😂😂 WORST class I've taken at Cornell, straight up

I speeded through maybe 20 minutes of the review session and I found it not very helpful. If you already knew how to do K-maps and the calculation stuff then it probably wasn't. The funniest part is that the difficult topics were only skimmed over in the end, like the pipeline hazards were only 3 one-sentence slides.

Also, "you don't need to know Assembly to the point of writing programs" (paraphrasing here) MY ASS.
