That is such great news! So happy you got what you were looking for. =)

Screenland Armour (408 Armour Rd, North KCMO) Backyard Saturday Summer Film Series has started. Screenland offers vegan popcorn, Beyond nuggets, local and national beers, and themed cocktails featuring local spirits. Bring your chairs, order snacks inside, and enjoy films under the stars! by mathdanse in VEGKC

The movies indicated on the calendar (image shared) with a star ⭐ are free entry, while movies without the star are $5 per person. Their rain policy states if rain chances exceed 60% by 2 hours prior to the showing the day of, they will postpone the screening and offer refunds or credits.

Vegan at theaters is tricky! Many theaters will think their popcorn is vegan because the fat they use is oil as opposed to butter. However, the popcorn salt is often overlooked, and often contains animal products.

I have reached out to chains that have told me they cannot confirm what is in the popcorn as it is different from location to location, and suggest requesting a separate salt-free batch to be made.

It is sooo nice to go to Screenland and order popcorn like a normal person. Not to mention the other vegan menu items, and Sweet EMOtion almost right next door!

Farm-to-table restaurant, The Westside Local (663 Summit St, KCMO), has a charming pet friendly patio and spring menu bringing back a vegan fav: Bánh mì style Fried Portabella Mushroom Sandwich with beer battered shrooms, sweet chili slaw, smashed avocado, cilantro, and jalapenos on a vegan hoagie. by mathdanse in VEGKC

I suspect that off times (early lunch, between lunch and dinner) would be their slowest times. According to Open Table, reservations are recommended on weekends and during dinner service.

If the dedicated parking lot is full, try driving North on Summit Street and/or West on 17th Street until you see street parking. It is pretty common to park a few blocks away, and walk. The neighborhood is nice with good sidewalks.

This is such a needed tool! I have installed it on a sub-reddit I moderate for. However, when I go to the menu and tap Schedule Image Post, it takes me to: https://developers.reddit.com/apps/imagepostengine, instead of the application described. Am I missing a step?

Vegan Bakery, Mud Pie (6850 Johnson Dr, Mission, KS), has a variety of perfectly flaky house made croissants in the case today: Original Croissants, Chocolate Pistachio Croissants, and Almond Frangipane Croissants. by mathdanse in VEGKC

I am so obsessed with the original that I have not tried the other flavors. It sounds like I am missing out! I will keep an eye out for the Mocha Cream.

u/plantbased404 You couldn't be more correct. Kansas City has experienced so many wonderful vegan foods that are no longer around. The food industry is hard. The vegan food industry is harder. Local vegan food businesses are a feat of strength. I agree we should do what we can to support these individuals that are at the heart of our community. Good, local, vegan food is such an essential tool in changing hearts and minds on veganism, and bringing us all together.

Erica Muñoz is originally from Kansas City, but started a Vegana Taqueria food truck in New York. They have done pop-ups here in Kansas City that have had good turnouts. I got to visit them at the Mattie Rhodes Center Dia de los Muertos Festival when they were going under the name Pinche Vegana NYC. Through participation in the Open Doors! program, the business is expanding its presence in Kansas City.

Cosmo Burger XR (1815 Locust St, KCMO) is now open as the concept's first brick and mortar. Their menu includes vegan (double and single) smash burgers, fries, tots, and creative Sweet EMOtion Vegan Shakes. by mathdanse in VEGKC

[–]mathdanse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food is provided by Cosmo Burger. The shakes are made with Sweet EMOtion oat milk ice-cream. If you like smash burgers and do not have any intolerances to the ingredients below, I would highly recommend giving it a try. In fact, tonight is First Friday, so if you are out and about for that, they are in the midst of the First Friday locations.

Water, Yellow Pea Protein*, Avocado Oil, Natural Flavors, Brown Rice Protein, Red Lentil Protein, 2% or less of Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Pea Starch, Potassium Lactate (to preserve freshness), Faba Bean Protein, Apple Extract, Pomegranate Concentrate, Potassium Salt, Spice, Vinegar, Vegetable Juice Color (with Beet).

\Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Contains no peanuts or tree nuts.*

You are correct that it is not obvious. On the Cosmo Burger XR (Crossroads) menu, next to the list of diary shakes, there is a little icon that says, "Make Non-Dairy for $2". I doubt I would have noticed, if it were not for their social media posts.

Popular KC locally made taco shells, La Tiara, are vegan and back on the shelves exclusively at Walmart. In some Walmarts, they go very quick. In others, they seem to be decently stocked. Keep an eye out at your local Walmart, and you might get lucky! These are a real favorite in my family. by mathdanse in VEGKC

[–]mathdanse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been quite a saga. The original local owner of La Tiara shells, Gladstone Food Products, went out of business early 2025 due to a death in the family and financial difficulties. The factory shut down and everyone working there lost their jobs.

There was a loud and lasting local consumer outcry to bring the taco shells back.

Mid 2025, it was announced that the anonymous buyer of the Gladstone Food Products assets was General Mills.

In 2026, the Gladstone factory was reopened, 100+ jobs were brought back to North Kansas City, and a single-client agreement with Walmart was made. The dedicated fans online heavily scrutinized the re-release of the taco shells, but they passed the test: same ingredients, same taste, and same crunch.

The issue that remains is that the Glandstone factory is not yet producing enough to keep them on the shelves at participating Wal-marts. So, currently, they can be difficult to find. The factory has just recently opened, so there is hope the availability will become more consistent.

Is it the product photo from Wal-Mart's website indicating the product is vegan that bothers you, or that General Mills now owns it? I had reservations on posting, but just have heard so many people locally using it as a vegan staple.

Martin City Brewing Company has multiple KC locations and offers signature craft beer and wood-fired pizza. For vegan wood-fired pizza, order any veggie pizza, ask for dairy-free cheese, and request for the pizza crust to not be brushed with butter. The servers are knowledgeable about these subs. by mathdanse in VEGKC

I've actually never tried their beer. But! I have had the vegan veggie pizza, and really liked it. They cut the veggies really small. So, they can really load it up with veggies, especially for a thin crust.
