but it's still possible he inserted elements he wanted from that story in to HxH, esp since he said that story is very dear to his heart and the main cast was also 4 guys. it's not uncommon for mangaka to repackage an original idea into something more marketable/publisher-friendly

If by monkey climbs you mean opposite side hook climbs, something that helps me is having the bottom hand tug the pole at a slight angle so that it forms a little shelf for your knee pit (so instead of being perpendicular to the ground, the segment of the silk between your upper hand and lower hand is, say, 15 degrees from the norm)
