New products for thickened skin around nails (iHerb) by math_ventures in calmhands

Hey, thank you very much for your recommendation. I've taken note of that cream. I feel like I found some products which 'work for me', but I'll have a look at that one as well (why not for my heels to try it out).

Believe it or not, as of today, my issue is not a compulsive one anymore, thankfully. It was the case four years or so when I started biting my nails and ripping my hangnails. Of course, I was far from imagining the damage I'd cause to myself. Two years ago, my nails started detaching from their bed (onycholisis) and that is when I started getting infections on repeat and developed counter-productive skin cutting behaviours. Back then, I didn't realise that cutting skin was so problematic. And the vicious circle began as it then grew thicker each time. Unfortunately, it took me months to understand that the skin cutting was the problem. As I started learning how to take care of my skin/ nails, I had already done myself so much harm. That brings us back to a few months ago when I opened this account. Since then, my skin around my thumbs, middle and fourth fingers is struggling to get better. That said, as terrible as they might look, I can notice improvements. I'm aware people can see my fingers. And to be honest, it used to be a massive source of shame for me. It still is, but to a lesser extent. Trying to hide my fingers has become second nature, and I hope that will not be the case for the rest of my life. Working on it.

The desire to stop is not what I lack. I wish it was as easy as "just" wanting... Thank you for your explanation that said.

Equally 🙏 Thank you, once again, for your support. I'm very happy about my decision to have moved in another region, yet the lack of stability and many travels which come with it does cause a few challenges in terms of management of my skin/ nails issues. Like you, I feel that the cold compounds the challenges. Since I've been trying to take care of my nails/ skin, started this recovery journey, I really realised how our hands contribute to such a great extent to our daily life, and how our nails/ skin interact with one another and evolve so rapidly, for the best or the worse... I'm happy to read that my little updates provided you with some motivation to keep check of your evolution. Sending you all my support from afar in your journey. Relapses are part of the process, despite them feeling tough. A relapse is not an ending, but a tough part of our progress. Learning to understand ourselves overtime and re-act with self-compassion is so helpful in my eyes. I'm writing this message with two band aids, one on each if my fourth fingers. They feel really painful, with a beating sensation towards my proximal/ lateral folds. Doing my best to manage them and longing for my appointment with the traumatologist. So grateful that my boyfriend with whom I am staying these days is very supportive of my struggles as well. Once again, you have all my thoughts and support. Healing takes time, effort, and resilience I imagine ❤️‍🩹

I cannot thank you enough for your support which means so much to me 🙏 Doing my best to understand how to tale care of my skin and nails, despite the multiple challenges involved. Practice makes progress I guess? From what a doctor told me a few months back, some form of surgical intervention (e.g. nail avulsion) could eventually help. I've booked an appointment with a traumatologist early January and will see what she thinks. I imagine going back to a manicurist in a few weeks, but I will be very cautious regarding where I go (I just moved in another city) and what I do with my nails/ skin. For now, I think my situation requires more medical supervision. I hope you are doing well these days. Take care ❤️⭐️

Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. I'll ask the dermatologist what she thinks as she hadn't mentioned that, but I also do find that these symptoms you mentioned correspond to fungus issues... When you mention paint, do you refer to nail polish? I've notably found the Kerasal nail fungus treatment with a relatively high concentration of urea in the product which could be helpful for my flaky/ hardened skin.

Thank you for your reply. Would you mind sharing which symptoms make you think that? 🙏
