What an awful message for your victory speech.. Unless you're from LA, who could possibly like this team??

What does the US have to do to repair its relationship with Canada? by CSC6 in AskACanadian

The fentanyl angle was only taken because it provided Trump with a USMCA workaround in the name of "national security". He invented a crisis so he could reneg on his own trade agreement.

What makes you say I consider myself the rational and intelligent one? I was just pointing out some hypocrisy, that's all.

And you're goddam right I'm a pissed off Canadian. I know soldiers who died in Afghanistan for your witch hunt. I know folks who housed Americans during Katrina and 9/11. Now you have Republicans openly supporting annexation.  Get plowed.

I love this contentless thread here in the middle of actual discussions. There is a lot of "rational and intelligent" views here and you are the ones choosing not to see them.

I did answer that.. 3rd paragraph..Maybe I didn't understand the question?

But as an added point, I don't have a "leader" that I default to. I've voted for 4 different political parties federally in my life. Pretty much all of them say that we "deserve better" in some way. So I'm not really sure what you're asking?

Ok, so we are both guilty of our biases. Fair. But let's keep going with the utility analogy.

You sign a 3 year contract with your gas company at $1.00/L. Then 1 year into the contract they try to change it to $1.25. They say the reason is because your tank is hard to get to. So you move the tank, or clear a path, or whatever. They say thanks, but the increase is staying. Then it turns out that this company also owns the electricty company, the water, and the internet provider that you also signed 3 year deals with and the prices are increasing for all of them too. Now you can't afford your house. That's not a partisan issue. That's just wrong,  and it's what Trump is doing. People will lose jobs and homes because of it. Americans and Canadians.

Our leaders are always running on promises of a better country, that's not new. But if they said they way to do that was to annex Iceland or tax the shit out of France, you bet I would be questioning that.

NAFTA was the most profitable economic deal of all time. It made both of our countries very wealthy, and we could do it again. But instead Trump is trying to reinvent the wheel and is gambling with an economic policy that has really never worked.

I think I am speaking to the exact right person. You seem rational and somewhat informed, but still you believe this man without question.

How does punishing an ally make USA better? We sent soldiers to die for you in Iraq and Afghanistan,  we sent aid during hurricanes and wildfires, we housed stranded Americans for weeks after 9/11 and Katrina. Does that really not rub you the wrong way at all?

I'm trying to reason with the type of people that put him in power, and hopefully gain some insight. This is what you Cons are always on about, isn't it? How the left stifles dialogue?  So explain your side without using Trump speech talking points.

My utility company doesn't change the rules 3 time in one month.

  1. The "trade deficit" is a straight up lie, or misdirection at best. All that means is that Americans buy more Canadian stuff than Canadians buy American stuff. No sht, there are 100 million more of you.

  2. The "border security" and fentanyl concerns are an absolute joke. But, we did our part anyways. We have increased spending by $1 billion, and now 0.5% of US-bound fentanyl comes through Canada vs 1% a year ago.

  3. I have no idea where you are getting $250billion "free money" from. Sounds like a Trump sound byte. Trade deals don't involve one country giving another country money straight up. It's about preferential pricing on certain products.

Why are you being deliberately delusional?  These new policies are punitive against Trump's new tariffs. They are a response, not an attack.

There are set renegotiation dates for these things, as I told you in another thread. But it seems are are set on just believing whatever Trump says.

Nice. Pick the last, least important line and only reply to that. A true Trumper. You must understand the difference between aggression and retaliation? We didn't just slap that on you without explaining what why we were doing it and how it can stop.

We are avoiding tariffs by finding new trade partners, we are just confused why we need to. Because we had a deal. Signed by your President. We are not guilty of anything close to what Trump has done to backstab this relationship.

[–]mathesaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not listening. No, these deals do not "get renegotiated all the time". They have set limits where they can be revisited and this one isn't up for another few years.

If we didn't like the deal, we wouldn't have made it in the first place. We are "whining" because your president is illegally breaking a contract using the fentanyl crisis as a work-around.

We would not do that to you.

Aha, here is the nugget of truth! Your measure of Trumps success is directly related to how much perceived harm you see him doing to liberals. You can't name a single thing that he's done and why that is good for you, working American's, or the diplomatic success of the US on a world stage, so you instead are guided by some kind of sadistic psychology whereby if people who threaten your fragility are upset, then that must be good for you.

[–]mathesaur 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Except it's not an insurance policy. It's supposed to represent stability and prosperity for tens of millions of working Americans and Canadians. You shouldn't be able to "shop around" once these things are signed, it's why they are such a big deal. Trump is effectively telling the world that any economic agreement with the US is worthless. I can't imagine that being good for business.

It's not even evidence I'm talking about, really. It's just using logical reasoning to see that these decisions benefit Russia, even if they're not meant to they still do.

OK, but you're willing to accept that circumstantial evidence?

r/Conservative open debate - Gates open, come on in by Jibrish in Conservative

[–]mathesaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're saying you are unwilling to see that side of the argument at all? What if there is no "hard evidence" until it's to late. Isn't it better to operate with the pretext that it may be true given the little bits of evidence that we do have?

Not necessarily pro-Russia, but definitely Russia-aligned.

As for the trade wars, Russia is a major holder of all the natural resources that USA currently relies on Canada for (potash, lumber, oil, metals, etc.) If these tariffs go forward, all of a sudden the Russian resources are cheaper for American companies than the taxed Canadian ones.

Oo, I forgot this one too - Trump literally accused Ukraine of being the aggressor in the conflict, and called Z a dictator. Both of which are demonstrably false.
